‘We played bad for 2 days’: Jim Schlossnagle reflects on how No. 2 Texas A&M avoided SEC sweep at LSU

“We played bad for two days. You deserved to get your rear end kicked when you don’t play well. Our guys care too much sometimes,” he said.

The No. 2 Texas A&M baseball team avoided an SEC sweep at reigning national champion LSU this past weekend with a 14-4 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Aggies coach Jim Schlossnagle chatted with TexAgs on Monday and reflected on the series loss.

“We played bad for two days. You deserved to get your rear end kicked when you don’t play well. Our guys care too much sometimes. If you have that level of care, it can snowball, especially in the sport of baseball,” Schlossnagle explained. “I think we have played poorly and pitched poorly before. We just swung the bat enough to cover it up. We had full control of the game with Ryan Prager pitching. He walked two guys. They bunt. They got a little flare that is just out of Ali Camarillo’s reach. Tommy White was up. This was the double play that we wanted, and a bad throw was made.

“You have to give credit to the team we faced. Gage Jump and Luke Holman are two of the best starters we will see all year. The numbers don’t accurately reflect those to guys. Griffin Herring is awesome. We knew going into the weekend their left-handed pitching would be an issue for us.

“I thought Chris Cortez gave us a shot of life. We had Caden Sorrell’s triple. That got everyone fired up and then the Gavin Grahovac homer. Baseball can eat you up. You can feel the greatest for a while. A couple of negative things happen, and you have to be careful not to let it steamroll… Thought it was great when we battled back. We needed it. Three to four innings in on Sunday, it was not a good feeling in the dugout.

“I don’t like postgame talks or speeches, but that was mine on Saturday night. ‘Just chill out.’ The game ended, and we had one of the best pitchers in the country hanging his body over the front rail of the dugout like the season was over.

“We will not be perfect. They are human beings. We have to find ways to overcome it. There will be days we do. Those two days, we didn’t.”

Texas A&M baseball takes a dive in the newest USA TODAY Coaches Poll

After dropping two out of three games against LSU over the weekend Texas A&M falls a spot in the new USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Down goes number one. The Texas A&M (40-8, 16-8 SEC) baseball team struggled at the plate over the weekend causing them to drop their first SEC series loss since the opening week of league play. The defense was a little off and they did see a ball in the dirt they didn’t want to swing at through the first two games.

However, they did avoid the sweep with a dominant win on Sunday beating LSU 14-4, and Chris Cortez threw one of his better games of the season. SEC road games are hard, and baseball can be a game of slumps at times. Jim Schlossnagle knows this and will have his team prepared for the next series once they complete their midweek game.

Texas A&M avoids the sweep with a 14-4 victory in Game 3 over LSU

Texas A&M rallies in the top of the fifth to take a lead and hold to win game three over LSU

Texas A&M (40-8, 16-8 SEC) had a rough weekend in Baton Rouge but salvaged the series with a big fifth-inning rally for an important 10-run win over LSU (31-18, 9-15 SEC).

Over the past three games, including the third game of the Georgia series, the Aggies have been grappling with strikeouts, a recurring issue this season. However, as the game of baseball often proves, streaks happen. On Sunday, the Aggies found their rhythm, putting 14 runs on the board despite Jace LaViolette and Braden Montgomery going 1 for 10. This unpredictability is what makes baseball such a fascinating sport.

After falling 3-0 early, the Aggies stormed back, and freshman Caden Sorrell got the ball rolling by triple to center field in the top of the fifth. Travis Chestnut’s single brought Sorrell home to cut the lead, and Gavin Grahovac homered a few batters later to take a 4-3 lead. Jackson Appel got in on the home run party with a two-run shot and a bases-loaded walk followed by a few singles capped off a nine-run inning.

Notably, Kaeden Kent and LaViolette contributed five runs with their impressive home runs in the top of the ninth, leading the team to a commanding 14-3 lead. Let’s not forget the stellar performance of Chris Cortez, who put in the work, earning the win while allowing only one hit and striking out six.

Despite losing their No. 1 ranking, the Aggies’ performance in game three was a testament to the offensive and defensive prowess in 4.1 innings we’ve appreciated over the past few months. Texas A&M will return to Blue Bell Park to face Rice on Tuesday, May 7, at 6:00 p.m. CT. The game will air on SEC Network+.

No. 1 Texas A&M baseball team blows early 3-run lead to lose another SEC game at LSU

First pitch was delayed due to lightning and the Aggies’ (39-8) bats came out with thunder, scoring 3 runs in the top of the first inning.

Following a 32-minute weather delay on Saturday night in the Bayou, the Texas A&M baseball team attempted to tie its three-game SEC series at reigning national champion LSU.

With 11,751 fans in attendance, the first pitch at Alex Box Field was pushed back due to lightning in Baton Rouge. The Aggies‘ (39-8, 15-8 SEC) bats came out with some thunder, scoring 3 runs in the top of the first inning.

However, Texas A&M allowed 5 unanswered runs to the Tigers (31-17, 9-14) and ultimately lost 6-4 for the second straight evening. The Aggies scored their other run in the ninth frame. LSU tallied 3 in the third, 1 in the seventh and 2 in the eighth.

Freshmen, third baseman Gavin Grahovac & outfielder Caden Sorrell, sophomore OF Jace LaViolette, junior shortstop Ali Camarillo and senior pinch hitter Ted Burton each contributed a hit. Camarillo, LaViolette, Sorrell and senior catcher Jackson Appel respectively recorded 1 run batted in.

The series finale at Skip Bertman Field is Sunday at 1 p.m.

