Georgia freshman projected as first-round 2025 NBA draft pick

UGA basketball true freshman, former five-star recruit is projected to go early in the 2025 NBA draft

Georgia Bulldogs basketball freshman Asa Newell has been projected to be selected in the first-round of the 2025 NBA draft. Newell, a former five-star recruit, is already having a huge impact for this Georgia team.

The 6-foot-11, 220-pound freshman is a big reason why Georgia basketball is 2-0. Newell is averaging 20 points, 3.5 blocks and 7.5 rebounds per game to begin the 2024-2025 college basketball season.

Tankathon projects that Newell will be a late lottery pick in the 2025 draft. In fact, Tankathon has Newell landing with the Atlanta Hawks at pick No. 14 in their latest mock draft. Yes, it is very early in the process, but so far, so good for Newell.

Additionally, ESPN has Newell going a little bit later in the 2025 draft. ESPN projects (subscription required) that Newell will go No. 20 to the Oklahoma City Thunder, which would be an excellent fit for the Georgia forward.

“His mobility, fluidity, explosiveness, body control and touch around the rim allowed him to dominate the interior while also making quite a few plays defensively,” said Jonathan Givony of ESPN.
“Newell also has the green light to shoot 3-pointers, which is very interesting at 6-foot-11,” continued Givony. NBA teams are always looking for shooting.

Georgia basketball fans can watch the Bulldogs on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN+ as Georgia takes on 3-0 North Florida.

TV, kickoff time set for Georgia vs. UMass game

Georgia hosts UMass on Nov. 23. When and where can UGA football fans watch the game?

The Georgia Bulldogs will host UMass Minutemen on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 12:45 p.m. ET. The Georgia-UMass game will be televised on the SEC Network.

Georgia is 7-2 and needs to beat Tennessee to keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive. UMass is just 2-7. The Minutemen do have a shared opponent with Georgia. UMass lost at Mississippi State 45-20 while Georgia beat Mississippi State at home 41-31.

UMass quarterback Taisun Phommachanh also may be familiar to Georgia fans. Phommachanh began his career at Clemson and later transferred to Georgia Tech before ending up at UMass.

The early kickoff time is a scheduling win for Georgia. The Bulldogs get a few more hours to prepare for Georgia Tech, who Georgia plays on Black Friday.

UMass is the second of three consecutive home games that Georgia ends the season with. ESPN’s matchup predictor gives Georgia a 99% chance to beat UMass. Georgia’s offense should finally be able to find a rhythm against UMass’ defense which has struggled all season long.

Georgia Bulldogs drop in ESPN’s Football Power Index

The Georgia Bulldogs drop in ESPN’s Football Power Index rankings after their 28-10 loss to the Ole Miss Rebels.

ESPN’s FPI (Football Power Index) is out after Week 11’s college football action, which featured several games that shook up the ACC and SEC.

According to ESPN, FPI is defined as “a predictive rating system designed to measure team strength and project performance going forward.” In the FPI, nine of the top 25 teams are in the SEC, including five of the top 10. The SEC is again looking like the best conference in college football.

Thanks to the previously No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs’ 28-10 loss to the No. 16 Ole Miss Rebels, they slide down to No. 6. That puts them behind three teams in the SEC: Alabama, Texas, and Ole Miss. Alabama earns the No. 1 spot after their dominating 42-13 win against LSU and they have the highest percentage to make the playoffs outside of Texas.

There was a major upset that took place in Georgia with the previosly undefeated Miami Hurricanes losing to Georgia Tech and hurting their ACC championship hopes.

The Yellow Jackets took a 14-10 lead in the second quarter and never let go. Miami did have a chance to drive down the field with two minutes left in the fourth, but Cam Ward was strip sacked by Tech’s Romello Height.

For Georgia Bulldogs fans, Week 12 will be a do-or-die matchup vs. the No. 7 Tennessee Volunteers. A loss could doom Georgia to miss the College Football Playoff for the second straight season.

Best photos from Georgia’s rainy loss at Ole Miss

A squirrel briefly stole the show in Georgia’s 28-10 loss to Ole Miss

The Georgia Bulldogs fell 28-10 in a tough, rainy SEC game to the Ole Miss Rebels. Ole Miss outplayed Georgia, but the Rebels did get a few fortunate deflections in their massive home win.

Georgia’s offensive line played poorly (five sacks allowed) and the UGA offense had three turnovers (two fumbles). Georgia’s defense allowed Ole Miss to pile up yardage, but the Dawgs stood tall in the red zone.

Georgia got off to a 7-0 lead over Ole Miss thanks to a Nate Frazier rushing touchdown on fourth down. However, Mississippi outscored UGA 28-3 from that point on despite not having quarterback Jaxson Dart for the ensuing drive.

Ole Miss preserved their College Football Playoff hopes with a win over Georgia. The Bulldogs now are searching for answers ahead of their Week 12 clash with Tennessee. Georgia faces a potential elimination game against Tennessee on Saturday and will need all hands on deck.

