No. 1-ranked Texas A&M baseball drops Game 3 vs. No. 14 Alabama

No. 1-ranked Texas A&M failed to outscore No, 14 Alabama, falling 10-9 in Game 3 of the series

No. 1-ranked Texas A&M flexed its muscle on Friday during the double-header vs. No. 14 Alabama in Tuscaloosa, earning a 10-5 comeback win in Game 1 and an 18-9 home run fest in Game 2, but failed to complete the sweep on Saturday afternoon.

Falling 10-9, starting pitcher Justin Lamkin has struggled on the mound, allowing five runs in just 1.2 innings pitched while earning a no-decision in the loss. Creating another hole to start the game, an Alabama grand slam in the second led to a 5-0 deficit before freshman phenom Gavin Grahovic got things going at the plate with an RBI single.

Later in the fourth, Grahovic continued to make an impact, hitting a base-clearing double to bring the score within one at 6-5. Adding another run off a solo shot, the Crimson Tide changed pitchers, resulting in a Travis Chesnut triple, driving Ali Camarillo home to tie the game at 7, followed by Jace LaViolette’s 20th home run of the year to take an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

After tying the game at 8 in the sixth, Alabama kept the Aggies at bay until Caden Sorrell’s sac fly in the seventh to take their final lead of the game, until the Crimson Tide scored two more runs at the bottom of the frame to earn a much-needed victory in SEC play.

Texas A&M will return to Blue Bell Park on Tuesday, April 23, to face Houston at 6:00 p.m. CT. The game will air on SEC+.

Note: Jace LaViolette became the first Texas A&M baseball player to hit 20 home runs in consecutive seasons.

Final stats: Gavin Grahovic had two hits and four RBI, and Jace LaViolette had one hit and three RBI.

‘No words to describe them’: Texas A&M freshman Gavin Grahovac left speechless by 12th Man

“Unbelievable, there are literally no words to describe them. They bring the energy every single game no matter how many people are here.”

The Texas A&M baseball team has become the No. 1 team in the nation due to countless contributions from upperclassmen but there have been several underclassmen who have also stood out.

At the top of that list is freshman third baseman Gavin Grahovac, who bats at the top of the order.

“I think it was from one to nine. Every guy did it, every guy was hitting the ball great, we all saw it great. I don’t know, we just came out and wanted to compete. That’s what we continue wanting to do and what we continue planning to do,” Grahovac said postgame on Sunday. “Vandy is a historically great team. Coach Corbin is a great coach and all of those players are great. In the SEC, you can’t expect nothing less than greatness from every team so we have to come out here and compete.

“Coach always tells us to keep playing because the game isn’t over until it’s over.”

Grahovac was left speechless by the 12th Man’s attendance this weekend during a three-game SEC sweep of No. 12 Vanderbilt.

“Unbelievable, I don’t know if you guys saw my tweet but there are literally no words to describe them,” Grahovac told the media. “They bring the energy every single game no matter how many people are here. Obviously, we had some big crowds this weekend so that was awesome. There are no words to describe them, they are absolutely amazing.”

SEC names freshman third baseman Gavin Grahovac as Freshman of the Week

Texas A&M freshman third baseman Gavin Grahovac was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after a strong series against Vanderbilt

Texas A&M freshman Gavin Grahovac has taken charge of the starting third base position and is one of the better lead-off hitters in all of college baseball. He currently sits in the top ten in the SEC for the following categories: No. 4 runs scored (49), No. 10 hits (49), No. 11 doubles, No. 11 home runs and No. 7 RBI (42).

The SEC recognized the freshman’s production after the big week by naming him SEC Freshman Player of the Week. Below is the excerpt from the release from the SEC officials:

Texas A&M’s Gavin Grahovac registered a .400/.526/.867 slash line to help the Aggies to a 4-0 record, including a sweep of No. 5 Vanderbilt. The freshman homered twice, drove in three RBI, scored eight times and drew four walks during the week. Both of his homers came on the weekend, and he registered three hits in the series finale on Sunday.

Texas A&M baseball climb to the top spot in the new USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Texas A&M jumps two spots to No. 1 in the country after a dominating week going 4-0 and sweeping No. 6 Vanderbilt

There’s a new sheriff in town for Week 9 and they reside in the great state of Texas. The Texas A&M Aggie baseball team (32-4, 11-4 SEC) has captured the number one spot in the USA TODAY Coaches poll after going 4-0 during the week and sweeping the No. 6 ranked Vanderbilt Commodores impressively. They hit a total of nine home runs over the weekend outscoring Vanderbilt 36-6 for their sweep of a ranked opponent since 2016.

