Canelo responde a Ryan García: “No has logrado nada”

Canelo Álvarez lanza reto y quiere retirar a GGG

The Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin trilogy is officially on

Canelo and GGG will complete their memorable fight trilogy in September.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – [autotag]Canelo Alvarez[/autotag] and [autotag]Gennady Golovkin[/autotag] will complete their memorable fight trilogy in September.

Alvarez and Golovkin will resume their rivalry Sept. 17 after a four-year break, promoters Matchroom Boxing announced Tuesday. Alvarez already said he intended to take the fight while speaking at his invitational golf tournament in Naucalpan, Mexico, on Monday.

The fighters met in 2017 and again in 2018 for two highly entertaining middleweight matchups. They fought to a split draw in the first bout, and Alvarez won a narrow majority decision in the second meeting.

The third fight will be a 168-pound super middleweight contest between the 40-year-old Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) and Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs), who will turn 32 this summer. Alvarez is the undisputed world champion at 168 pounds, holding all four major titles.

“I feel very happy and proud to be able to give the best fights, and this fight won’t be an exception,” Alvarez said in a statement.

Alvarez announced earlier this year that he intended to fight Golovkin in the fall after taking on light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in May. That plan was put into question after Bivol upset Alvarez by unanimous decision on May 7.

Bivol hoped to book a rematch with the biggest star in boxing after his breakthrough upset, but Alvarez ultimately decided to proceed with the most lucrative potential bout and the resumption of a remarkable rivalry.

The location for the third fight wasn’t announced, but its scheduling on Mexican Independence Day weekend makes it likely to be held in Las Vegas. The fighters’ first two meetings were on the same holiday weekend at T-Mobile Arena on the south end of the Las Vegas Strip, and both were sellouts.

[vertical-gallery id=335894]

The third bout is likely the richest fight currently possible in boxing, given both fighters’ large fan bases and the entertaining nature of their rivalry to date. Golovkin and his fans believe the former middleweight kingpin won both of the first two fights, while Alvarez is in need of redemption after his shocking loss to Bivol.

In the fighters’ first bout, most ringside observers thought Golovkin had done more than enough to beat Alvarez, who had previously lost only to Floyd Mayweather in his career. But while one judge favored Golovkin and another scored it a draw, judge Adalaide Byrd inexplicably called it 118–110 in favor of Alvarez, who was consistently outlanded by Golovkin throughout the bout.

Alvarez tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug clenbuterol between the first two fights, and his suspension meant the rematch was postponed from May to September. While many ringside observers again thought Golovkin had won, two judges favored the improved Alvarez 115-113, and the third scored it a draw.

Both fighters initially expressed interest in a third meeting for 2019, but the sides drifted apart while Golovkin dealt with management squabbles and Alvarez moved on to less daunting challenges. Alvarez spent 2021 collecting all four major titles at super middleweight.

Golovkin has fought only four times in four years since his loss to Alvarez, also breaking up with longtime trainer Abel Sanchez during that stretch. After he reclaimed two of his middleweight belts before the pandemic, Golovkin ended a 16-month ring absence in April by stopping Ryota Murata in Japan.

Matchroom signed Alvarez with strong plans for a third fight with Golovkin in September — and the Mexican superstar is in need of a bounce-back fight after he struggled mightily in his second career bout at light heavyweight. Bivol won 115-113 on all three scorecards in a fight that probably wasn’t that close.

“The Canelo vs. GGG trilogy is the biggest fight in boxing, and I am delighted to get this made for September 17,” Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn said. “These are two men that bitterly dislike each other and want to end this incredible series with a blistering KO. I truly believe this will be the most thrilling fight between these two great champions and it will be fireworks from the first bell to the last man standing.”

The Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin trilogy fight is officially happening in September

A Canelo-GGG trilogy is on the way!

Professional boxing has had quite a strong first half of 2022. From Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano on the women’s side to Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castano and Errol vs. Yordenis Ugas there’s been a number of highlight moments that capture why the sport is so spectacular.

The second half of the year appears to have plenty more in store.

Two of boxing’s biggest names are about to line it up for the third time. On Tuesday afternoon, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin confirmed to the boxing world via Twitter that a trilogy bout between the two fighters is on the way.

The third iteration of the Canelo-GGG will come five years after the first fight between the two concluded in a draw, and four years after the epic rematch that Alvarez won by majority decision in what was dubbed by Ring Magazine as “Fight of the Year 2018.”

Yet, the timing of this third bout is interesting.

Canelo went on to dominate the sport for four years until earlier this month when he was out-boxed in a loss to Dmitry Bivol. Meanwhile, Golovkin has fought four times since the 2018 loss to Alvarez — all wins.

But with Canelo coming off of his first defeat since 2013 and Golovkin now 40 years of age, will the trilogy give the boxing world what it wants?

Time will tell.

Gennadiy Golovkin KOs Ryota Murata, sets up third fight with Canelo Alvarez

Gennadiy Golovkin stopped Ryota Murata on Saturday to set up a third fight with Canelo Alvarez.

Gennadiy Golovkin can still bring it at 40.

Triple-G endured some difficult moments but gradually broke down and then stopped Ryota Murata in nine rounds to unify two middleweight titles Saturday in Saitama, Japan.

