Timothy Tillman reportedly files FIFA switch to USMNT from Germany

Two Tillmans are better than one for the USMNT

The U.S. men’s national team’s midfield talent pool just got deeper.

According to a report from The Athletic, Timothy Tillman has filed for a one-time switch of allegiance from Germany to the USMNT. Once cleared, the Los Angeles FC midfielder would potentially join his brother, Rangers playmaker Malik Tillman, in pursuing minutes in a crowded U.S. midfield.

Tillman was born and raised in Germany, and has represented the country at the youth level up to the under-19 level. The 24-year-old never quite broke through at Bayern Munich after emerging from their academy system, but became a regular with Greuther Fürth — where he played his youth soccer — from 2020 through the first half of the 2022-23 season.

He’s since taken things to a new level after moving to MLS with LAFC, stepping into a starting role as a No. 8 opposite USMNT regular Kellyn Acosta.

It’s been a long road for Tillman to put in for a USMNT switch. Appearances in 2017 for Germany’s under-19 team in European U-19 Championship qualifying left him obliged to file for a switch to represent the United States. Former U.S. under-20 head coach Tab Ramos said Tillman was going to make that switch all the way back in 2018, but the move didn’t materialize at the time.

In some circles, U.S. Soccer’s recruitment of the elder Tillman was speculated to be part of a process to get Malik Tillman to commit, but in the end, the younger brother chose the USMNT first. Timothy Tillman’s switch has not yet been formally announced by the USMNT, and it’s unclear how long that process might take on FIFA’s end.

How does Tillman fit with the USMNT?

On one hand, even though Tillman is an energetic, technical No. 8 playing at a high level with the best team in MLS, there’s no guarantee that the USMNT actually has a place for him at what is arguably its deepest position.

Along with his club teammate Acosta, interim coach Anthony Hudson can call on Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah, Brenden Aaronson, Luca de la Torre, and Cristian Roldan from the World Cup roster.

Beyond that group, Johnny Cardoso and Djordje Mihailovic are pushing to climb the depth chart, as are recent call-ups Paxton Pomykal and Alan Soñora.

That said, Tillman’s performances in MLS and the trajectory he’s on should put him firmly in the mix, provided the switch goes off without any obstacles.

It also feels like another success for U.S. Soccer’s approach to recruiting dual nationals. Over the last year, goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina (Poland) and winger Alex Zendejas (Mexico) both chose the USMNT over other options, while the team appears to be very much in the mix for red-hot Reims striker Folarin Balogun, who could also represent England or Nigeria. The battle for Tillman may not have been as fierce — there are currently no signs that Germany was about to call Tillman up — but the tides on the dual national front have been in the USMNT’s favor for some time now.

WATCH: Clark Hunt reacts to Chiefs-Dolphins announcement on ‘Good Morning Football’

#Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt joined NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” to react to playing #Dolphins in Frankfurt during the 2023 NFL season.

Guten Morgen, Chiefs Kingdom.

In case you missed it, the Kansas City Chiefs are set to play the Miami Dolphins at Frankfurt Stadium in Frankfurt, Germany this November. It was one of five international series games announced on Wednesday morning.

Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt joined NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” to discuss and react to the announcement of the team’s matchup with Miami in Germany. He first was asked about the stardom of Patrick Mahomes on the international stage.

“Yeah, I think it’s going to be incredible because he’s really become an international star,” Hunt said. “And that doesn’t frequently happen with NFL players. We’ve seen it with other sports. Our family being involved with the Chicago Bulls and the NBA, we saw it with Michael Jordan. And Patrick (Mahomes) has really become a global star, so it’ll be really interesting to see the reception he gets when we go to Germany.”

Hunt reflected on the team’s 2015 international series game in Wembley Stadium against the Detroit Lions. It was their first trip overseas for an NFL regular season game. What caught his attention most about that game was the turnout from Chiefs Kingdom.

