3 Cardinals rookies make their debut vs. Seahawks

Garrett Williams, Elijah Higgins and Clayton all made their NFL debut in Week 7 against the Seahawks.

The Arizona Cardinals lost on Sunday 20-10 on the road to the Seattle Seahawks. In the loss, rookie cornerback Garrett Williams made his NFL debut, playing for the first time since he tore his ACL in college last October.

He played pretty well.

However, he wasn’t the only Cardinals rookie to make his NFL debut.

Quarterback Clayton Tune and tight end Elijah Higgins also played in the NFL for the first time.

Williams finished with two tackles, an interception, which also counts as a pass breakup.

Tune played only one snap. It was a fake punt on special teams. He completed a four-yard pass. It was fourth-and-nine, so it was not successful.

Higgins was active for the first time this season and got to play on offense and special teams.

He logged seven special teams snaps and six on offense. He had his first NFL reception, although it was for zero yards.

Cardinals activate S Budda Baker, CB Garrett Williams for game vs. Seahawks

Baker missed the last five games with a hamstring injury. Williams will make his NFL debut.

The Arizona Cardinals get reinforcements in the secondary for their Week 7 matchup on the road against the Seattle Seahawks. They announced some roster moves Saturday and have activated safety Budda Baker from injured reserve and rookie cornerback Garrett Williams from the non-football injury reserve.

Both are expected to play on Sunday. Because the Cardinals released running back Tony Jones and linebacker Myjai Sanders, they already had two roster vacancies. As such, they did not need to release anyone.

Baker missed five games after injuring his hamstring in Week 1. He spent four game on injured reserve. He said earlier in the week that it was expected to be a six-week injury but he worked to cut that down. His return is timely, as fellow safety Jalen Thompson will miss his second straight game with a hamstring injury.

Williams will make his NFL debut. He tore his ACL while playing collegiately for Syracuse last October. The Cardinals drafted him in the third round this year.

He could get to play right away. Antonio Hamilton is out with a groin injury so Williams could either be the third cornerback after Marco Wilson and Kei’Trel Clark, who is also questionable with a hamstring injury, or he could be the fourth corner in the rotation after Starling Thomas.

OL Dennis Daley, CB Garrett Williams designated to return, begin practicing

The Cardinals are getting reinforcements in practice this week. They have 21 days to be restored to the active roster.

The Arizona Cardinals get two players back to practice they have not had yet this season. They announced they designated rookie cornerback Garrett Williams and offensive lineman Dennis Daley to return to practice.

Williams is on the NFI (non-football injury) reserve and Daley is on injured reserve.

Both now are eligible to practice and can be activated to the 53-man roster at any point in the next 21 days.

The Cardinals released two cornerbacks and an offensive lineman on Monday, so it would appear that both will be activated this weekend and dress and potentially dress and play on Sunday when the Cardinals host the Cincinnati Bengals.

Williams was on NFI recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last October while in college. He was drafted by the Cardinals in the third round out of Syracuse.

Daley injured his ankle in the preseason finale.

The Cardinals did not designate outside linebacker Myjai Sanders or quarterback Kyler Murray to return. Sanders is on IR with a hand injury and Murray is on the PUP (physically unable to perform) reserve completing his recovery from his torn ACL last season.

If Daley or Williams is not activated to the 53-man roster within 21 days, they revert to the reserves they were on and must miss the remainder of the season.

Jonathan Gannon gives update about rookie CB Garrett Williams

Williams is making progress but Gannon isn’t giving a timeline for his NFL debut.

Cornerback Garrett Williams has become a bit of a forgotten man this season. A third-round pick by the Cardinals out of Syracuse, he has been out since he was drafted recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last October.

He has been on the non-football injury list and it is possible for him to be designated to return as soon as next week.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon gave an update about the rookie cornerback, although he did not give clear timetable for his NFL debut.

“We’ll see,” he said Wednesday. “We’ve got to make that decision collectively with all our guys, like I said, but he is doing a really good job. He has advanced some things that he needs to be able to do. I think that in the last couple of weeks here I like where he is trending, but that’s a case-by-case and day-by-day basis. We’ll make those decisions when we need to, but I like where he is trending right now.”

Once Williams is designated to return, it opens a 21-day window in which he can practice and can be restored to the active roster. He would revert to NFI if not activated and would be ineligible to play the rest of the season.

Rookie CB Garrett Williams to start season on NFI

Williams, drafted in the third round, is coming off a torn ACL he suffered during his final season of college, will have to miss at least four games before he can practice.

The Arizona Cardinals selected cornerback Garrett Williams in the third round of the 2023 draft. He was coming back from a torn ACL he suffered during his final season at Syracuse.