The victory sets up a third fight with rival Canelo Alvarez in September, although we’ll have to see what happens when the Mexican star fights light heavyweight titleholder Dmitry Bivol on May 7.

Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) had several challenges to overcome going into the fight. He turned the big 4-0 on Friday, he hadn’t fought in 16 months (Murata was out for 28) and he was fighting on Murata’s home turf.

And it looked in the early rounds as if Golovkin might not prevail. Both fighters had success in back-and-forth action but the aggressive Murata (16-3, 13 KOs) had Golovkin backing up, a strange sight for those who have followed Triple-G’s career.

The Japanese fighter’s body work also got the attention of Golovkin, who seemed to wince several times when Murata landed shots to the gut.

However, early in Round 6 Golovkin connected on a right hand that knocked the mouthguard out of Murata’s mouth. He wasn’t hurt significantly but that seemed to initiate his downfall, as Golovkin began to land hard punches at a higher rate.

Murata never gave up and had some effective flurries but he couldn’t keep Golovkin off of him and his body could no longer take the punishment.

Finally, Golovkin hurt Murata with the first punch in Round 9 – a straight right hand – and, sensing an opportunity to end the fight, followed with a barrage of accurate shots. Murata fought back bravely but a huge right hand knocked him to all fours and a cornerman threw in the towel, ending the fight.

The official time of the stoppage was 2:11 of Round 9.

Golovkin should now get his long-awaited third fight with Alvarez, against whom he fought to a disputed draw in 2017 and lost a close decision in 2018.

No deal is in place but the sides have made it known they want the fight to happen. It’s not clear how a loss or injury against Bivol might affect Alvarez-Golovkin III.

But Golovkin certainly did his part to make the showdown happen.

Will Demetrius Andrade vs. Jermall Charlo ever happen?

The path to a fight between middleweights Demetrius Andrade and Jermall Charlo is riddled with obstacles.

Editor’s note: This article was originally published on DAZN.com.

***

What’s next for middleweight contender Jermall Charlo after his impressive victory over Sergiy Derevyanchenko last month?

Will he face Canelo Alvarez? Could it be Gennadiy Golovkin? Will it be Perhaps Demetrius Andrade? Or is it someone else? The promoter of Andrade and Golovkin at Matchroom Boxing, Eddie Hearn, conducted an Instagram live chat at the end of last week declaring the fight to make is Charlo-Andrade.

Alvarez, Golovkin and Andrade hold major 160-pound titles. Charlo has a secondary belt.

“For me, the fight to make is Andrade against Charlo,” Hearn said. “I saw Charlo’s tweet last night, saying whatever it was saying, he wants to unify like his brother. There is an easy fight to be made there, Charlo against Andrade.

“People say Andrade don’t fight these guys. No one wants to fight him, but he’s a world champion ready to unify. So Andrade against Charlo, yes, please.”

In the latest episode of “Jabs with Mannix and Mora” on DAZN, hosts Chris Mannix and Sergio Mora discuss the potential Andrade-Charlo matchup. Mora, a former 154-pound titleholder, isn’t getting his hopes up.

“No,” Mora said. “It’s not going to get made because Demetrius Andrade is too good, he’s too smart, and he’s too savvy, and he’s too much of a southpaw, especially with that Olympic background. No way this fight happens.

“It’s sad because Demetrius Andrade is undefeated. He’s a champion, but he’s not going to fight the Golovkins, Canelo won’t mention his name, and you can bet Jermall Charlo is not going to mention his name, either.

“Andrade is just too good for his own good. He belongs on his own island of southpaws because that’s what happens. It’s a curse, especially if they have that Olympic pedigree. No one wants to touch him.”

Mannix agreed with his co-host but took it one step further in terms of the matchup’s significance in the boxing landscape.

“I don’t think there’s a better fight that can be made in all of boxing than Jermall Charlo vs. Demetrius Andrade,” Mannix said. “Two undefeated, 160-pounders [with] styles that would mesh well in the ring (which) would make an entertaining fight.

“The winner of that fight would make a lot of money and make themselves the strongest possible candidate to [face] Canelo in the fall of 2021. I don’t know how you look at this situation, Sergio, and not put all of it on Jermall Charlo.

“You could have this fight on Showtime pay-per-view. That’s fine. You could have this fight on DAZN and take the offer that Eddie Hearn made, which was in the neighborhood of $7 million for Jermall Charlo.

“I don’t understand for the life of me why is this isn’t a no-brainer. Charlo, I think, most likely is targeting a guy like Chris Eubank [Jr.]. That’s a fight that NOBODY cares about. I don’t care about Chris Eubank’s interim title. Nobody cares about that fight.

“People care about Charlo against a real name. Demetrius Andrade is that real name, who himself is just looking around wondering when his next opponent is going to materialize. This should be a no-brainer. Unfortunately, it is not.”

While Mannix and Mora believe the fight won’t happen because of Charlo, the latter feels there is a path to get to Andrade-Charlo.

“This reminds me of when Canelo was avoiding Erislandy Lara for so [long],” Mora said. “… He didn’t want to fight him. The only way that fight happened was when the fans forced that fight.

“And that’s what has to happen here for Charlo to fight Andrade. They are going to have to force that fight. They are going to have to shove that fight down his throat.

“They are going to have to overpay him that the promoters, the managers, and the fans are going to have to speak up and demand that fight.”
