Florida football sees two position changes ahead of 2024 season

Florida’s JUCO transfer will move up to the defensive line while a redshirt junior is moving back to an old position.

The start of the 2024 college football season is right around the corner and the Florida Gators are putting the final touches on its roster ahead of the grueling gridiron grind ahead.

During the offseason, [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and his army of coaches spent quite a bit of quality time with their players, working on maximizing the potential of every player on the team. As a result, a pair of those who were evaluated have migrated to different positions for the upcoming campaign, according to a report by Gators Online.

JUCO signee [autotag]Brien Taylor Jr[/autotag]., who arrived in Gainesville as a part of the 2024 class, played in the F spot during spring practice at the edge defender position with coach [autotag]Mike Peterson[/autotag] but has settled in with coach [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag] on the defensive line.

The other making a move is redshirt junior [autotag]Kamryn Waites[/autotag], who has moved back to the position he played previously at right guard. He moved to offensive tackle last year, starting the final two games of the 2023 season at right tackle; co-offensive coordinator [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] moved him over to the left side this spring citing some mild weight loss.

However, Waites is now expected to compete with redshirt junior Damieon George for the starting job at right tackle in 2024.

Florida announces hiring of DL coach Gerald Chatman

After a few weeks of searching, the Florida Gators have landed on Tulane’s Gerald Chatman as the new defensive line coach

Former Tulane defensive line coach [autotag]Greg Chatman[/autotag] is headed to Gainesville to serve in the same role under Billy Napier and Austin Armstrong at the University of Florida.

Chatman led the Green Wave’s defensive line to an elite 2023 season. Tulane finished the year ranked eighth in the country in rush defense (93.5 yards per game), fourth in turnovers gained (25) and tied for 22nd in sacks (34).

“My family and I are excited to join the University of Florida,” Chatman said in a press release. “I look forward to relentlessly working with coach Napier, the staff, and players to uphold the standard of the historic Gators football program. I embrace the challenge.”

Florida’s front seven looked strong through the first five games of the 2023 campaign, but the wheels started to fall off as injuries mounted and the season continued.

That’s why Sean Spencer was fired and Chatman was hired. The Gators can’t afford another poor defensive year, and Chatman has done wonders recently with less talent.

Report: LSU losing offensive analyst to Tulane

Carter Sheridan is returning to the Green Wave to take an on-field role.

LSU is seeing another shakeup to its support staff, according to a report from On3’s Matt Zenitz.

Offensive analyst [autotag]Carter Sheridan[/autotag] is leaving to become the running backs coach at Tulane. Sheridan will become the second LSU analyst to leave for an on-field position with the Green Wave, joining defensive analyst [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag].

Chatman served as LSU’s interim defensive line coach in the spring before leaving to take a full-time defensive line coaching gig in New Orleans.

A native of New Orleans, Sheridan was hired in 2020 and stayed on after the coaching change. This will be his second stint with the Green Wave; he served as the team’s receivers coach after spending 12 years as an assistant within the New Orleans Saints organization.

LSU reportedly expected to hire Kennesaw State defensive ends coach as analyst

Kynjee Cotton will likely replace the role Gerald Chatman held last season.

The Tigers are dipping into the Football Championship Subdivision ranks to replace the role previously occupied by [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag].

According to On3’s Matt Zenitz, LSU is hiring Kennesaw State defensive ends coach [autotag]Kynjee Cotton[/autotag] as an analyst. Cotton spent the 2022 season with the Owls after previous defensive ends coach stints at Samford and West Georgia.

Cotton has also served as a quality control coach at North Carolina, a defensive line coach at Birmingham Southern and a graduate assistant at UAB following a stint as a strength and conditioning intern at Alabama.

He’s a former standout defensive lineman at Alabama State, earning all-conference honors while in college.

Chatman previously served as an analyst working with the defensive line before being serving as the interim defensive line coach this spring when [autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag] left for the NFL. Chatman was later hired as the defensive line coach at Tulane.

Former LSU assistant added to Tulane staff

Greg McMahon is making his return to New Orleans.

A former LSU assistant will be joining another Louisiana FBS program.

Tulane is hiring [autotag]Greg McMahon[/autotag] for the role of special teams coordinator. McMahon held the same position at LSU from 2018-21 after joining the program in 2017 as a consultant.

After a string of rough special teams units in Baton Rouge, McMahon turned it around and was a member of the national championship staff in 2019.

This won’t be McMahon’s first stop in New Orleans. He spent 2006-16 with the New Orleans Saints, coaching special teams there, too.

McMahon is the second former LSU assistant Tulane hired this week. Ex-LSU analyst [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag] recently got the Green Wave’s defensive line job.

McMahon spent the last few years coaching in Houston with the USFL and XFL. Now 63, he gets to do a familiar job at a familiar place.

Tulane will look to build on the success it had last year when it won the AAC and the Cotton Bowl.

Report: LSU analyst Gerald Chatman leaving for in-state program

Chatman, the Tigers’ interim defensive line coach this spring, will be taking the DL coach position at Tulane after a brief return to Baton Rouge.

