MVP Race: Jayson Tatum makes the Top 10 for the first time

Each week, HoopsHype’s staff gives our Top 10 candidates for this year’s Most Valuable Player award. Which stars have stood out thus far?

Each week, HoopsHype’s staff gives the Top 10 candidates for this year’s Most Valuable Player award. This list highlights stars who are in the mix for the 2019-20 MVP award due to their impressive play. Some of them are big men, others are ball-handlers and still, others are wings. Some come from the best teams in the league while others are doing enough to put themselves in this conversation merely by having their squats in a position to fight for a playoff spot.

Which stars have stood out? Here are our latest MVP rankings:

Russell Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

10. JAYSON TATUM, BOSTON

Last week’s ranking: Unranked.

An outrageous run of form recently was enough to get Jayson Tatum in these rankings for the first time this season, as the third-year forward has been out of his mind since the All-Star break. Over his last 12 games, nine of which were victories for the Boston Celtics, Tatum is averaging 30.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.3 blocks per contest on fiery 49.4/48.1/76.9 shooting splits. Sure, his three-point shooting might cool off a bit going forward, but the fact that the young Duke product is getting to the foul line over seven times per contest in that stretch indicates his new level of aggressiveness could help him sustain this high level of play to an extent. Tatum is already gaining fans from league legends around the Association…

…and if he can keep it up in the playoffs, we could one day look back at this stretch from Tatum as the period when he legitimately became a superstar.

Jim Rassol-USA TODAY Sports

9. JIMMY BUTLER, MIAMI

Last week’s ranking: No. 10.

After a run of poor form saw the Miami Heat drop games to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks and Minnesota Timberwolves over a four-game stretch, Jimmy Butler and Co. have turned things around recently, winning three in a row, including one outing against a Western Conference playoff team in the Dallas Mavericks and also one versus the best team in basketball, the Milwaukee Bucks. Miami is now the only team to beat Milwaukee twice this season, indicating that they could be a tough out come playoff time. The Heat are 6.2 points per 100 possessions better with Butler on the floor this season, and he’s without a doubt been the team’s most important player on the campaign, particularly when he’s aggressive on offense.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

8. KAWHI LEONARD, LA CLIPPERS

Last week’s ranking: No. 7.

After the Los Angeles Clippers went through a somewhat concerning three-game losing streak a couple of weeks ago, the team was able to get healthy and get right back to their winning ways. Los Angeles went 4-0 last week, including noteworthy blowout wins over potential playoff foes, the Memphis Grizzlies and Denver Nuggets, who the Clippers beat by a combined 56 points. Kawhi Leonard has been excellent over that stretch, averaging 24.5 points and 7.5 rebounds while shooting 50.0 percent from the floor and 90.3 percent from the foul stripe.

Steve Dykes-USA TODAY Sports

7. DAMIAN LILLARD, PORTLAND

Last week’s ranking: No. 5.

Due to a groin injury, Damian Lillard hasn’t played since Feb. 12, a loss that has been brutal for the Portland Trail Blazers to overcome, as the team is 1-4 in their last five games. Lillard is hoping for a Wednesday return, a date that can’t come soon enough for a Portland team missing its best player. Lillard ranks fifth this season in scoring (29.5) and sixth in assists (7.9).

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

6. NIKOLA JOKIC, DENVER

Last week’s ranking: No. 8.

Following a humbling defeat at the hands of the Clippers, Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets bounced back nicely over the weekend, downing an elite Raptors team 133-118 behind one of the big Serbian’s best games of the season. On the evening, Jokic went off for 23 points, 18 rebounds and 11 assists, becoming just the second player this season to produce a 23/18/11 stat line in 2019-20. And Jokic did it in one less minute. What’s more, with that triple-double effort, the Nuggets star became the third-youngest player ever to amass 40 career triple-doubles, trailing just two Hall-of-Famers:

Decent company there for Jokic.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

5. LUKA DONCIC, DALLAS

Last week’s ranking: No. 5.

Recently turned 21-year-old Luka Doncic continues to play at an elite level, even despite carrying an ankle injury that is probably still hindering him. In his five games since returning from the knock, Doncic has averaged 27.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 9.4 assists per contest while leading Dallas Mavericks to a 4-1 record over that stretch. Doncic’s Slovenian countryman, Goran Dragic, had high praise for the former Real Madrid player recently, telling the media:

Considering how great Doncic already is, it’s scary to consider what his eventual ceiling will be.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

4. ANTHONY DAVIS, LA LAKERS

Last week’s ranking: No. 4.