If their weekly resume wasn’t already ready enough the previous two top teams both lost their series over the weekend. Arkansas dropped two out of three to Alabama and Clemson did the same to NC State.

After those developments it was all but written in stone that A&M would be the new No. 1 team in the country when the polls dropped. There is still a lot of baseball left to be played, but this solidified what a lot of experts have been saying about Jim Schlossnalge’s Aggies.

Here are the complete Week 9 rankings.

‘Brutal baseball’: Texas A&M head coach Jim Schlossnagle recaps walk-off win vs. UTSA

“We played about as brutal baseball that you can possibly play that I ever remember an A&M team playing, which was out of character for us.”

The No. 3 Texas A&M baseball team barely avoided an upset loss against in-state rival, UT San Antonio, on Tuesday night at Blue Bell Park.

After the game, head coach Jim Schlossnagle provided his summary of the contest, including senior catcher Jackson Appel’s 3-home run performance.

“We got (Appel) in that spot because he puts the ball in play. We’re thinking that Grahovac, LaViolette and Montgomery are going to be on base a lot,” Schlossnagle explained. “It’s not necessarily about his power but he did a good job of staying on top of the baseball. There was a weird wind, I couldn’t tell if the flag was blowing across the field a little bit east. I thought Grahovac’s ball had a chance and the balls hit to center and right field.

“We played about as brutal baseball that you can possibly play, that I ever remember an A&M team playing, either one I’ve coached or seen play, which was out of character for us. But I’m really proud of our team for staying in the fight.

“Zane got us some decent outs. Peery got us four outs. Cortez was obviously electric. If we just knew 8-of-10 times that we would get that for the rest of the season, we’re an infinitely better team.”

Perfect Game names multiple Texas A&M Aggies to their midseason All-American teams

Five Aggies make the Perfect Game midseason All-American baseball teams

The Texas A&M baseball team is off to one of its best starts in team history, and they are getting it done in multiple ways. However, outside of the improved pitching, the lineup is full of hitters. Braden Montgomery and Jace LaViolette are probably the best 1-2 punch in the league, and Gavin Grahovac makes his case every game to be named a Freshman All-American by the end of the season.

While the pitching has cooled off since conference play started, coaches Jim Schlossnagle and Max Weiner have used the same starting pitchers for each series, and it’s worked out well overall. Left-handed starting pitcher Ryan Prager has been one of the more consistent starters, boasting a 5-0 record with a 2.21 ERA and 51 strikeouts.

When the Aggies need a closer, they know they can trust Evan Aschenbeck’s arm. He has a 0.94 ERA, a 4-0 record, three saves, and 35 strikeouts. Below are the Aggies who were named to the Perfect Game All-American teams.

Outfielder Braden Montgomery – 1st Team

Pitcher Evan Aschenbeck – 1st Team

Outfielder Jace LaViolette – 2nd Team

Pitcher Ryan Prager – 3rd Team

Third Base Gavin Grahovac – Freshman Team

Congratulations to all of the Aggies who have been recognized to Perfect Games All-American teams.

The Aggie trio of Grahovac, Montgomery, and LaViolette are as good as advertised

Texas A&M has three of the best hitters in the nation and they are starting to heat back up

Before the season started, one thing was apparent to the college baseball world: Texas A&M has a stable of potential All-Americans. Braden Montgomery and Jace LaViolette were preseason All-Americans and true freshman Gavin Grahovac was named D1baseball’s preseason SEC Freshman of the Year. With the help of these three, the Aggies are one of the hottest teams in the nation right now.

Grahovac has solidified the third base spot and has been a productive leadoff hitter. He’s been playing like a seasoned veteran all year, and deciding to come to Texas A&M instead of going pro is paying significant dividends for Jim Schlossnagle.

Outfielders Montgomery and LaViolette have been trading the team home lead, with Mongomery holding a 15 to 13 advantage that’s good enough for the 2nd and 3rd spots in the SEC. Mongomery leads the conference with 45 RBI, Grahovac is number eight with 33, and LaViolette comes in at ten spot with 32.

A&M arguably has the best 1-2-3 batting lineup in the country and can give any pitcher fits while on the mound.

Texas A&M will wrap up the three-game series in College Station on Sunday at 2 p.m. CST.