“The thing that struck me in Wembley was the reception that we received,” Hunt said. “It was our home game and the stadium was really painted red. In a lot of ways, it felt like a home game. It sort of felt a little bit like we were at Arrowhead. So, I’ll be interested to see if we can recreate that in Frankfurt.”

Frankfurt Stadium holds just 51,500 fans, but the Chiefs will be looking to pack the place with red come game day. They’re one of just four NFL teams with international marketing rights in Germany, so they should theoretically be able to accomplish that feat.

Hunt clearly takes great pride in the opportunity, as he took great pride in being able to host the 2023 NFL draft in Kansas City this past April.

“Well, that was a special moment for me and the organization,” Hunt said. “Obviously, getting to host the draft in Kansas City, something that we’ve looked forward to for four or five years. And of course, the way it played out as the defending Super Bowl champions, it was really a way for us to elongate the celebration. We were on the same stage to finish the parade three months before. So, being back there and being able to announce Felix’s name — I’m not going to try to do it again, I got it right once. From now on I’m going to refer to him as Felix.”

Chiefs to play Dolphins in Germany in Week 9

Tyreek Hill’s homecoming will have to wait because the #Chiefs are playing the #Dolphins in Germany in Week 9.

After months of speculation, we finally know who the Kansas City Chiefs will be playing in Germany.

And no — it isn’t the Chicago Bears.

The Miami Dolphins are joining the Chiefs in Frankfurty, Germany on Thursday, November 5 to face the Chiefs in Week 9 of the 2023 NFL season. Check it out:

“We are thrilled to be headed to Frankfurt this fall to play the Dolphins,” Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said, via press release. “The Chiefs have a long history of helping to grow the game of football around the world, and we have been eagerly anticipating our chance to play in Germany. Ever since the Chiefs were awarded International Home Marketing Rights for Germany, we have engaged with fans and partners throughout the DACH region, and we can feel the enthusiasm for NFL football. We look forward to bringing Chiefs Kingdom to Germany and to sharing the game with our fans in Europe.”

This is, admittedly, a strange choice for Kansas City. It comes after the news that the team protected their home game against Chicago from going overseas.

It puts a damper on one of the most intriguing storylines of the offseason — Tyreek Hill’s return to Arrowhead Stadium following his trade. Instead, he’ll get to face his former team overseas.

If  you’re interested in tickets for international games, here’s the scoop on that:

So when will the Saints play their next international game?

The Saints are not going to Germany in 2023, as had previously been reported abroad. So when will they play their next international game?

News from the NFL that the New Orleans Saints will not be traveling for a game in Germany was something positive for many fans to wake up to stateside, but it’s a tough break for fans in Europe who were hoping to see their team in person. The New England Patriots are going to “host” a different opponent than the one which had been reported in local outlets.

So when will the Saints be playing overseas again?

It could be as soon as 2024, but the good news for New Orleans (especially season-ticket holders) is that the Saints will not be losing a home game for an international matchup until 2030. When the NFL rolled out its 17-game schedule in 2021, it determined that every team would take the role as the “home” team for one international game every eight years.

Since the Saints were hosts in 2022 (traveling to London to face the Minnesota Vikings), they won’t lose another home game at the Caesars Superdome until 2030.

This means the Saints could play a game abroad in 2024, 2025, 2026, and so on. We’ll have to wait and see. Where an international game could be played is just as unclear; the league has scheduled games in London, Munich, Frankfurt, and Mexico City as it continues to make inroads to other markets around the world.

Regardless of that future scheduling, this is good for the Saints in the short term. Because they won’t be taking the role as the home team and losing a lucrative game in New Orleans, they’ll finally enjoy the benefits of a 17-game schedule with nine home games in 2024:

  • 2021: 7 of 8 home games in New Orleans (relocated to Jacksonville due to Hurricane Ida for Week 1 vs. Green Bay Packers)
  • 2022: 8 of 9 home games in New Orleans (assigned to London for international game in Week 4 vs. Minnesota Vikings)
  • 2023: 8 of 8 home games in New Orleans (No changes expected)
  • 2024: 9 of 9 home games in New Orleans (No changes expected)

The Saints won’t be going to Germany after all

Despite local reporting in Germany, the NFL announced a different opponent for the Patriots. The Saints won’t be going to Frankfurt after all:

New Orleans Saints fans in Germany will have to wait a while longer to see their team in person. Despite local reporting overseas claiming the Saints would be visiting for a game with the New England Patriots, the NFL on Wednesday announced that the Indianapolis Colts, not the Saints, will be playing the role of the away team in this matchup with the Patriots.

