Jacobian Guillory opens up about Jamar Cain’s exit

Guillory offered high praise for Cain on his way out to join the Broncos staff.

[autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag] took a job on Sean Peyton’s staff with the Denver Broncos, leaving LSU looking for a defensive line coach.

Cain only spent a year at LSU, but he did a lot of good work in that time, both developing and recruiting. It’s a big loss, and [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] will have to make a good hire to find an adequate replacement.

One of the toughest aspects of this sport is seeing how coaching departures affect the players. [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag] talked about Cain’s exit, offering a bittersweet tone.

“I have nothing but love for coach Cain,” Guillory said. “To see him go, it does hurt. I cried after practice.”

Guillory went on to speak about how this was Cain’s goal — getting an NFL job. Guillory said he’s happy to see Cain getting this opportunity and wishes him the best.

Guillory praised the work Cain did with himself and fellow defensive tackle [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag].

Guillory originally committed to [autotag]Ed Orgeron[/autotag] at LSU. When he took his official visit in June of 2019, [autotag]Dennis Johnson[/autotag] was the defensive line coach. Including Johnson, Guillory has seen LSU go through four defensive line coaches in that span and will soon see a fifth.

Guillory is part of a defensive tackle group that could be one of the nation’s best in 2023. Whoever takes over that room, whether it’s [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag] or an out-of-house option, plenty of talent will be waiting.

11 potential candidates to be LSU’s next defensive line coach

Who could the Tigers turn to in order to replace Jamar Cain?

With defensive line coach [autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag] taking a job with the Denver Broncos, [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] has an opening on his staff.

It’s the middle of spring practice, and LSU has the support staff to work in the interim. So, a new hire might not be imminent.

We’re taking a look at who Kelly could turn to when the new hire is made. Predicting coaching searches can be tough due to all that goes into it — especially with a position coach.

Head coaches value different traits from each member of their staff. In Cain, LSU lost a guy who could recruit Louisiana and nationally. One would think Kelly will look for someone with similar recruiting prowess.

So let’s jump right in.

Report: Former Ed Orgeron assistant returning to LSU as a defensive analyst

Gerald Chatman — an analyst at LSU last fall — spent the 2022 season at Colorado, where he was promoted to interim defensive coordinator midway through the season.

LSU is bringing back [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag] as a defensive analyst, On3’s Matt Zenitz reported on Sunday. Chatman returns to Baton Rouge after spending the 2021 season on coach Ed Orgeron’s staff as an analyst working with the defensive line.

Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] planned to retain Chatman in that role when he took the job last offseason, but Chatman left for an on-field role as the defensive line coach at Tulane in January. After just two months on the job, he left for the same role at Colorado in March.

When the Buffaloes fired coach Karl Dorrell, Chatman was promoted to interim defensive coordinator.

A well-traveled assistant over the last decade, Chatman came to LSU from the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals, where he was an assistant working with the defensive line and outside linebackers.

Some Buffs want Colorado to keep coaching staff intact

Some Buffs players would like to see the current coaching staff remain intact

One voice that seems to be overlooked during a head coaching search is that of the players — at least from an outside perspective. While student-athletes only have a few years of eligibility, they are the ones most impacted by the decision made.

At the University of Colorado, athletic director Rick George and his search committee are currently looking for the Buffs’ next head football coach, somebody who will likely bring in fresh assistants.

But if you ask a handful of CU players, they’d like to see current members of the staff retained in hopes of having more time to learn their concepts. Freshman linebacker Devin Grant shared this sentiment on Twitter and he was retweeted by Simeon Harris, Casey Roddick, Ben Finneseth, Tommy Brown and Trent Carrizosa. Jeremy Mack, Trey Ortega and Charlie Offerdahl also liked the tweet.

It’s unlikely that Grant’s wish will come true, but interim head coach Mike Sanford and his coordinators Clay Patterson and Gerald Chatman have performed mostly well in the aftermath of Karl Dorrell leaving.

Interim defensive coordinator Gerald Chatman has Mike Sanford fired up

Mike Sanford is excited about Gerald Chatman’s newfound opportunity

It was been a whirlwind of a Sunday for Colorado football. Head coach Karl Dorrell and defensive coordinator Chris Wilson were dismissed and offensive coordinator Mike Sanford was elevated to the role of interim head coach. Corresponding moves were also made at the OC and DC positions.

It was also announced on Sunday that tight ends coach Clay Patterson will be moving into Sanford’s vacated role at OC and defensive line coach Gerald Chatman has gotten the nod at DC.