Post game: No. 4 Texas A&M outlast Auburn in a 9-7 series opening win

Texas A&M takes game one fending off each Auburn rally for a Thursday night victory

No. 4 Texas A&M (23-3, 4-3 SEC) defeats Auburn (16-9, 1-6 SEC) 9-7 in College Station on Thursday night.

Aggies star switch-hitter Braden Montgomery got the party started early with a two-run home run in the first inning for an early 2-0 for his 13th of the year.  Later in the third inning, a Jaxon Appel sac fly scored Jace LaViolette, extending the lead to 3-0. Auburn had only mustered one hit to this point, and it looked like A&M might have started to pull away. Then, at the top of the fourth, Auburn tied the game with a three-run shot over the left field wall.

With the game tied at three apiece, A&M answered back when Hayden Schott hit a solo home run to retake the lead. Two walks and two singles later, the Aggies were back on top 6-3. A scoreless fifth-inning Auburn tied the game again, but it was short-lived once Texas A&M returned to the plate.

However, the scores came off free passes. They scored three runs without recording a hit. Two scores came from a bases-loaded hit by pitch followed by a bases-loaded walk. The final run was Schott’s sac fly, which brought Montgomery across the plate.

The Tigers would put another run on the board, but it wouldn’t matter as star Aggies’ closer Evan Aschenbeck closed the door on Auburn in the top of the ninth inning. Sitting at 9-7 with two out, Aschenbeck struck out the final batter to move the Aggies to 23-3 on the year with an open win in the series.

  • Total offense:  10 hits, 9 runs
  • Pitching: Evan Aschenbeck W (4-0): 4.0 innings, 5 Ks, 61 pitches. Ryan Prager: 4.1 innings, 2 Ks, 72 pitches. Chris Cortez: 0.2 innings, 1 Ks, 23 pitches. Josh Stewart: 0.0 innings, 0 Ks, 7 pitches.

Texas A&M will be back in action against Auburn in game two of the series at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park on March 29 at 6 p.m.

No. 6 Texas A&M baseball team’s offense stalls in Game 2 loss against Mississippi State

The Aggies suffered their first home loss following a 5-1 defeat. The Bulldogs tallied 5 runs in the fifth, 3 of which came off one swing.

While the Texas A&M men’s and women’s basketball teams respectively battled Nebraska in the NCAA Tournament on Friday, the baseball team dealt with its own version of March Madness as its offense stalled in a loss against Mississippi State.

The No. 6 Aggies (20-3, 2-3) suffered their first home loss of the season following a 5-1 defeat against the Bulldogs (17-7, 3-2) at Blue Bell Park. Mississippi State tallied 5 runs in the fifth frame, with 3 of them coming off one swing from junior first baseman Hunter Hines.

Texas A&M scored its lone run in the second inning on an RBI single by junior shortstop Ali Camarillo, who was the only Aggie to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Freshman third baseman Gavin Grahovac has now reached base safely in 12 consecutive contests and has at least 1 hit in 8 straight games.

Junior right-handed pitcher Tanner Jones (1-1) took the loss after pitching the first 4.0 innings and allowing 5 hits, 2 runs, 2 hit by pitch and 1 walk with 2 strikeouts on 72 pitches.

Texas A&M hosts the Bulldogs for a rubber match at Olsen Field on Saturday at 2 p.m. CST.

Texas A&M underclassmen Gavin Grahovac & Ryan Prager recap Game 1 win vs. Mississippi State

“All these (SEC) guys are big and physical. It’s been fun, we have a great group of guys and are going to continue to compete every day.”

The No. 6 Texas A&M baseball team beat Mississippi State 6-3 on Thursday at Blue Bell Park

Sophomore redshirt left-handed pitcher Ryan Prager bounced back from a tough start last Friday at Florida to start SEC play.

“It’s always good to get to play again. The problem with being a starting pitcher is you have to wait a week,” Prager explained. “I’m just really excited that we got the game in tonight and are starting to stick with our plan. Last week, it’s not like anything went terribly wrong, we just got hit around. That’s going to happen, it just happened to be the first one and it all came together. We just stuck to our plan and saw everything work the first four weeks and again tonight.”

Freshman third baseman Gavin Grahovac has adjusted quickly to playing SEC baseball, crushing two homers to begin the Bulldogs series.

“It’s been fun, man. All these (SEC) guys are big and physical. Everyone throws hard and hits. It’s been fun, we have a great group of guys and are going to continue to compete every day,” Grahovac said. “Both (homers), I’m just happy they got out. Did something for the team, was able to get runs going, so we all played great tonight.”