One of the leaders for this season’s Defensive Player of the Year award who also happens to be averaging 26.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game, Anthony Davis is one of the most dominant two-way players in basketball at the moment. His efficiency lately has seen a bit of a downturn, though, as the supremely talented big man is shooting just 40.8 percent from the floor over his last four games, so it was probably smart of the Los Angeles Lakers to rest him on Sunday to let him heal up and get back to his dominating ways.

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

3. LEBRON JAMES, LA LAKERS

Last week’s ranking: No. 2.

It’s almost as if LeBron James knows when the most eyes will be on him, and takes his play to an even higher level on those evenings. After all, the four-time league MVP’s last two performances against the New Orleans Pelicans and Zion Williamson have been nothing short of extraordinary, with James dropping 34 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists in a 122-114 win for Los Angeles on Sunday. According to Basketball Reference’s Game Score metric, it was merely James’ fourth-best game this season, which just goes to show how insanely productive the Lakers forward has been on the campaign. He’s been so excellent, in fact, that his play this past weekend led to Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry saying:

High praise for LeBron, though we must say, there are a couple of other pretty strong candidates out there.

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

2. JAMES HARDEN, HOUSTON

Last week’s ranking: No. 3.

Although it may be Russell Westbrook who is putting up the bigger numbers since the Houston Rockets went super small, James Harden has still been the team’s engine helping propel them to six straight wins prior to Monday night’s defeat against the New York Knicks, and the West’s No. 4 seed. In that stretch, Harden has averaged 32.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game while slashing 47.2/39.2/83.3 splits. Additionally, Harden remains the league’s No. 1 scorer by a wide margin, putting up 34.9 points nightly. Fans may complain about the aesthetics of his game, but he’s as dominant as ever offensively and remains a strong candidate for MVP.

John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports

1. GIANNIS ANTETOKOUNMPO, MILWAUKEE

Last week’s ranking: No. 1.

Perhaps it’s because his dominance is so ridiculous that it has gotten boring to talk about, but there’s no doubt Giannis Antetokounmpo remains the frontrunner for MVP for the second year running. On the campaign, Antetokounmpo is averaging 29.9 points, 13.8 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 55.4 percent from the floor. What’s more, in 2019-20, the Greek Freak ranks first in Box Plus/Minus, Win Shares per 48 minutes and Player Efficiency Rating, and no lower than second in overall Win Shares and Value Over Replacement Player. Oh, and he has the Bucks on pace to win roughly 70 games this season. So yeah, Alvin Gentry, that’s why LeBron James isn’t just being handed MVP this season.

MVP Race: Donovan Mitchell enters the picture

Each week, HoopsHype’s staff gives our Top 10 candidates for this year’s Most Valuable Player award. Which stars have stood out thus far?

Each week, HoopsHype’s staff gives the Top 10 candidates for this year’s Most Valuable Player award. This list highlights stars who are in the mix for the 2019-20 MVP award due to their impressive play.

Which stars have stood out? Here are our latest MVP rankings:

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

10. DONOVAN MITCHELL, UTAH

STATS: 24.2 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 4.4 APG, 1.1 SPG, 46.1 FG%

Over their last 15 games, the Utah Jazz have been the league’s best team in net rating, with a robust +10.5 mark and a 14-1 record to their name in that stretch. Prior to missing Utah’s last game and most of the contest prior to that due to illness, Donovan Mitchell was leading the way for the Jazz in their impressive turnaround, averaging 24.8 points and 6.0 assists over his last 13 full outings while shooting 51.7 percent from the floor. Mitchell’s assists are up over the past month because he’s taken over primary playmaking duties for Utah after offseason acquisition Mike Conley, who has been a disappointment so far in his first campaign with the Jazz, went out with injury. The new role has suited Mitchell well.

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

9. KAWHI LEONARD, LA CLIPPERS

STATS: 25.8 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 5.1 APG, 1.9 SPG, 45.4 FG%

Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard started the season off on a cold streak shooting from the outside, followed that up with a long stretch of accurate marksmanship and has now seen his accuracy from beyond the arc plummet again. Leonard has hit just nine of his last 38 attempts from three, good for a paltry 23.7-percent clip. It should come as no surprise, then, that the Clippers have struggled in those six outings Leonard has suited up in, going 3-3 in that stretch including a humiliating 26-point loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. On the season, L.A. has struggled to really get things going at an elite level because Leonard and his superstar running partner on the wing, Paul George, have only played together 18 times with both missing time due to injury and injury maintenance. In those 18 games, however, the Clippers boast a 14-4 record, indicating how nasty they are when they have their two All-NBA-caliber forwards available.

Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

8. DAMIAN LILLARD, PORTLAND

STATS: 26.7 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 7.6 APG, 3.4 3PTM, 44.1 FG%

As the Portland Trail Blazers’ season continues to go down the drain, Damian Lillard is doing his best to prevent things from truly bottoming out, ranking eighth league-wide in scoring, eighth in assists and fourth in total three-pointers. Portland, who sits at 16-24 on the year, is a bit lucky it’s a down year for the bottom of the West, though, so they’re only two games out of the eighth seed as we approach the All-Star break. Without Lillard’s superhuman efforts this season, the Blazers would be closer to fighting for the top pick in the 2020 draft than for a shot at the postseason.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

7. JIMMY BUTLER, MIAMI

STATS: 20.7 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 6.5 APG, 1.9 SPG, 44.7 FG%

The numbers (those that indicated that the team’s record was vastly outpacing their production on both ends) finally caught up to the Miami Heat last week, as Miami followed up an impressive road win against the Indiana Pacers with back-to-back defeats at the hands of the Brooklyn Nets and, even more disappointingly, the New York Knicks. It’s hard to fault Jimmy Butler for the two losses, however, as the four-time All-Star averaged 29.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists in those two games. It must be noted, though, that Butler’s shooting continues to be an issue on the year, as this stat would indicate:

With that said, it’s kind of insane that Butler still ranks among the Top-10 players in the league in multiple advanced metrics, including Value Over Replacement Player, Box Plus/Minus and Win Shares per 48 Minutes, despite his poor shooting.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

6. NIKOLA JOKIC, DENVER

STATS: 19.3 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 6.4 APG, 51.0 FG%

It was quite the productive week for Nikola Jokic, who has averaged 29.8 points, 10.3 rebounds and 5.8 assists on ridiculous 59.2/56.5/71.0 shooting splits over his last four games. Jokic’s massive jump in play over the past month and change has helped propel the Denver Nuggets to a 27-12 record, the league’s No. 9 net rating and the No. 2 seed in the West. As such, Jokic has seen his placement in our weekly MVP rankings increase every week for the past month.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

5. LUKA DONCIC, DALLAS

STATS: 29.1 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 9.0 APG, 1.1 SPG, 46.8 FG%

It was a rough week for Luka Doncic, shooting-wise, as the Slovenian star has made just three of his last 15 three-point attempts and shot under 40 percent from the floor in that stretch. With Doncic’s struggles, the Dallas Mavericks have likewise hit a rough patch over the past week, dropping two out of three games, though their last contest was a solid bounce-back win for Dallas against the Philadelphia 76ers. Like Doncic recently said after a humbling defeat against the Los Angeles Lakers, even despite his insane production early on in his career, he still has a lot of areas he can improve. That’s a scary thought considering as is, he’s already posting a near 29/10/9 stat line, but it’s true. That’s how insane his upside is.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

4. ANTHONY DAVIS, LA LAKERS

STATS: 27.1 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 3.2 APG, 1.5 SPG, 2.6 BPG, 50.4 FG%

Anthony Davis’ last few games don’t give us much to discuss, considering he’s missed time with a bruised tailbone, but for the season as a whole, the Lakers power forward has looked like one of the very best players in the league. Sure, he’s done that before, but this season, Davis has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he can do it on a contender, unlike his time with the New Orleans Pelicans. On the season, Davis’ is the league’s highest-scoring pure big man (the player coming up at the top of our list is still more of a wing than a big) while ranking second in blocks and fourth in paint points. Few players can match Davis’ two-way dominance this campaign.

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

3. LEBRON JAMES, LA LAKERS

STATS: 25.4 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 10.7 APG, 1.3 SPG, 48.8 FG%

The league leader in assists per game, LeBron James is winning the ongoing battle against Father Time, proving that age is nothing but a number by dominating even as he hit 35 years old. We’ll let Butler, who came up at No. 7 in this ranking as in an elite player in his own right, explain in his own words what makes James so good:

“So … the five toughest players I’ve ever guarded. Let’s get to it. LeBron James, Positionless, Los Angeles Lakers. I didn’t want to talk about LeBron here. I really didn’t. I wanted to give some other guys some shine. But you can’t have a 5 Toughest list and not have LeBron on it. He’s still the best all-around player in the league. He literally does everything well. He can shoot. Pass. Attack the rim. Defend. You need a bucket? LeBron’s got you. You need a rebound, a steal or a block? He’s got you. Whatever you need, whenever you need it. Bron’s got you. When you talk about a combination of speed and athleticism, plus a combo of strength and explosiveness, you gotta start with LeBron.”