While he believed he would be ready to practice in August, that did not happen and he has been on the non-football injury list (it was an injury sustained away from the team), making him ineligible to play.

He is not ready yet to play. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said he will start the season as he has been.

“He’s doing well,” he told reporters Monday. “He’s going to start on NFI, I think.”

Gannon said Williams has “responded well” to having a lot given to him while he is still unable to practice.

Starting the season on NFI means that a player must miss at least four games before he can even practice.

The Cardinals have a plan for his rehab and for his return. So far, things are going well.

Zach Ertz, BJ Ojulari to PUP; Garrett Williams to NFI to start training camp

The Cardinals made some roster designations on Wednesday to start training camp.

The Arizona Cardinals announced some roster designations on Wednesday that affect the ability of some players to be able to practice in training camp.

As expected, quarterback Kyler Murray was placed on PUP (physically unable to perform) as he recovers from a torn ACL.

Two other players with knee injuries will also begin camp on PUP.

Tight end Zach Ertz, also recovering from a torn ACL, and rookie linebacker BJ Ojulari (knee) were also placed on PUP, making them ineligible to practice for now.

Ojulai missed time in the offseason program, although head coach Jonathan Gannon downplayed the injury, saying it wasn’t serious. However, because he is on PUP, it means it was not a preexisting knee injury. He got hurt with the team while participating in the offseason program.

All three players are able to come off PUP at any time before the season, at which time they will be able to practice again. Starting them there ensures the possibility of being on the regular-season PUP. Once removed from PUP, a player cannot go back on.

In addition to the moves to PUP, rookie cornerback Garrett Williams was placed on NFI (non-football injury list). He suffered a torn ACL last season while playing in college. The injury did not happen while with the Cardinals in the NFL, so it uses a different designation. He can come off at any time as well.

Williams said he hoped be clear for football activities in August.

Draft reaction: Arizona Cardinals select CB Garrett Williams No. 72 overall

Draft reaction: Arizona Cardinals select Syracuse CB Garrett Williams in the third round

The Arizona Cardinals continue to rebuild their secondary with a defensive back who can help bolster their corner room with the selection of Syracuse’ Garrett Williams.

An athletic stud with ideal length for the position, Williams saw action in all his three seasons with the Orange with mixed results. During his final season however, Williams saw a jump in production, and while not a shut down corner, showed he can develop and grow with time. In his final season with Syracuse Williams surrendered a passer rating of just 84.1 as well as nabbing two interceptions on the year.

Williams could very well see action right away behind a shaky set a players in front of him, and with an impressive showing in camp could leap the depth chart right away to open the season as an outside corner. While he will have growing pains as a rookie, his length and progression make him a candidate to be apart of the future in the Arizona secondary.

Contract details for Cardinals 3rd-round pick CB Garrett Williams

Williams’ four-year rookie deal is worth a total of $5.63 million.

The Arizona Cardinals have signed eight of their nine player selections from the 2023 NFL draft. The most recent player to sign was cornerback Garrett Williams, selected with the 72nd overall pick in the draft.

The six players on the Cardinals drafted after Williams all have the league minimum salary each year of their deal.

Williams does not.

His rookie contract is for four years and worth a total of $5.63 million, according to Over the Cap.

He receives a signing bonus of $1.10 million.

These are his salaries for the four years.

  • 2023: $750,000
  • 2024: $1.01 million
  • 2025: $1.26 million
  • 2026: $1.52 million

He makes the league minimum in 2023 but also was paid his signing bonus.

Salary cap implications

Williams’ cap hit each year is the total of his salary plus a prorated position of his signing bonus.

These are his cap hits each year.

  • 2023: $1.02 million
  • 2024: $1.28 million
  • 2025: $1.54 million
  • 2026: $1.79 million

Cardinals down to 1 unsigned draft pick after inking CB Garrett Williams

Williams is the eighth of the Cardinals’ nine draft picks to sign their rookie deals.

The Arizona Cardinals are down to only one of their nine draft picks needing to be signed. The latest to sign his rookie contract is cornerback Garrett Williams, whom the Cardinals selected in the third round of the NFL draft last month out of Syracuse.

Williams was pick No. 72 in the draft.

The only remaining unsigned draft pick is linebacker B.J. Ojulari, Arizona’s second-round pick.

Williams’ deal is for four years.

Williams is coming off an injury-shortened year in 2022. He tore his ACL in October and will miss offseason work but should be ready to go in July.

Based on how quickly the other draft picks signed their contracts, perhaps the Cardinals can get Ojulari under contract before the start of voluntary OTAs (organized team activities) next week.
