Packers hosting UTEP QB Gavin Hardison on top-30 pre-draft visit

The Green Bay Packers are hosting UTEP quarterback Gavin Hardison on a top 30 visit ahead of the 2024 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers are hosting UTEP quarterback Gavin Hardison on a top 30 visit ahead of the 2024 NFL draft, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Teams are allowed to host up to 30 prospects on visits ahead of the draft. Packers Wire is tracking all the reported visits here.

Hardison, a JUCO transfer, started 35 games over five seasons at UTEP. He completed 570 of 1,061 passes for 7,963 yards, 40 touchdowns and 33 interceptions while also rushing for three touchdowns.

Hardison, who turns 24 in May, needed surgery to repair the UCL ligament and missed the final seven games of the 2023 season.

Hardison (6-1, 207) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.82 seconds, hit 28.5″ in the vertical leap, covered 9-3 in the broad jump and finished the short shuttle in 4.35 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.19 seconds at UTEP’s pro day.

The Packers will likely add competition to the quarterback room, either via the draft or college free agency. Hardison could be an option late on Day 3 or as a free agent.

Last year, the Packers hosted Sean Clifford on a pre-draft visit and then drafted him in the fifth round. Clifford will go into 2024 as the expected backup behind Jordan Love.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranks Hardison as the No. 19 overall quarterback in the class and a likely priority free agent.

Sooners cruise to 45-13 win over UTEP in Brent Venables’ head coaching debut

Led by a strong rushing attack and relentless pass rush, Oklahoma opened the season with a 45-13 win over the UTEP Miners.

Brent Venables will go to sleep a happy man tonight. His first game as head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners was a comfortable 45-13 win over the UTEP Miners.

Oklahoma hit the ground running and showcased the offensive tempo we heard so much about that will undoubtedly cause problems for other programs on OU’s schedule.

The defense came out flying, recording multiple stops on defense, and Oklahoma jumped out to a 21-point lead by the end of the first quarter.

Transfer quarterback [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] looked razor sharp and in control as he completed 15 of 23 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns to go along with one rushing score. He showed off his athleticism on his first score as a Sooner when he kept the ball on a zone read play call and found his way into the end zone.

Both of Gabriel’s touchdown passes went to fifth-year senior tight end [autotag]Brayden Willis[/autotag], who had three receptions for 40 yards and two touchdowns.

Willis is taking over ask the starting tight end after being a tight-end full-back hybrid for the last few years under Lincoln Riley.

An end-around to walk-on freshman wide receiver [autotag]Gavin Freeman[/autotag] turned into a 46-yard rushing touchdown that electrified the crowd.

The Sooners’ tempo was a noticeable change from how things had operated in recent years, as the first three scoring drives for the Sooners were under two minutes long. They were moving at warp speed, affecting the UTEP defense as they struggled to substitute and get lined up properly.

Both teams would settle in, and UTEP would eventually find the scoreboard to make it 21-10 late second quarter.

After going flat for a few drives offensively and defensively, Oklahoma tacked on another touchdown before the half to go in up 18 and never looked back.

The Sooners came out of the locker room in a bullying mood as their defense began to hit a little harder, and offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby was adamant about using his offensive line to just punish UTEP’s front by running the ball. The Sooners would finish with 259 yards rushing. Oklahoma averaged 8.1 yards per play and 6.8 yards per carry.

Eric Gray led the way with 102 yards on 16 carries, and Marcus Major added seven carries for 57 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, it was clear early on that Oklahoma didn’t want to give away any of their best defensive looks and coverages with much more challenging and meaningful opponents on the schedule.

They played off zone coverage much of the game and hardly did anything exotic with their blitz packages. Reggie Grimes made a statement during the game with his performance, as he ended up with 2.5 sacks in the first half. His sack at the end of the first half potentially took points off the scoreboard for the Miners.

Linebacker Danny Stutsman was an enforcer, laying heavy hits that were audible to the crowd. The defensive backs had solid games all around, with sophomore Billy Bowman breaking up a pass and playing tight coverage all day. Stutsman and Bowman tied for the team lead with nine total tackles on the afternoon.

True freshman R Mason Thomas used the opportunities he was given and even recorded half a sack. Fellow true freshman Gentry Williams shut down a UTEP scoring threat at the end of the game with an interception in the end zone.

The Sooners’ defense finished the game with six sacks and nine tackles for loss to help Oklahoma start the season 1-0. Oklahoma’s physicality on both sides of the ball offensively were the difference as the Sooners start this 2022 campaign on a winning note. They’ll host Kent State on September 10.

3 keys to an Oklahoma win in Brent Venables’ first game as a head coach

Oklahoma kicks off their season against the UTEP Miners. We discussed three keys to the game for Oklahoma.

Oklahoma gets set to kick off its 2022 campaign against the UTEP Miners on Saturday afternoon in Norman, Oklahoma. Sooner Nation has been itching to see their team play in meaningful action for the first time under new head coach Brent Venables. While Venables is far from new to roaming the Owen Field sidelines, the game against UTEP marks his first time as head coach.

His team is the more talented team, but that doesn’t mean anything if they don’t come out and execute. UTEP has a few players that could be potential thorns in Oklahoma’s side, and if the Sooners don’t execute, they could find themselves a little anxious while UTEP hangs around.

Here are three keys for the Oklahoma Sooners to start the season off 1-0.

Settle in early

It goes without saying, Oklahoma has to relax. They can’t come out pressing and trying to prove something by forcing plays that aren’t there.

The team has to execute within their defined roles. If that happens, the talent will take over, and the rest will work out the way most people believe it will against UTEP.

Some quick passes for Dillon Gabriel, a few touches for starting running back Eric Gray,  an early stop on defense, or a few early first downs on offense would be monumental in Oklahoma getting settled in and getting their own emotions in check.

Texas Football: Behind Enemy Lines with Adrian Broaddus of ESPN El Paso

Adrian Broaddus of ESPN El Paso sat down with Longhorns Wire to discuss the upcoming game. This weeks edition of ‘Behind Enemy Lines’.

The Texas Longhorns get their first state of the college football season on Saturday. Meanwhile the UTEP Miners will be playing in their second game of the season. Longhorns Wire spoke with ESPN El Paso’s Adrian Broaddus about the upcoming matchup in this week’s “Behind Enemy Lines” feature.

In their first game of the year, the Miners fell down early so what do they need to do?

“I think there is a lot of things the Miners need to clean up,” Broaddus continued “especially how slow they started off. It felt like the life got sucked out of them in the first half. Like oh it can’t be this again moment. The Miners found themselves in a 14-3 rut. They were able to dig themselves out but I would like to see them start off better. Especially against a very good Texas team this week.”

“This defense didn’t look like anything head coach Dana Dimel preached about over the offseason. They were supposed to look fresh with a bunch of new juco newcomers on this roster. So you want this group to gel a little better defensively. On offense you want to cling on to everything they did in the second half between Gavin Hardison and Deion Hankings on this team. ”

Provided the Texas Longhorns get off to a hot start, Broaddus shared the same sentiment of many around Austin. He believes that an early surge by Texas will bury UTEP. It would be a way to break the will of the UTEP team, especially when dealing with athletes the caliber of who will be wearing burnt orange on Saturday.
