Former Ohio State running back selected in USFL Draft

Former Ohio State running back selected in USFL Draft #GoBucks #USFL #USFLDraft

The United States Football League has finally ender their draft and in total, we have seen three former Ohio State Buckeyes hear their name called with the latest being the supremely talented Mike Weber. The former Big Ten Freshman of the Year was selected with the third selection in the 27th round by the New Jersey Generals.

I know it sounds like the 27th round is a bit late for someone of Weber’s caliber, but the USFL Draft segmented the rounds by position and this means that technically he was just the third running back selected in the draft.

Weber was with the Buckeyes from 2015 to 2018 and is most remembered for his phenomenal 2016 season in which he was named All-Big Ten and Big Ten Freshman of the Year. After being drafted in the seventh round, Weber had shots with a few NFL teams and will now get a shot at joining the ranks of Herschel Walker as a General great.

Redtails? Warriors? Braves? Picking Washington’s new mascot

While it seems that the Redskins won’t be the Redskins for much longer, fans should start thinking of a new mascot to go with.

Whether you want it to or not, it seems that the Washington Redskins will be changing their name sometime soon, and a new mascot will be utilized.

So what will the new name be? Will it be something tied to the Nation’s Capitol, like the Sentinels? Or the Warriors? Or the Monuments? What about something that carries on the ‘Red-‘ name so that the beloved #HTTR can stay? Something like Redtails, or Redspears?

There are a number of solid options, but here are our leaders in the clubhouse:

Washington Redtails:

The ‘Redtails’ seems to be the best option for Washington, as the name has a good bit of positive history in America, Redtails celebrates the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II, who were the first African-American military aviators in the U.S. Armed forces where were named because of their planes’ red tails.

If Washington were to go with this name, it would keep the #HTTR saying in place, and much of the history going forward with the name would be positive.

Washington Braves:

Keeping the Native American tradition alive, changing the name back to Braves would be an ode to history. The Redskins were originally the Boston Braves under George Preston Marshall before he changed them to the Boston Redskins, and then the Washington Redskins.

Washington Warriors:

The name ‘Warriors’ seems to roll off of the tongue, and alliteration is always nice. However, the fact that there is already a Golden State Warriors team that is so popular in the NBA makes me thing that this might be lower down on the list.

Washington Sentinels:

An ode to the Washington Sentinels in The Replacements, this name seems to be a favorite among many fans. It goes along with the theme of the Nation’s Capitol, and would be an easy rebrand. The only problem is that you’d lose out on the #HTTR motto, and have to go with #HTTS instead. Not as catchy, but still good.

Honorable mention:

  • Washington Monuments: In today’s day and age, no monument is safe.
  • Washington Generals: Thanks to the Harlem Globetrotters, this one is out.
  • Washington Capitals: Already a championship-winning hockey team.
  • Washington Presidents: Not terrible.
  • Washington Redspears: A little close to redtails, but keeps Native American tradition alive.