Texas A&M baseball stays perfect in midweek games with a 10-6 victory over Tarleton

The Aggies check off a milestone as they remain undefeated in non-conference play with a 10-6 victory over Tarleton

As we learned in the Georgia series, no early lead is safe when the Texas A&M (39-6, 15-6 SEC) bats get hot. After falling 4-1 in the early few frames, the Aggies made a run in the fourth inning ending in a 10-6 win over Tarleton.

After the Texans jumped out to a 2-0 lead the hottest bat in Aggieland, Ted Burton, hit his fifth home run in the last 4 games to cut the lead in half. Tarlton followed that up with two more runs until Jace LaViolette hit a three-run shot to tie the game with his 23rd home run of the season.

The fourth saw the Aggies jump ahead with an Ali Camarillo solo home run and a Jackson Appel single that scored Travis Chestnut. Kaeden Kent, who stepped in for Gavin Grahovac added some important insurance runs with a three-run double to go up by 9-4. The final A&M run came via a balk in the bottom from the Tarleton pitcher.

Jim Schlossnagle was able to get a lot of pitchers some work with Brad Rudis getting the win and strong outings from Kaiden Wilson and Josh Stewart. The big milestone of the night was the Aggies crossing the 100-homerun mark for only the 2nd time in program history.

Texas A&M will face LSU in a three-game series in Baton Rouge starting on Friday, May 3, at 7:00 p.m. CST, where the game will air on SEC Network+.

Texas A&M baseball remains No. 1 in the newest USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Texas A&M see no change in the rankings as they stay No. 1 after a 3-1 week and another Top 25 SEC series win

Texas A&M (38-6, 15-6 SEC) holds the title of King of the Mountain as they tally another midweek win coupled with a Top 25 SEC series win on Georgia. They started the week by outlasting a competitive Houston team in a 13-11 win. Then, after beating Georgia in game one, they had an epic comeback victory in game two to seal another SEC series in their favor.

The Aggie continues to look like the team to beat in a three-game series, and so far, the only team to do it has been the Florida Gators in the opening SEC series. Since that series, they haven’t dropped another once since climbing their way to the top spot.

Update: Texas A&M freshman star Gavin Grahovac receives good news on injury

Gavin Grahovac’s MRI comes back clean and he should be ready for the LSU series this weekend

In a worrisome site in game three of the Georgia series, Texas A&M freshman third baseman Gavin Grahovac appeared to injure his leg falling to the ground and grabbing his knee while running to first base. It was enough of an issue that he was eventually taken out for the rest of the game. Coming off back-to-back SEC Freshman of the Week honors, Grahovac has settled in well and the only thing that seemed to be able to cool him off would be an injury.

However, he received some promising news reported by Ryan Brauninger of TexAgs that his MRI came back clean. So, with some rest and no structural damage to his knee, he should be able to be back on the diamond for the LSU series this weekend. This is the best news for the young player as he’s been a star on both sides of the ball and will get to continue his freshman campaign.

Texas A&M senior second baseman Ted Burton reflects on victory vs. No. 17 Georgia to start SEC series

“I actually got up a little concerned that I tore something,” Burton recalled. “I was glad that I was able to stretch out for my teammates.”

On Friday evening at Blue Bell Park, the No. 1 Texas A&M baseball team was able to earn a 5-2 SEC win versus No. 17 Georgia thanks to winning plays, like a defensive web gem from senior second baseman Ted Burton.

“I actually got up a little concerned that I tore something. It was a good spot to do it and I was glad that I was able to stretch out for my teammates,” Burton explained. “I’ve gotta give credit to our training staff. I’m with them everyday and they just put so much energy into us. All credit to them making for us feel our best.

“That’s what make this team great is a lot of the time it’s Jace, Braden and Gavin, even Jackson Appel, they’re just unbelievable. Just one through nine,  you never know who is going to play the best and who is going to be player of the game, so that makes it special.”

SEC names freshman Gavin Grahovac to as Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week

Texas A&M freshman third baseman Gavin Grahovac was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after a strong series against Alabama

Texas A&M freshman Gavin Grahovac has taken charge of the starting third base position and is one of the better lead-off hitters in all of college baseball. He currently sits in the top ten in the SEC for the following categories: No. 3 runs scored (56), No. 7 hits (56), No. 11 doubles (12), No. 12 home runs (14) and No. 5 RBI (49).

The SEC recognized the freshman’s production after the big week by naming him SEC Freshman Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. Below is the excerpt from the release from the SEC officials:

Texas A&M’s Gavin Grahovac registered a .350/.409/.550 slash line to go along with a homer, seven RBI and seven runs scored to help the Aggies to a 3-1 record last week. In the series win at No. 12 Alabama, Grahovac was 6-for-16 with a double and home run. Six of the freshman’s seven RBI last week came in the series win against the Crimson Tide.

Texas A&M baseball remains the top dog in the new USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Texas A&M was two runs shy of the sweep over Alabama last weekend, but they keep the top spot after a 3-1 week.

Texas A&M (35-5, 13-5 SEC) is an offensive juggernaut and did something that’s hard to do in SEC play, and that’s going on the road and win a series against a top-25 conference opponent. The Aggie baseball team started the week run-ruling Air Force 15-5 in a tune-up before they headed to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama which just knocked off the No. 1 team the weekend before.

Alabama showed why they are a dangerous team to face putting some pressure on the Aggies in the first two games, but the firepower of the Maroon and White was just too much to overcome. They outscored the Tide 28-14 through those two games to claim their fifth straight conference series win.

There was no doubt after Saturday afternoon that A&M would stay the No.1 team in the country. Even though Alabama did take game three in a 10-9 win the Aggies racked up 52 runs through four games with one run-rule victory during that span. Things are still looking good for A&M, but there is a lot of base left to be played and this sport can be very unforgiving at times.
