Pete Carroll confirms QB Russell Wilson badly sprains finger Week 5

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson sustained a badly sprained finger on his throwing hand in the team’s Week 5 loss to the Rams.

The Seattle Seahawks fell to 2-3 on the year Thursday night after losing to the Los Angeles Rams Week 5, but the defeat might not be the worst news of the night.

Starting quarterback Russell Wilson left the ball game in the third quarter after sustaining a finger injury and backup signal-caller Geno Smith entered to finish the contest.

During his postgame press conference, coach Pete Carroll confirmed Wilson had a badly sprained finger.

“The was a significant night because Russell wasn’t able to finish the second half,” Carroll said. “He’s got a badly sprained finger that we need to figure out. There’s a lot more work to be done in assessing all of that.  Russell is one of the great healers of all time and he’ll do whatever he can to get back just as soon as absolutely possible.”

With more testing still to be done, Carroll was unable to give any sort of timeline for Wilson’s return. Hopefully an update will be available by the time Carroll addresses the media on Friday.

Russell Wilson injured his throwing hand on this hit by Aaron Donald

Wilson suffered an injury to his throwing hand in tonight’s loss to the Rams.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has never missed a game in his NFL career and will probably insist on playing next Sunday night against the Steelers regardless of how he feels. Right now it looks like he won’t be close to 100%, though. Wilson suffered an injury to his throwing hand in tonight’s loss to the Rams.

Here’s the play. Wilson’s throwing motion follows through and his hand hits (who else?) Aaron Donald’s elbow on the way down.

Geno Smith put in a valiant effort in the fourth quarter with Wilson sidelined, but obviously he’s not in the same class of quarterback.

Update:

Coach Pete Carroll says Wilson has a “badly sprained” finger.

Geno Smith replaces injured Russell Wilson, throws TD pass for Seattle Seahawks

Geno Smith to the rescue for the Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks found themselves in a hole in the second half of an NFC West game with the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday. It got deeper when great quarterback Russell Wilson had to leave the game with an injured finger.

Wilson appeared to dislocate his finger in the second half. The training staff tried to pop it back into place. He remained in the game but after he went to the sideline, Wilson was unable to go and Geno Smith came into the game.

Smith led the Seahawks on a touchdown drive of 98 yards in 10 plays. The scoring play was a pass from Smith to DK Metcalf, good for 23 yards.

Smith was 5-for-5 on the drive for 72 yards and had a 6-yard run.

After the PAT, Seattle trailed, 16-14, in the fourth quarters/

It was Smith’s first TD pass since Dec. 3, 2017, when he was a New York Giant and threw a scoring pass to Evan Engram.

Seahawks Preseason: 6 takeaways from a shutout win vs. Chargers

Here are a few takeaways from tonight’s game.

The Seattle Seahawks looked languid during their first two preseason games of the year, both embarrassing losses. They set an entirely different tone against the Los Angeles Chargers though, showing a lot more energy all around in what became a dominant 27-0 victory.

Here are a few takeaways from tonight’s game.

Seahawks injury updates: QB Geno Smith has cleared concussion protocol

Good news: Smith has apparently cleared the concussion protocol and is back at practice, per head coach Pete Carroll.

Geno Smith took a scary hit in last week’s preseason opener against the Raiders. The Seahawks’ No. 2 quarterback left the field soon after and was eventually ruled out with a concussion.

Good news: Smith has apparently cleared the concussion protocol and is back at practice, per head coach Pete Carroll.

“He had a really good couple of days, and he’s back on the field today. We’re really happy that he made it through it, so he’s clear.”

However, Carroll said he’s not sure if Smith will suit up for Saturday night’s home game against the Broncos. Carroll was also mum on the possibility of starters playing. Even if Russell Wilson is active, it’s unlikely he will get a lot of snaps given the state of Seattle’s offensive line. That should give the coaching staff more time to evaluate backups Alex McGough and Sean Mannion.

Carroll also offered injury updates on a few other players.

Wide receivers Penny Hart (ankle) and Dee Eskridge (toe) are not expected to play. Neither is center Ethan Pocic (hamstring). Offensive tackle Jamarco Jones (back) should be out there, while defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche could go either way.

Seahawks injury updates: Dee Eskridge, Geno Smith, Rashaad Penny

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll gave a few injury updates in his press conference following today’s practice.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll gave a few injury updates in his press conference following today’s practice.

First, backup quarterback Geno Smith is still out after sustaining a concussion in Saturday night’s loss to the Raiders. Smith got rocked in the first quarter on a cornerback blitz and had to leave the game not long after. Carroll says he stayed home today.

On a positive note, wide receiver Dee Eskridge has been activated from PUP and was at practice today. Carroll thinks he will be ready to go Week 1. Meanwhile, running back Rashaad Pennny is on track to play against the Broncos on Saturday.

Carroll also said cornerback D.J. Reed won’t play but could be back next week.

As was previously reported by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, Carroll confirmed that tight end Colby Parkinson won’t require surgery on the foot that was broken last year and got re-aggravated last week.

Pete Caroll on Seahawks offense vs. Raiders: ‘We were messy’

Coach Pete Carroll called the Seattle Seahawks’ offense “messy” after their preseason loss to the Raiders in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

The Seattle Seahawks lost their first preseason game in Las Vegas to the Raiders and coach Pete Carroll finally got a good look at some of the backups on the field. And, he wasn’t too pleased with what he saw from the offense on Saturday night.

“We were messy, we just didn’t convert,” Carroll said during his post-game press conference. “We had some chances to get our third downs. We had to get some third-down wins, and didn’t. The sequence starts all over again.”

Carroll also had a game plan for quarterback Russell Wilson’s backup, Geno Smith, who ended up leaving the game in the first half after sustaining a concussion.

‘We really wanted to throw the ball with Geno,” Carroll explained. “We came out to do that. We wanted to make sure we got some chances, and I think it was the third play and he gets wacked. So we didn’t really get him the opportunity that we were hoping for. We should have thrown the ball a bunch with him.

“That was just a great chance to give him some time to play some football, but we couldn’t get it done.”

There is no media availability Monday, but Carroll should have an update on Smith’s status by Tuesday’s practice.

Seattle Seahawks injury updates after preseason loss to Raiders

Pete Carroll provided a number of player injury updates after the Seattle Seahawks fell to the Raiders in Las Vegas to open their preseason.

The Seattle Seahawks fell to the Raiders 20-7 in Las Vegas Saturday night to open up their preseason. In addition to notching their first loss of the summer, the Seahawks suffered a couple of injuries as well.

Backup quarterback Geno Smith, who got the start for Russell Wilson, was the first to fall, leaving the game in the first half with a concussion.

“He got knocked, he got hit really hard,” coach Pete Carroll explained in his postgame press conference. “He was OK and then it just kind of progressed as he went back in and we had to take him out. He wasn’t ready to play.”

Offensive lineman Phil Haynes left the contest with a left knee injury after getting the nod at right guard in place of Gabe Jackson.

“Phil Haynes got a little bit of a sore knee or something like that,” Carroll said.”But it’s nothing serious, so we were very fortunate in that regard.”

The Seahawks players have an off day on Sunday but return to the practice field on Monday.
