Georgia vs Auburn Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

Didn’t you used to be Georgia?

The whining over the performance in the 39-22 win over Kent State was overblown – it was an unfocused effort for a team that played like it was taking a break – but the 26-22 win over Missouri was way too close against a mediocre team.

What’s going wrong?

The pass rush has all of a sudden gone bye bye, star DT Jalen Carter has a knee injury, and the five turnovers after not giving it away in any of the first three games showed just how off the team is.

Auburn’s defense isn’t taking the ball away, but it has to somehow not screw up. The passing game has to be fearless from the start, the defense has to continue to be solid against the run after allowing just 3.7 yards per carry so far, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Georgia Will Win

Auburn turns it over. A lot.

It didn’t lose the ball in the overtime win over Missouri, and it ended up a +2 in turnover margin helped by a miraculous fumble to close. However, it turned it over two times in each of the first two games, and four times against Penn State, and four times against LSU.

At -8 Auburn is the third-worst team in the nation in turnover margin, and it starts with an offensive line that’s having huge problems keeping defenses out of the backfield. This is where the Dawg O line starts to eat.

More than anything else …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Auburn just doesn’t score.

Turnovers have killed too many drives, but it doesn’t have any semblance of consistency and can’t figure out how to get this all going.

Dealing with an angry Georgia team that’s looking to get its mojo back is no way to rebound.

It still won’t be the Georgia we saw over the first three games, but the turnovers will stop, and the final score will make this seem like it was easy. The Auburn D, though, will keep this from being at total wipeout.

Georgia vs Auburn Game Preview

Why Georgia Will Win

The defense continues to dominate.

The Bulldogs played three SEC teams, a UAB team that’s among the best in Conference USA, and Clemson – albeit a Clemson that’s a shadow of its former self – and they’re No. 1 in the nation in total defense, No. 1 in scoring denies, No. 1 in pass defense, and great in just about every other defensive category.

And why?

It starts with a tremendous front line that’s not getting moved even a little bit and can get behind the line on a regular basis. It stuffed Arkansas for 75 rushing yards and only allowed more than 100 yards once.

Auburn was able to run well against Akron and Alabama State, and it wasn’t bad over the last three games. Now it’s going to be about whether or not Bo Nix and the passing game really can come through against an elite D.

Nix was fine against LSU – and was praised a bit too much for a few key throws in the win – but he’s barely pushing past the 50% passing mark over his last four games.

But …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Auburn Will Win

Auburn can play a little run D, too.

The Tigers were leaky against Georgia State, but stoned LSU for 33 yards, stopped Penn State for 84, and come into this with the nation’s eighth-best run defense.

Georgia’s offensive line has been fantastic over the last two games for a ground game that ran for over 500 yards in the wins over Vanderbilt and Arkansas. However, the O might not be able to get away with Stetson Bennett not playing a big role this week.

JT Daniels is still trying to get healthy and is questionable to get back in the mix this week. Bennett is a decent veteran who was fine against Vanderbilt and completed 7-of-11 passes against Arkansas, but there weren’t any stressful plays needing to be made.

If Auburn can grind this down a bit and stall the Georgia running game, it’ll take its chances with Bennett trying to push the ball down the field with the thin Dawg receiving corps.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Georgia defense will take over once again.

Auburn will be rocking, the defense will be terrific, and the energy will be enough to get up early.

A Bennett pick will have something to do with that.

But the Georgia lines will once again be the star, Bennett will settle in, and again, the D will lock down. The Tigers will have their chances, but the Dawgs will own the second half to get out alive.

Why Georgia Will Win

To beat Auburn, you have to be able to hold up against their lines. Georgia is one of the few teams with the offensive front to do more than just hold its own against this group – it’s not letting Jake Fromm get touched all the often –  and the defensive front has been a rock against the run.

The UGA offense might not be anything scintillating, and the downfield passing attack is a wee bit lacking, but the defense is making up for it by currently raking second in the nation behind just Ohio State in scoring defense while leading the SEC in total D.

The line isn’t giving up a thing against the run – only three teams have rushed for more than 100 yards, and UK has a season-high 160 yards against the Bulldog front – and the secondary has been able to keep the big plays to a minimum, too.

Are you ready to believe in Bo Nix? The Auburn freshman quarterback has been solid throughout the year, and he was great in the win over Ole Miss, but in the three big games so far – Oregon, Florida and LSU – he failed to hit 42% of his passes. But …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Auburn Will Win

All three of those games against the nasty teams on the Tiger schedule were away from Jordan-Hare. He doesn’t have to be Joe Burrow, and he doesn’t have to do anything special. He has to keep the mistakes to a minimum, and he has to connect on the throws that are there.

The Georgia defense might be great, but it doesn’t generate a lot of pressure, and the secondary doesn’t take the ball away with just one pick in the last four games and six on the season.

The bigger concern for Georgia is the stunning inconsistencies in the passing game. Weather played a role in some of the downs games for Fromm, and he hasn’t thrown a pick in any game other than the loss to South Carolina, but last week he couldn’t get much going in the win over Missouri, and his accuracy has been all over the place lately after a terrific start.

The Auburn secondary struggled against Oregon’s Justin Herbert, and it got hit hard by Burrow in the loss to LSU, but for the most part it’s been able to keep the downfield connections to a minimum, and the D as a whole is fantastic on third downs.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia’s defense is better on third downs.

It’s going to be a low-scoring fight with neither team being able to run the ball effectively enough to establish any sort of a rhythm.

Both teams will have their chances to take over in the second half, and both defenses will clamp down. Georgia will be a wee bit better in the red zone, Fromm will be a wee bit better than Nix.