LSU defensive analyst [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag] is reportedly heading to Tulane to become the school’s next defensive line coach, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz.

Chatman was in his second stint at LSU after holding the same role in 2021. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] tried to retain him when he was hired, but he instead took an on-field position at Tulane briefly before becoming Colorado’s defensive line coach a few months later.

He was elevated to interim defensive coordinator after the firing of coach Karl Dorrell.

Chatman also served as LSU’s interim defensive line coach this spring, replacing [autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag], who left to take a role with the Denver Broncos. The Tigers recently hired a full-time defensive line coach, [autotag]Jimmy Lindsey[/autotag] from South Carolina.

Now, Chatman will end up as the defensive line coach after all following a brief four-month return to Baton Rouge.

What to know about new LSU DL coach Jimmy Lindsey

LSU’s on-field staff is complete following the addition of Lindsey, who comes in after spending two years at South Carolina.

LSU and [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] have found their new defensive line coach.

[autotag]Jimmy Lindsey[/autotag] will head to Baton Rouge after spending two years with South Carolina. Lindsey replaces [autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag], who took a job with the Denver Broncos as a pass rush specialist.

In Cain’s absence, analyst [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag] worked with the LSU defensive line this spring. Lindsey will work with the interior defensive line while new addition [autotag]John Jancek[/autotag] handles the outside linebackers.

After some minor shuffling, LSU’s staff should now be complete barring any unforeseen departures. Here are five things to know about the newest assistant.

Report: LSU close to hiring defensive line coach from SEC foe

The Tigers are reportedly targeting Jimmy Lindsey, who has been South Carolina’s defensive line coach since 2021, for the vacancy left by Jamar Cain.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] seems to be close to completing the Tigers’ on-field coaching staff entering the 2023 season.

LSU is reportedly targeting South Carolina defensive line coach [autotag]Jimmy Lindsey[/autotag] to fill the vacant position on staff left by [autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag], who left for a role with the Denver Broncos, according to Football Scoop. Per the report, a deal could be finalized as soon as this weekend.

Defensive analyst [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag], who returned to Baton Rouge this offseason, filled in coaching the defensive line group during spring practice.

Lindsey spent the last two seasons in Columbia as the Gamecocks’ defensive line coach. Before that, he was the defensive ends coach at Illinois in 2020 and later served as the interim defensive coordinator for the season finale after then-coach Lovie Smith was fired.

Prior to his stint with the Illini, Lindsey made stops as an assistant at Western Kentucky, Georgia Southern, Furman, UT-Martin, Miami (Ohio) and Gardner-Webb, as well as multiple stints at his alma mater, Chattanooga.

Brian Kelly breaks down LSU’s defensive line depth in 2023

Here’s how the depth is shaping up on the defensive line as spring comes to a close.

With [autotag]Dashawn Womack[/autotag] and [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] getting back to the practice field, LSU’s defensive line is looking healthier.

However, don’t expect to see them out there on Saturday.

“It’s just not something that is worth the risk,” Kelly said when discussing potentially playing Smith, who is coming off a torn ACL, in the spring game.

With LSU thin all spring on the defensive line, several players got more reps this spring. Kelly believes that’s helped LSU improves its depth. On four-star freshman [autotag]Jaxon Howard[/autotag], Kelly said he benefited from extra work that wouldn’t have been there if LSU was fully healthy.

On the interior, [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag] also impressed Kelly, getting plenty of reps at several spots up front. [autotag]Paris Shand[/autotag], the Arizona transfer with a chance to take over for [autotag]Ali Gaye[/autotag], has also made strides.

“You could see his progress and his grit kind of grow throughout the spring to the point where we were like, that was a really good spring for him,” Kelly said.

Kelly also cited [autotag]Tygee Hill[/autotag] and [autotag]Fitzgerald West[/autotag] as two guys who benefitted from the available work.

The main takeaway: Kelly likes the depth LSU has up front.

Smith and [autotag]Mekhi Wingo[/autotag] are surefire starters up the middle, but it’s wide open outside of that.

It’s also worth noting this group has been working under interim defensive line coach [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag] as LSU looks to replace [autotag]Jamar Cain[/autotag].

Texas A&M defensive line commit wants to come back to LSU after spring practice visit

The Tigers hosted Dealyn Evans for an unofficial visit this past weekend.

The Tigers could be making progress toward what would be a massive flip in the 2024 recruiting class.

This past weekend, LSU hosted Texas A&M defensive line commit [autotag]Dealyn Evans[/autotag] for a visit to check out spring practice. According to a report from On3’s Billy Embody (subscription required), Evans had a productive visit and would like to make a return trip once the team hires a new defensive line coach, though he had positive things to say about interim [autotag]Gerald Chatman[/autotag].

He said that he will likely use that second trip to determine whether the Tigers receive one of his five official visits. He plans to return to College Station for the Aggies’ spring game, and he has visits set with Alabama (April 22) and TCU (April 29). He also said he plans to visit Florida.

The Longview (Tex.) Pine Tree prospect is a four-star recruit and ranks as the No. 125 player nationally (and No. 16 defensive lineman) per On3’s Industry Rankings.