That’s a bummer for fans abroad who were hoping to make the trip. But it has to be a relief to the Saints who just played an international game last year against the Minnesota Vikings in London. We’ll find out the full schedule for New Orleans in the days ahead.

Here are this year’s NFL International Series matchups:

  • Week 4: Falcons at Jaguars on Oct. 1 (Wembley Stadium, London)
  • Week 5: Jaguars at Bills on Oct. 8 (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London)
  • Week 6: Ravens at Titans on Oct. 15 (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London)
  • Week 9: Dolphins at Chiefs on Nov. 5 (Frankfurt Stadium, Germany)
  • Week 10: Colts at Patriots on Nov. 12 (Frankfurt Stadium, Germany)

Predicting the Saints’ primetime matchups in 2023

Predicting the New Orleans Saints’ primetime matchups in 2023: How many national broadcasts will the team receive?

The NFL’s 2023 schedule is set to be released in a sprawling two-day rollout, and one of the big questions New Orleans Saints are searching to answer lies in the number of primetime games their team will get. After a couple of down years, how often will the Saints get to shine in front of a national audience?

Not including last year’s early-morning showing in London, the Saints were featured on three night games (twice on Monday nights, one Thursday night) and one late-afternoon spot. All of their other matchups were held in the usual 1 p.m. ET/noon CT time slot. A year earlier, the Saints were shown in five primetime games and twice in the late afternoon.

So what can Saints fans expect coming off their team’s 9-8 and 7-10 finishes? Here’s our best guess before the schedule is announced:

Latest news on NFL schedule release, Chiefs’ game in Germany

The NFL’s schedule reveal might be delayed and the #Chiefs’ opponent in Germany might not be the one that was previously reported.

We might need to wait a bit longer before we know the Kansas City Chiefs’ 2023 NFL schedule.

The NFL had originally planned their big schedule reveal for Thursday, May 11. According to NBC Sports’ Peter King in his latest Football Morning in America column, the league might not be finished with the schedule in time for that to happen. Some of the biggest games on the schedule seem to still be up in the air per King.

Check it out:

The release of the schedule, which the NFL had hoped to have for a primetime show Thursday night, may be delayed. It’s still likely to be done in time for release Thursday at 8 p.m., but I was told over the weekend it may not be finished in time. The 2023 mega-games—opening Thursday, Sunday and Monday nights, Thanksgiving Day, the new Black Friday tilt, the Sunday night game on Christmas Eve and the Monday tripleheader on Christmas—are not set in stone yet. The mega-games are usually solid by early May. The schedule crew is slated to meet with commissioner Roger Goodell this afternoon in New York, at which time more clarity on the tentpole games is expected. I’m told as of the weekend the NFL was still in search of options on the 272-game regular season slate, with a series of computers continuing to spit out alternatives.

We do already know the upcoming opponents for Kansas City and whether they’ll be home or away games. Now, it’s just a matter of the NFL settling when those games will be played.

King’s report also provided new information on one particular game in 2023 — the Chiefs’ matchup in Germany. It appears that game might not be against the Chicago Bears after all. It was previously reported by both ESPN and the German Newspaper Bild that the team’s game would be against the Bears.

King says that Kansas City is playing a November game in Frankfurt, Germany this year, but that it won’t be against Chicago. He also says that the report of a 2024 game in Munich against the Panthers hasn’t yet been decided.

