Panthers retain 13 assistant coaches, including entire defensive staff

Panthers DC Ejiro Evero will have his entire staff back for 2024.

The Carolina Panthers did more than just roll out the hirings of six new faces on Thursday. They also announced the returns of 13 familiar ones.

In addition to their additions, the team is retaining 13 assistant coaches—headlined by defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. Evero will be joined back by his entire defensive staff.

The group is as follows:

  • Dom Capers (defensive assistant)
  • Todd Wash (defensive line coach)
  • Bert Watts (secondary/safeties coach)
  • Jonathan Cooley (secondary/cornerbacks coach)
  • Peter Hansen (inside linebackers coach)
  • Tem Lukabu (outside linebackers coach)
  • DeAngelo Hall (assistant defensive backs coach)
  • Mayur Chaudhari (defensive assistant)
  • Bobby Maffei (defensive quality control coach)

Carolina will also keep a few offensive minds in senior assistant Jim Caldwell and offensive assistant Mike Bercovici. Game management coordinator George Li will be staying on as well.

Along with Evero, the organization previously announced the hirings of their two new coordinators in Brad Idzik and Tracy Smith—who will lead the offense and special teams, respectively.

Panthers add George Li as game management assistant

Frank Reich has brought on George Li, who will serve as the Panthers game management coordinator.

The Carolina Panthers have been so busy adding coaches during the past week that it’s kind of difficult to keep track. So it was awfully nice of head coach Frank Reich to give us a heads up on another.

While discussing the expected role of senior assistant Jim Caldwell during his presser on Tuesday, Reich mentioned that the team has added George Li as their game management coordinator.

“But really, the role with Coach Caldwell—it’s gonna be a little different,” he said. “He and I have talked about this and think the best value is that if he is intertwined—almost like I am as a head coach—he’s intertwined in the game management stuff with George Li, our game management coordinator, with Chris Tabor on special teams, with Ejiro on defense and certainly us on offense.”

Li has already worked alongside Reich, who brought him on with the Indianapolis Colts back in May of 2018. He served not only as the game management coordinator there, but also a senior football strategy analyst.

Prior to that stint, Li spent a handful of seasons with the Oakland Raiders. Starting as a defensive assistant in 2011, he’d climb his way up to a football operations statistical analyst and director of coaching analytics up until 2018.

Panthers hire Colts game management analyst George Li

The Panthers hired Colts senior football strategy/game management analyst George Li.

The Carolina Panthers have hired another member of the Indianapolis Colts front office, this time in the form of senior football strategy/game management analyst George Li.

A major part of the analytics department, Li worked closely with John Park, who still serves as the director of football research. Li will be hired for the role of game management coordinator, which seems to hold a similar role of what he had with the Colts.

Former head coach Frank Reich hasn’t been shy about plucking staff members and coaches from the Colts this offseason. He also brought along Brian Decker to the front office as well as Parks Frazier, who is expected to be the passing-game coordinator.

Former Colts head coach Jim Caldwell also joined the staff in the title of senior assistant.

The Colts are still putting together the staff under new head coach Shane Steichen. You can follow along for updates with our tracker.