Sanford was asked about what Chatman brings to the table on Sunday during a press conference:

“Based off of where we are at at this point, (Chatman brings) energy, life, accountability (and is) someone who is built to inspire,” Sanford Said. “When I sat in on his unit meeting with the defense, I was fired up. I was ready to go play sound, fast, simple defense for Gerald Chatman”

Upon firing of Karl Dorrell and Chris Wilson, CU Buffs announce interim coaches

Mike Sanford has been named Colorado’s interim head coach

With Karl Dorrell being fired on Sunday afternoon following an 0-5 start to his third season as head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, offensive coordinator Mike Sanford has been named the interim head coach.

Sanford was previously the head coach at Western Kentucky from 2017-18 and prior to this season, he held OC duties at Minnesota from 2019-21. Colorado passing game coordinator and tight ends coach Clay Patterson, another recent Minnesota coach, is now the Buffs’ interim OC.

CU athletic director Rick George also announced that defensive coordinator Chris Wilson has been let go. Defensive line coach Gerald Chatman is now the interim DC.

Gerald Chatman taking Colorado’s pass rush to ‘new level’

With Gerald Chatman now leading the D-line, Colorado’s pass rush is looking much better

As Colorado’s first preseason scrimmage progressed, the Buffs’ pass rush seemed to grow stronger.

Alvin Williams, Shakuan Bowser and Quinn Perry each had a quarterback hurry, plus Na’im Rodman and Chance Main combined for a sack, according to my (very) unofficial record keeping.

All of that success is no fluke.

Rodman spoke to the media following the scrimmage and said that CU’s ability to apply pressure has taken a step forward with Gerald Chatman now coaching the D-line.

“He’s a great coach,” Rodman said. “He’s part of the reason why our pass rush has gone to a new level and our run game technique, all that.”

And as a reminder, Colorado tallied a Pac-12-low 13 sacks last season, making the pass rush a critical area to improve upon in 2022. But through 10 preseason practices, things are looking better.

Gerald Chatman named a ‘rising-star assistant’ by On3

On3 is a big fan of Colorado’s new D-line coach Gerald Chatman

The Colorado Buffaloes coaching staff is getting some love in the offseason.

The additions of Phil McGeoghan and Mike Sanford on the offensive end are terrific steps in the right direction.

However, one defensive assistant who got a shoutout is defensive line coach Gerald Chatman.

Matt Zenitz of On3 wrote a piece on rising assistant coaches and gave a warm mention to Chatman.

Here’s some of what Zenitz said about Chatman:

Before LSU, Chatman worked with the linebacker and defensive line groups with the Bengals, including assisting with eight-time Pro Bowl selection Geno Atkins, two-time Pro Bowler Carlos Dunlap and productive younger players such as Sam Hubbard and Carl Lawson. Aided by Chatman, Hubbard – a 2018 third-round pick – broke out as a second-year player in 2019 and had 76 tackles and 8.5 sacks.

Chatman has enjoyed his share of success, and his NFL presence is something that Karl Dorrell is going to love (McGeoghan also has NFL ties).

Of course, Chatman’s path to Boulder was different than most. Chatman was headed to Tulane after Brian Kelly took the job at LSU and replaced a lot of the staff. But, Colorado came calling, and now Chatman is on Dorrell’s staff with the Buffs in the Pac-12 Conference.

It is nice to see Chatman get acknowledged as a rising assistant, and at the very least, the Buffs have a few assistants that might take other jobs sooner than later.

REPORT: CU Buffs to hire Gerald Chatman as new D-line coach

Per a report, Colorado was quick to find a new D-line coach

The Colorado Buffaloes coaching staff is now complete, again. After a wild offseason with players leaving left and right via the transfer portal, the football program is starting to settle down.

However, after Vic So’oto left for a job at Cal earlier this week, the Buffs had to quickly begin searching for a new D-line coach.

Karl Dorrell can’t seem to catch any breaks this offseason but just after So’oto left, the Buffs went to work and locked down Gerald Chatman as their new D-line coach, according to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic.

Chatman makes his way over from Tulane, although he was retained at LSU after Brian Kelly made the move from South Bend to Baton Rouge.

Nothing is official yet, but Feldman’s report suggests that Chatman is leaving Tulane and heading to Boulder in what should presumably be a bigger deal.

Chatman, like So’oto, has NFL ties after having spent a couple of years with the Cincinnati Bengals. Assuming the report from Feldman comes to fruition, Chatman would be a big hire,

The Buffs in 2022 will look vastly different from the team that just played no more than four months ago, but that’s the way things go in today’s age of college football.