Georgia’s Kirby Smart on celebrating Jake Pope: ‘What an idiot’

Georgia coach Kirby Smart wasn’t happy with DB Jake Pope

Georgia football coach Kirby Smart became aware of redshirt sophomore DB celebrating on the field after Dawgs’ loss to Ole Miss on Saturday.

Smart explained Pope’s, um, not smart actions, by starting with “What an idiot” and then explaining it as a friend of Pope who the player had not seen in a long time.

Still…

Pope addressed the moment via social media:

“I wanted to address the videos that have been put out after the Ole Miss game,” Pope posted on Twitter. “First and foremost I wanted to say sorry for the way it was taken out of perspective and has caused distractions/commotion for my teammates and coaches. This is not representative of who I am in any way. In no way, shape or form would I ever celebrate a loss in this program and anyone who knows me well knows that.

Kirby Smart responded to the video of UGA safety Jake Pope celebrating his own team’s loss to Ole Miss

It was so strange to see.

Georgia’s College Football Playoff hopes took a major hit on Saturday against Ole Miss as the Bulldogs dropped their second game of the season, putting them awfully close to “First Team Out” territory. So, with that in mind, you would expect every Georgia player to be demoralized as Ole Miss fans stormed the field at Vaught–Hemingway Stadium.

Well, for one Georgia player, that wasn’t exactly the case.

Video hit social media after the game that showed Georgia safety Jake Pope jumping up and down in celebration while surrounded by Ole Miss fans. It was something you’d never expect to see from a college football player — no matter the team.

On Monday, head coach Kirby Smart was asked about the video, and he said that Pope was embarrassed, explaining it as Pope seeing his friends.

Smart said:

“What an idiot. What — I mean, just stupid. I didn’t see it until today, but he’s embarrassed by it, he’s upset about it. And that’s obviously a childhood friend of his … hadn’t seen him in forever. It’s not real smart, but to be honest with you, I don’t have time to waste energy on that.”

Pope learned the hard way that you kind of stand out in a crowd while wearing an opposing team’s uniform.

Kirby Smart calls Georgia player an idiot for celebrating with Ole Miss

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart did not mince words when he found out one of his players celebrated with an Ole Miss fan after Georgia’s loss

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart had harsh words for Georgia safety Jake Pope, who celebrated with a childhood friend after Georgia lost to Ole Miss.

Pope, who transferred to Georgia from Alabama, primarily plays special teams. Pope has appeared in just three games this season and has not recorded any statistics.

“What an idiot. Just stupid,” Smart said on the video of Pope celebrating with an Ole Miss fan. “I didn’t see it until today. He’s embarrassed about it. He’s upset about it. That’s obviously a childhood friend of his. They grew up and played with at Buford. Hadn’t seen him in forever. Just not real smart.”

“But to be honest with I don’t have time to waste energy on that,” continued Smart. “You know what I’m saying. My focus is on Tennessee. I’m not real worried on that.”

Speaking of Tennessee, Georgia will host Tennessee at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.

When do CFP rankings come out? Date, time for Georgia football

Georgia football will learn where it stands in the second CFP rankings after their loss to Ole Miss

The Georgia Bulldogs have their backs against the wall after losing 28-10 to Ole Miss. Fortunately, we are no longer in the four-team College Football Playoff era.

Georgia remains a SEC championship contender, but the Bulldogs must defeat the Tennessee Volunteers this Saturday. Tennessee is on top of the SEC standings. Georgia has to win the SEC championship in order to secure a first-round bye in the playoff.

Georgia football College Football Playoff projection

We project Georgia to be ranked No. 11 in the second playoff rankings behind a pair of two-loss teams in Alabama and Ole Miss. Georgia lost to both Alabama and Ole Miss. We do think Georgia will be ranked over several one-loss teams like Miami and SMU. Georgia was No. 3 in the previous playoff rankings.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

The top four seeds will be on a bye as the CFP kicks off. The next four highest-seeded teams will host on-campus playoff games as follows:

  • No. 5 vs No. 12, winner will play No. 4
  • No. 6 vs No. 11, winner will play No. 3
  • No. 7 vs No. 10, winner will play No. 2
  • No. 8 vs No. 9, winner will play No. 1

Did Georgia’s Jake Pope really celebrate with Ole Miss fans on field after Bulldogs lost?

What’s this all about?

Huh. This is sure to be a problem for Georgia fans.

The Bulldogs lost badly to Ole Miss on Saturday 28-10, leaving the No. 11 (for now) team in the nation with two losses. Not great.

Ole Miss fans also prematurely stormed the field and eventually tore down the goalposts, and it was in that pandemonium that we see the video below — it’s Georgia safety Jake Pope, jumping up and down with some Ole Miss fans. Some people wonder if those die-hards are the family or friends of offensive lineman Reece McIntyre.

We have zero context, no word on why he reacted like this, nada. But we’re pretty sure Georgia’s Kirby Smart will be asked about it at some point, along with why Carson Beck was smiling on the sidelines, although the QB addressed that on Satuday.