Kansas City is playing a November game in Frankfurt this year; that’s a fact. The German newspaper Bild reported KC would play Chicago in the Germany game, and that KC would play again in Germany in 2024 when Carolina is due to host a game there. Bild reported Carolina’s 2024 foe would be Kansas City. I’ve been told there’s some doubt on both of those reports. First: When a team gives up one of its home games to play overseas, it has the option of requesting to the league one home game on its schedule the team does not want moved. I’m told Kansas City requested that the Chicago game not be played overseas. As for 2024, it’s hard to imagine Carolina would not try to keep Patrick Mahomes’ only currently scheduled game in Charlotte for the next eight years at Bank of America Stadium. You might ask, Wouldn’t Kansas City want to protect red-hot home games against Buffalo, Cincinnati and Philadelphia from moving to Germany? The league would almost certainly not schedule those games for overseas, because Germany games are played in the 9:30 a.m. ET window, which is not nearly as conducive to big ratings as are Sunday late-afternoon or primetime games.

We should get clarity on this situation as soon as the NFL finalizes its schedule and gets it to the public.

NFL schedules release date for its 2023 schedule release

It’s finally almost here. The NFL has scheduled a release date for its 2023 regular season schedule release: We’ll soon know when and where every Saints game will kick off:

Grab your calendar — ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the NFL plans to announce its full 2023 schedule of regular season games for every team, including the New Orleans Saints, on Thursday, May 11. So they’ve effectively scheduled a release date for the NFL schedule release. We’ve got to wait another week to learn when these games will be played in September, October, November, December, and January (and, hopefully, February’s Super Bowl LVIII).

We already know the list of opponents the Saints will kick off against. They’ll host the division-rival Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers at the Caesars Superdome along with other NFC teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, and New York Giants as well as rare AFC matchups with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans.

And the Saints will hit the road to visit the Falcons, Panthers, and Buccaneers in addition to the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans (AFC), Indianapolis Colts (AFC), and New England Patriots (AFC). Reporting from Germany says the Saints and Patriots will play an international series game in Frankfurt but we’ll know for sure once the NFL announces its schedule of games.

So make plans to check in next week for our full coverage of the Saints schedule release and confirmation on all of these matchups. The NFL news cycle never seems to slow down.

Report: Panthers to host 2024 ‘home game’ vs. Chiefs in Germany

According to Bild, the Panthers are expected to host the Chiefs for a 2024 “home game” in Germany.

Hopefully, Carolina Panthers punter Johnny Hekker enjoyed himself over in Frankfurt last week when he announced his team’s fourth-round selection of the 2023 NFL draft—because he’s probably going back there next year.

As reported by Max Schrader of German newspaper Bild, and later confirmed by Joe Person of The Athletic on Thursday afternoon, the Panthers will be playing the Kansas City Chiefs in Germany during the 2024 season. The matchup between the two franchises, both of which carry international marketing rights in the country, will be considered a home game for Carolina.

Schrader also reported that the Chiefs will have a date in Germany with the Chicago Bears this upcoming season. The New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots, additionally, should be solidified as the other 2023 clash taking place on German soil.

An official announcement on the Panthers’ historic trip, according to Person, is expected to be made some time next week.

Bucs expand international home marketing area into Austria and Switzerland

The Bucs are breaking into more international markets.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ international market is growing bigger.

The Bucs began a marketing relationship with Germany in 2022 as part of the NFL’s International Home Marketing Areas program, but the team announced on Tuesday that the team is expanding into Austria and Switzerland through the program.

According to the team, the program “grants NFL clubs access to international markets for marketing, fan engagement and commercialization activations as part of an important, long-term, strategic effort to enable clubs to build their brands globally while driving NFL fan growth beyond the US.” As a part of the initiative with Germany, the Bucs played a game in soccer club Bayern Munich’s stadium against the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. It’s currently unknown if the Buccaneers plan to play in Austria or Switzerland.

The Kansas City Chiefs also began a marketing relationship with Germany through the program and have expanded into Switzerland and Austria as well.
