Rutgers football: Five players that shined during 2023 campaign

During the 2023 season, the Scarlet Knights showed a lot of encouraging signs as they earned their first bowl game in almost ten years.

During the 2023 season, the Scarlet Knights showed a lot of encouraging signs as they earned their first bowl game in almost ten years. The defense continued to be a strength and the offense showed progress. While their success was a team effort, five players in particular were vital to Rutgers success.

As Rutgers football finished the regular season with a 6-6 record, the talented trio of Kyle Monangai, Gavin Wimsatt and Christian Dremel led the way offensively. Monangai turned into the Big Ten’s leading rusher while Dremel became Rutgers’ most reliable receiver.

On the defensive side, Rutgers did not make life easy for opponents. They were led by Mohamed Toure and Deion Jennings. The talented duo added 169 total tackles to their resume and did not miss a game.

Although Rutgers improvement was due to many pieces, the talented group of Monangai, Wimsatt, Dremel, Toure and Jennings took their play to another level and created excitement for the future.

Rutgers set to face Georgetown in Gavitt Games

Rutgers basketball faces a big game on Wednesday against Georgetown.

On Wednesday night, Rutgers basketball will be looking to extend their winning streak to three games when they welcome Georgetown to Jersey Mike’s Arena. After losing to Princeton on opening night, Rutgers has recorded victories against Boston University and Bryant. However, they will be facing a Georgetown team eager to prove themselves.

Through two games, the Hoyas have posted a 1-1 record and struggled at times defensively. They will be tasked with stopping Rutgers stars Clifford Omuruyi and Aundre Hyatt, who are off to impressive starts. This game also has special meaning as it marks the beginning of the Gavitt Games.

Georgetown’s head coach, Ed Cooley, has been part of the Gavitt Game five times during his career and posted a 2-3 record. His only wins came over Wisconsin in 2021 and Illinois in 2015. As Cooley looks to add another Gavitt win to his resume, Georgetown will look to build on their past success against Rutgers.

In the all-time series, Georgetown holds a 29-16 edge. The Hoyas have also won 12 of the last 13 matchups between these two programs. However, this Rutgers team is eager to change the narrative.

So far this season, Rutgers is 2-0 at home and they are favored heading into this matchup. If the Scarlet Knights matchup continues to produce, it could be a long night for Georgetown.

Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz isn’t surprised that Greg Schiano has rebuilt Rutgers football

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz isn’t surprised by the Rutgers football rebuild.

After years of frustration, Rutgers football has seemingly turned a corner in what has been a dramatic, and at times long, rebuilding process under head coach Greg Schiano.

Through the first 10 weeks of the college football season, they have posted a 6-3 (3-3 Big Ten) record and won three conference games. Rutgers is bowl-eligible for the first time since 2014.

While many in the college football world have taken notice, Iowa’s head coach Kirk Ferentz highlighted their success in his press conference on November 7. Rutgers will play at Iowa (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten) on Saturday at 3:30 PM ET (Big Ten Network)

“They were a team trying to find their footing last year; now they have their footing, and they’re playing outstanding football,” Ferentz told reporters this week.

“It’s not a big surprise. Coach Schiano did a great job of building the program back in the early 2000s, putting them in a state of prominence if you will.”

As Rutgers has returned to prominence, players such as quarterback Gavin Wimsatt and running back Kyle Monangai have taken their games to another level under Schiano. The defense, which has always been a strength, has continued to improve. What has impressed Frentz is how Rutgers is playing as a whole.

“They have a good football team. One of the top running backs in the Big Ten,” Ferentz said.

“Big, physical offensive line. Receivers that will block. Veteran guys all three guys are veterans. Quarterback is playing really well for them. Tight end is a dangerous player. They’re playing good team defense.”

On Saturday afternoon, Iowa will take on a Rutgers team searching for redemption. They are coming off a loss to No. 1 Ohio State. This week, Iowa checked in at No. 22 in the recently released College Football Playoff rankings.

Mike Teel: You can see Kirk Ciarrocca’s impact on the Rutgers offense and Gavin Wimsatt

Mike Teel sees significant improvement from the Rutgers offense this season.

It is a season for Rutgers football that not many on the outside envisioned. But with bowl eligibility clinched, it is obvious that Rutgers is obviously building and trending in the right direction.

And count Mike Teel among those who see the maturation and development of the program, in particular on the offensive side of the ball.

A season ago, Rutgers was squarely bottom two in the Big Ten in nearly every significant offensive category. Now, Rutgers is middle of the pack in those same categories.

And a 6-2 start to the season is a testament to offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca’s work on the offensive side of the ball. A unit that remains largely unchanged from a year ago in terms of personnel has looked very much changed in becoming a competent and functioning group.

“Rutgers has been able to play complementary football so far this year. As far as the offense goes, I think that they’ve made huge strides from where they were last year,” Teel told Rutgers Wire this week.

“They obviously still have a long way to go, but for the first time in a while, they have an identity. They are going to run the football. Teams have filled the box to stop the run, but they stick to it and have eventually worn teams down. The passing game is a work in progress. There have been some bright spots and as a lot of these young players continue to play, I think it’ll only get better.”

Teel now serves as a radio analyst for Rutgers football. He certainly knows a thing or two about what a good offense looks like at Rutgers.

The best quarterback in the history of the program, Teel was the quarterback of a Scarlet Knights offense in 2007 that featured dual 1,000-yard wide receivers in Kenny Britt and Tiquan Underwood.

During that season, Teel completed 58 percent of his passes for 3,147 yards with 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

As for this current quarterback, Gavin Wimsatt has steadily grown and progressed.

The Rutgers quarterback is completing 50.2 percent of his passes and has seven touchdowns. Both are on pace for career-bests.

He only has four interceptions on the season after seven last year (and just five touchdowns). He has 362 rushing yards, nearly triple his first two years combined.

And Wimsatt’s seven rushing touchdowns account for all the rushing touchdowns of his college career. Impressive uptick from Wimsatt this season to say the least.

“He obviously has a game plan in his mind and for the most part has taken care of the football. He’s done a nice job of when to either throw it away or tuck it and run it,” Teel said.

“At times, it looks like the game is moving really fast for him and then other times, it looks like it’s slowed down. That’s kind of expected from any young player. The influence of Kirk is obvious though and he’s definitely made strides to be a better player this year.”