Couldn’t have said it any better ourselves, Jimmy.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

2. JAMES HARDEN, HOUSTON

STATS: 37.7 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 7.5 APG, 1.8 SPG, 38 3PT%

For the first time in a long time, James Harden laid an egg last week, dropping 17 points on 17 field-goal attempts in a 21-point loss for the Houston Rockets against the Oklahoma City Thunder. It came at an inopportune time for The Beard, at least as far as these rankings go, because Harden came close to surpassing the top player on our list last week before falling further behind in this week’s edition. It should be noted: Harden bounced back quickly from that stinker, dropping 32 points on 17 field-goal tries two nights later in what was a 30-point win for Houston.

Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

1. GIANNIS ANTETOKOUNMPO, MILWAUKEE

STATS: 29.8 PPG, 12.8 RPG, 5.5 APG, 1.2 SPG, 1.1 BPG, 55 FG%

The Milwaukee Bucks don’t usually dominate headlines, unless it’s the media discussing whether or not Giannis Antetokounmpo could leave one day as a free agent, which is unfortunate, because, as it turns out, they’ve been by far the best team in the league this season while being led by the Greek Freak. Antetokounmpo isn’t just the league’s No. 2 player in scoring average or No. 6 player in rebounding average or an improved shooter making over 32 percent of his three-point looks, he’s also a leading candidate for Defensive Player in the Year, as the Bucks boast the league’s stingiest defense thanks to Antetokounmpo’s prowess on that end. Simply put: Antetokoumpo dominates in just about every facet of basketball on a nightly basis, and that should get talked about more often than his free agency, which is still a decent amount of time away.

NBA MVP Race: Kawhi Leonard re-emerges

Each week, HoopsHype’s staff gives our Top 10 candidates for this year’s Most Valuable Player award. Which stars have stood out thus far?

Each week, HoopsHype’s staff gives our Top 10 candidates for this year’s Most Valuable Player award. This list highlights stars who are in the mix for the 2019-20 MVP award due to their impressive play.

Which stars have stood out? Here are our latest MVP rankings:

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

10. KAWHI LEONARD, LA CLIPPERS

STATS: 25.8 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 5.1 APG, 1.8 SPG, 45.0 FG%

A 42-point, 11-rebound performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves was enough to vault Kawhi Leonard back into the Top 10 of our MVP rankings for the first time in a few weeks, and served as a reminder of how dominant the 2019 Finals MVP can be when he gets going. This season has been a bit of a slog for Leonard, as his career-low 49.4 effective field goal percentage would attest to, but the Los Angeles Clippers’ load management plan with him resembles that of the Toronto Raptors last year, and should help Leonard look fresh by the time the playoffs roll around. Of course, the Clippers hope their strategy pays off like Toronto’s did in 2018-19.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

9. KEMBA WALKER, BOSTON

STATS: 23.1 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 5.3 APG, 3.8 3PG, 40.7 3PT%

Kemba Walker has arguably been an upgrade over the departed Kyrie Irving for the Boston Celtics, and is well on his way to earning All-Star honors for the fourth year running thanks to his exquisite level of play this year. Walker is shooting a career-high 40.7 percent from three in 2019-20, and is posting career-best marks in multiple advanced metrics, including Box Plus/Minus and Win Shares Per 48 Minutes. Walker has helped push the Celtics to a 17-7 record and the East’s No. 4 seed through 24 games.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

8. JOEL EMBIID, PHILADELPHIA

STATS: 22.8 PPG, 12.3 RPG, 3.3 APG, 1.3 BPG, 46.1 FG%

Considering the standard the big man set over the past few seasons, Joel Embiid’s play this year has been a bit disappointing… and Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal were sure to let him know that during a segment on TNT last Tuesday. How did Embiid respond? By having his best game of the season on Thursday, against a very good Celtics team, no less, exploding for 38 points, 13 rebounds and six assists on 12-of-21 shooting. Head coach Brett Brown joked after the game that he was considering hiring Barkley and Shaq as motivational coaches. Maybe not the worst idea.

Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

7. PASCAL SIAKAM, TORONTO

STATS: 24.7 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.0 SPG, 45.4 FG%

After a hot start from the three-point line this season (39.3 percent from deep over his first 17 games), Pascal Siakam has gone cold over the past eight outings, shooting just 31.1 percent from the outside during that stretch. That cold spell has coincided with the Raptors’ worst stretch of the season, with Toronto going just 4-4 over their last eight, and that’s probably not a coincidence. The Raptors will need Siakam to find his outside stroke again if they want to get back to their elite early-season form.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

6. JIMMY BUTLER, MIAMI

STATS: 21.0 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 6.8 APG, 2.1 SPG, 42.9 FG%

The league leader in nightly steals, Jimmy Butler’s addition to the Miami Heat has transformed the team from a mediocre mess to the league’s No. 7 squad in net rating. Miami is probably still a piece or two away from being legitimate title contenders, but with Butler as the centerpiece, they’ve become one of the more entertaining, and tough to beat, teams around the Association this year. Butler averaged 23.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 6.7 assists over three games last week.

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

5. ANTHONY DAVIS, LA LAKERS

STATS: 27.4 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 3.3 APG, 2.6 BPG, 49.9 FG%

A frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year who also happens to be averaging over 27 points, Anthony Davis has been an absolute force on both ends of the floor this season. Davis is 18th in nightly steals this year and second in blocks while his 27.4-point-per-game average is good for seventh in the league. For a big man to be able to score down low with such ease, have a respectable jumper, draw a lot of fouls and make them at over an 85 percent rate is legitimately unfair. If the Los Angeles Lakers do win a title this year, Davis could be the difference-maker.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

4. LUKA DONCIC, DALLAS

STATS: 29.3 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 8.9 APG, 1.2 SPG, 48.1 FG%

Even with an injury-related two-minute performance on Saturday bringing down his averages, Luka Doncic still ranks third league-wide in nightly points, 18th in rebounds and third in assists, and he’s done it all as a 20-year-old. The timing of Doncic’s injury is particularly brutal because it seemed like the Slovenian prodigy was about to take off, as his final game prior to getting hurt was a 41/12/11 explosion against the Detroit Pistons. If we can take solace in anything, it’s that Doncic should only miss around two weeks of action with the ankle sprain, which is a relief considering how ugly the injury looked.

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

3. LEBRON JAMES, LA LAKERS

STATS: 26.1 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 10.7 APG, 1.3 SPG, 50.2 FG%

They say Father Time is undefeated, but LeBron James is doing his best to prove that old saying wrong. Turning 35 years old in a few weeks, James is leading the league in assists while pouring in over 26 points nightly and snatching over seven boards per contest, and making over half of his field-goal attempts. LeBron’s level of play is so ridiculous, it truly makes you wonder how he does it, when he’s one of just three players left from his draft class, and the other two, Carmelo Anthony and Kyle Korver, are clearly on the tail end of their respective careers.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

2. JAMES HARDEN, HOUSTON

STATS: 39.3 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 7.5 APG, 2.0 SPG, 36.1 3PT%

You know James Harden is on another level with his scoring when he can drop 55 points one night, follow that up with 54 points in his next outing, and the NBA world sort of just keeps spinning without talking about it as much as it deserved to be discussed. In total, Harden averaged 43.8 points over four games last week, to go with 8.0 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.5 blocks while shooting 52.1 percent from the floor and 48.2 percent from three. Oh, and he did that while shooting fewer than seven free throws nightly, so, in this case, people can’t complain about the aesthetics of his performances. After a slow start to the year with his three-point shooting, Harden is making over 39 percent of his triples over the last month, an impressive mark considering the difficulty of his usual shot attempt.

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

1. GIANNIS ANTETOKOUNMPO, MILWAUKEE

STATS: 31.0 PPG, 12.8 RPG, 5.3 APG, 1.3 SPG, 56.3 FG%

Like Happy Gilmore learning how to putt, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s improved three-point stroke this season has somehow made the Greek superstar even more effective, which is scary considering he’s coming off an MVP campaign as is. Antekounmpo has 43 made triples this year. That’s as many as sharpshooting teammate Khris Middleton, and more than noted shooters like Jamal Murray and Seth Curry. Because of his improved shooting, according to Box Plus/Minus and Win Shares Per 48 Minutes, Antetokounmpo has been even better this season than he was last. If he’s able to keep this up, there’s little doubt the 25-year-old will be a frontrunner to take home his second consecutive MVP award at year’s end.
