Bears complete interviews with Glenn Cook, Doug Pederson

The Bears conducted interviews with GM candidate Glenn Cook and HC candidate Doug Pederson on Wednesday.

The Chicago Bears are int he middle of their searches for a new general manager and head coach following the firings of Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy earlier this week.

Chairman George McCaskey, President/CEO Ted Phillips and Hall of Fame executive Bill Polian will be conducting the GM search for the Bears.

They have completed their first interviews of this process, interviewing Cleveland Browns assistant director of pro scouting Glenn Cook for their GM job and former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson on Wednesday.

Cook served as the Browns’ Assistant Director of Pro Scouting from 2016-19 before being promoted to VP of Player Personnel. Cook also spent time with the Green Bay Packers as a pro scout from 2012-15.

Pederson served as the Eagles’ head coach from 2016-20, where he led Philadelphia to a Super Bowl. He also worked under Andy Reid as offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs (2013-15) and quarterbacks coach with the Eagles (2011-12).

The Bears have cast a wide net of candidates for both GM and head coach. Here’s a look at the complete list of head coach and GM candidates Chicago has requested to interview or has interviewed:

Bears request to interview Browns’ Glenn Cook for GM vacancy

The Bears are looking to interview Browns VP of Player Personnel Glenn Cook, who has been a top talent evaluator for Cleveland.

The Chicago Bears have been busy Monday, firing both head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace and starting their searches for a new head coach and GM.

Chairman George McCaskey, President/CEO Ted Phillips and Hall of Fame executive Bill Polian will be conducting the GM search for the Bears, where they’ve already started lining up interviews.

According to ESPN’s Kimberley Martin, the Bears have requested an interview with Browns VP of Player Personnel Glenn Cook, who has been a top talent evaluator for Cleveland.

Cook served as the Browns’ Assistant Director of Pro Scouting from 2016-19 before being promoted to VP of Player Personnel. Cook also spent time with the Green Bay Packers as a pro scout from 2012-15.

Cook is the third GM candidate that the Bears have requested to interview, joining Indianapolis Colts director of college scouting Morocco Brown and Browns VP of Football Operations Kwesi Adofo-Mensah.

Bears request to interview two Browns execs for GM job

Two Browns front office execs are on the Bears, and likely others, radar. Both could lead to draft compensation for the Browns if hired as GM elsewhere:

The Cleveland Browns may not have made the playoffs but the work done by the front office has not been overlooked the last couple of years. The Chicago Bears have reportedly requested to interview two different members of the Browns front office for their vacant general manager position.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Glenn Cook are on the Bears list for hopeful interviews. Adofo-Mensah interviewed with the Carolina Panthers last year and could be a target of multiple clubs this offseason. He was mentioned as a possible sleeper candidate for GM jobs.

Adofo-Mensah held the director of football research and development position for the 49ers before Berry hired him in Cleveland. Just 10 years prior, he held titles like commodities trader and portfolio manager on Wall Street. His first job in football came when he was hired by the 49ers in 2013. He spoke about his work history when he was hired by Berry.

This will be the first known interview for a GM job for Cook, if Cleveland approves the Bears request.

Both executives would qualify the Browns for draft pick compensation if hired based on a rule adopted by the NFL last year. The basics of that rule were laid out as follows:

• A team that loses a minority assistant coach who becomes a head coach or loses a personnel executive who becomes a general manager will receive third-round compensatory picks in each of the next two drafts.

• A team that loses two minority staffers to head coach and general manager positions would receive three third-round picks.

Last year, the Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Rams were the first teams to receive the compensation and will receive another third-round pick this year as well.

Cleveland GM Andrew Berry has been lauded for his work since taking over the Browns in 2020. He may need to quickly restock his front office in the near future if either or both Adofo-Mensah and Cook are hired elsewhere.

Browns VP of Player Personnel Glenn Cook wants Myles Garrett in Cleveland ‘for as long as we can’

Browns VP of Player Personnel Glenn Cook wants Myles Garrett in Cleveland ‘for as long as we can’

If it was up to Browns Vice President of Player Personnel Glenn Cook, defensive end Myles Garrett would never leave Cleveland. It’s not Cook’s decision, of course, but it’s a nice indication from a person within the Browns front office that getting a contract extension done with Garrett is a hot priority.

Cook, who was promoted to the VPP job from the scouting department earlier this offseason, was careful to not overplay his hand while still strongly indicating that the team fully intends to keep Garrett as long as possible.

After noting the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and how it makes every future uncertain, Cook had this to say about extending Garrett during a Zoom teleconference with reporters this week,

“Myles is a really good player. Personally, I would love to have him for as long as we can. Those are decisions that Andrew, (GM Berry), (Vice President of Football Operations) Kwesi (Adofo-Mensah) and ownership have to make. I can’t give you an update. I think Andrew will be the better person to speak on that, but I can tell you, as you probably know, we are really excited to have him on our team and hopefully, have him for a long time.”

Browns promote Glenn Cook to VP of Player Personnel

Browns promote Glenn Cook to VP of Player Personnel, replacing Alonzo Highsmith

The Cleveland Browns promoted Glenn Cook up the personnel ladder within the team’s front office. Cook, who has been been the Assistant Director of Pro Scouting, will now assume the role of VP of Player Personnel.

The promotion effectively replaces Alonzo Highsmith, who was not retained by new GM Andrew Berry. Cook has been with the Browns since 2016. Like his predecessor, he joined the Browns after working with the Green Bay Packers and played college football at Miami.

He’s worked as a pro scout as well as an advance scout, focused more on the Browns’ opponents than the collegiate scouting realm.
