Garrett Jackson to coach Rockets at NBA’s 2024 summer league

Rockets assistant Garrett Jackson, not Ben Sullivan, will be Houston’s head coach in July at the NBA’s 2024 summer league.

Garrett Jackson, an assistant coach on the staff of Ime Udoka in Houston, will serve as head coach when the Rockets participate in the NBA’s 2024 summer league next month. The league’s annual summer showcase will take place from July 12-22 in Las Vegas, with mini-camps held in each home city in the days prior to those games.

Game dates and times for the 30-team event have yet to be released.

Jackson made the announcement as part of a new interview with Vanessa Richardson, courtside reporter for Space City Home Network (Houston’s regional television broadcast partner).

Among Jackson’s comments to Richardson:

We’re doing a lot of group workouts right now. Our other development coaches and staff have done a good job of putting together a plan for each of our guys, so we’re just following through on it, this summer.

Also, I’m coaching summer league. So, we’re looking to have some carryover from the summer workouts — bring it over to Vegas — and improve it.

It’s about continuing to build relationships with the guys. It’s just about getting out there, growing, and pushing our guys… and myself.

More commentary from Jackson’s interview can be viewed below, and the complete interview can be viewed on SCHN’s latest Rockets All Access program (which debuts Wednesday at 6 p.m. Central).

Jackson, 32, was first hired by Udoka as part of Boston’s player enhancement staff in September 2021. Before that, he worked in the video department of the San Antonio Spurs and legendary head coach Gregg Popovich starting in 2019 — when Udoka was there.

Jackson played college basketball with USC and Saint Mary’s before a brief professional career with international clubs. From 2015 to 2018, he played for North-West Tasmania Thunder, Melbourne United, Sydney Kings, Dandenong Rangers, and TG s.Oliver Wurzburg.

As for Jackson’s summer-league roster in Las Vegas, that remains to be seen. Any rookies selected in the 2024 NBA draft are likely candidates to be included, as are a handful of undrafted free agent prospects; players from Houston’s NBA G League affiliate (the Rio Grande Valley Vipers); and recent two-way contract players such as Nate Hinton, Jermaine Samuels Jr. and Nate Williams.

It’s worth noting that then-sophomores Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason played in two of six summer-league games in 2024. With that in mind, it’s at least plausible that current second-year players Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore could briefly play this year.

Houston’s 2023 summer-league team finished in second place after a 5-1 stint and a loss to Cleveland in the 2023 championship game. That team was coached by Ben Sullivan, who remains on Udoka’s staff.

Updated 2023-2024 Houston Rockets roster, salaries after free agency

After an extremely busy 2023 free agency, here’s an updated look at the #Rockets roster and salaries entering the 2023-24 NBA season.

When we last saw the Houston Rockets play a regular-season game in April, they were one of the NBA’s youngest teams and directed by a relatively unproven head coach in Stephen Silas.

The situation has changed significantly in the months since. Ime Udoka replaced Silas as head coach and brought in his own staff of assistants, while general manager Rafael Stone spent more than $60 million in 2023 free agency to sign veteran players Fred VanVleet, Dillon Brooks, Jeff Green and Jock Landale.

Those veterans will surround Houston’s young core of Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, Kevin Porter Jr., Jabari Smith Jr., Tari Eason and newly drafted 2023 rookies Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore.

As of early August, here’s an updated look at where things stand with the Rockets’ coaching staff and roster of players entering the 2023-24 NBA season. Many of the team’s newcomers will not have their jersey numbers revealed until closer to training camp, which is scheduled to start in early October.

Height and weight information is from NBA.com, while salary details are from HoopsHype figures. Ages are as of Aug. 1, 2023.

On Monday, Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka announced his staff for the 2023-24 NBA season. Joining the team as assistant coaches are Ben Sullivan, Royal Ivey, Garrett Jackson, Tiago Splitter, Cam Hodges and Mike Moser.

Sullivan was an assistant coach with Boston the past two seasons, including on Udoka’s staff in 2021-22. Prior to joining the Celtics, Sullivan spent seven seasons as an assistant on Mike Budenholzer’s staff in Atlanta and Milwaukee. He helped the Bucks win the championship in 2020-21. Sullivan began his NBA career as an assistant video coordinator with San Antonio after being recommended by Udoka, who was then an assistant with the Spurs.

Ivey joins the Rockets from Brooklyn, where he spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach, including alongside Udoka on Steve Nash’s staff in 2020-21. After finishing his 10-year NBA career, Ivey became an assistant coach for Oklahoma City’s G League affiliate, the Blue. He transitioned into an assistant coach role for the Thunder and was also an assistant coach with his hometown Knicks. Ivey completed his career at the University of Texas as the school’s all-time leader in starts.

Jackson spent the past two seasons as a player enhancement coach for Boston. The Portland native played overseas following his collegiate career at USC and Saint Mary’s. Jackson was a graduate manager for Hawaii men’s team in 2018-19 before taking an internship with the Spurs’ video department.

Splitter spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach with the Nets and worked alongside Udoka in 2020-21. Following a standout playing career in Spain, Splitter joined the Spurs in 2010-11 and started 18 playoff games during their championship run in 2013-14. He has been an assistant coach for the Brazilian national team and served as head coach of their under-23 squad.

Hodges was a coaching associate for the Los Angeles Clippers for the past three seasons after serving as player development coach for Philadelphia in 2019-20 when Udoka was an assistant. He also worked three seasons as a player development assistant for the Spurs. Hodges, who served eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve, played overseas before interning with the Erie Bayhawks in the G League.

Moser was a player enhancement coach for Boston last season after serving as an assistant coach for the Oregon Ducks women’s team in 2021-22. As a redshirt senior for Oregon, he earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention. Moser played overseas for several years with stops in Lithuania, Israel, Kosovo, Qatar, Finland and France.

Garrett Jackson among Boston assistants likely to re-join Ime Udoka in Houston

Garrett Jackson, who has worked as an NBA assistant with the Spurs and Celtics, is the latest Boston coach who appears set to re-join Ime Udoka in Houston. #Rockets

Add Garrett Jackson to a growing list of Celtics assistant coaches who appear poised to join their former boss, Ime Udoka, in Houston. Jackson’s inclusion was first reported Saturday by HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

Boston’s Ben Sullivan, Aaron Miles and Mike Moser were previously reported as likely candidates to join Udoka with the Rockets. No  announcement from the team has been made though Udoka said in a recent media availability that news could come soon.

Jackson, 31, was hired as part of Boston’s player enhancement staff in September 2021. Prior to that, he worked in the video department of the San Antonio Spurs and legendary head coach Gregg Popovich starting in 2019 — when Udoka was with that team.

Report: Celtics to hire Spurs staffer Garrett Jackson to Ime Udoka’s coaching staff

Boston continues to fill out their coaching staff with hires who have experience playing the game.

New Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka’s staff is coming further into focus with reports of San Antonio Spurs staffer Garrett Jackson being hired by Udoka to add yet another former player to his coaching staff. Jackson was playing overseas as recently as 2018, and per The Athletic’s Jared Weiss, recently finished an internship under recent Celtics hire Will Hardy on the Spurs.

Added to former Pacific head coach Damon Stoudamire and Hardy along with Aaron Miles, and it seems likely the new Boston head coach’s staff is close to or complete, with assistant Joe Mazzulla and video assistant Evan Bradds to stay on with the Celtics under Udoka.

With these hires in place, Udoka and his staff can begin to turn their focus on preparing for the season ahead, and establishing relationships with the players on the roster as well as consulting with the front office regarding potential draft targets and free agent signings.
