Texans LB Garret Wallow ‘rehabbing hard’ following ankle surgery

Houston Texans linebacker Garret Wallow is attacking his rehabilitation following his offseason ankle surgery.

Houston Texans linebacker Garret Wallow continues to rehabilitate from his ankle surgery he underwent shortly after the conclusion of the 2022 regular season.

Wallow was at the Boys & Girls Club — Havard Club in Houston along with defensive lineman Thomas Booker, Texans Cheerleaders, and TORO for Random Acts of Kindness Day and gave an update on his rehabilitation following what he described as a “clean up” procedure.

“Yeah, absolutely, just taking it day by day, rehabbing hard with the Texans training staff,” Wallow said via Aaron Wilson of KPRC-TV. “They know what they’re doing. So, just go in there and give 110% with them and try to get back full speed as quick as possible.”

Wallow finished with 13 combined tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup through 13 games, three of which he started. The former 2021 fifth-rounder from TCU played 124 defensive snaps compared to 185 special teams snaps.

The 6-2, 230-pounder is confident he will be ready for training camp, but isn’t so sure about the team’s offseason workouts, which begin in April.

“I’m not sure about offseason [workouts],” said Wallow. “I think the plan right now is to keep rehabbing, but see how fast I rehab and just making sure that I put my body in the best position to be back 100% and be back ready to go. Whatever that looks like, I say I put my trust in the training staff to get to that point.”

Texans LB Garret Wallow reveals where he has improved going into second year

Houston Texans linebacker Garret Wallow knows where he has made improvements to his game as he prepares for his second NFL season.

Garret Wallow has been talked about in the offseason.

Where it is general manager Nick Caserio, coach Lovie Smith, or his Houston Texans teammates, Wallow has gotten the endorsements throughout the spring.

The former TCU linebacker met with reporters after the eighth day of training camp practice at Houston Methodist Training Center and talked about where he has taken the next steps in development in 2022.

“I would just say, mentally on the field, just being a lot quicker, reading things a lot quicker and that comes with being in the system for a second year,” Wallow said.

The fifth-rounder has the advantage of playing in the same defensive scheme, albeit the Texans switched coaches with the dismissal of David Culley after one year and the promotion of Smith. However, the Texans are still running the same Tampa 2 scheme from 2021 that they are this season, regardless of Smith’s promotion from defensive coordinator to associate head coach.

Wallow has the same continuity among position coaches as he is in his second year working with Miles Smith as linebackers coach. The comprehension and application of the Texans’ defense is able to be built upon for Wallow, not torn down and reconstructed as what typically happens with the onboarding of a new coaching staff.

The 6-2, 230-pounder has also been working with Texans strength and conditioning coach Mike Eubanks in the offseason, taking full advantage of an NFL program.

“Physically, working with Mike all season and the whole strength staff has helped me change my body around and just help me get in better shape for year,” said Wallow.

The 23-year-old produced 23 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, a quarterback hit, and 1.0 sack through 17 games as a rookie, two of which he started. Even though Wallow is vying for more defensive snaps — 180 to 286 special teams snaps — he knows Kamu Grugier-Hill, Christian Kirksey, Neville Hewitt, and third-rounder Christian Harris won’t make it easy.

“There’s a lot of great guys in the room, great competition going on right now,” Wallow said. “The main thing is just coming in every day for everybody and just being consistent and just let everything take care of itself.”

Texans LB Christian Kirksey says Garret Wallow has taken a leap

Houston Texans linebacker Christian Kirksey says that second-year linebacker Garret Wallow has progressed in his development.

The Houston Texans’ five-man 2021 draft class was about acquiring talent that could provide competition at their respective positions.

With the Texans picking fifth-round linebacker Garret Wallow from TCU, Houston was looking for a defender who could meld well into then-defensive coordinator Lovie Smith’s Tampa 2 scheme.

With the Texans promoting Smith to coach in Feb. 2022, he isn’t the only one who has taken another step. According to linebacker Christian Kirksey, Wallow is also making strides in his development.

“Garret, that’s my guy,” Kirksey told reporters after the first day of training camp at Houston Methodist Training Center. “I call him ‘Gary’ just for fun. It’s a little inside joke. But he’s a high motor. He’s smart. He can play any of the three linebacker positions and he just has that high motor where he’s going to go make a play and he can go do it all day.”

Wallow generated 23 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, one quarterback hit, and 1.0 sack through 17 games, two of which he started. The former Horned Frog played 286 special teams snaps compared to 180 on defense.

That may change if Wallow’s progress can translate to the gridiron.

Said Kirksey: “You could see the leap from year one to year two in his confidence level. Also you could see what he’s been doing in the weight room and on the field, just how his body is transitioning. He’s put a lot of work in the offseason. So, I’m excited for him this year.

The Texans also drafted a linebacker in Round 3 of the 2022 NFL draft in Alabama’s Christian Harris. With the Texans trending towards a younger linebacking corps, Wallow may emerge as one of the leaders by example of the unit.

4 Texans poised for a breakout season in 2022

Here are four potential breakout candidates for the Houston Texans this season.

Every season provides an opportunity for unknown players to emerge from the shadows and make a name for themselves throughout the NFL season.

The Houston Texans have players with plenty of potential, but have yet to manifest it consistently throughout their burgeoning careers.

Here are four breakout candidates for the Texans in 2022 — players who have a chance to stake their claim as cornerstones on the roster throughout the rest of their rookie contracts.

Davis Mills is too easy of a candidate and won’t be included. If Houston is competitive and winning at least six games, Mills will have broken out in some measure.

Texans LB Garret Wallow becoming a fixture on special teams

Second-year linebacker Garret Wallow is becoming more of a key figure on special teams for the Houston Texans.

The Houston Texans’ five-man draft class from 2021 was a group of rookies picked specifically to foment competition at their positions.

Linebacker didn’t see as much competition as Kamu Grugier-Hill dominated with a team-high 108 combined tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and 3.0 sacks, but there was still long-term encouragement within the linebacking corps.

Fifth-rounder Garret Wallow played all 17 games for Houston, starting in two of them, and notched 23 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, a quarterback hit, and 1.0 sack.

Predominantly where Wallow saw his snaps were on special teams with 286 such snaps versus 180 on defense.

Special teams coordinator Frank Ross is using Wallow as an example for the 2022 rookie class of a young player who can blossom in the transition phase of the game.

“I tell the rookies that just finished their first spring, ‘That was Garret a year ago,'” Ross told reporters after mandatory minicamp at Houston Methodist Training Center. “I tell those guys, ‘We’re trying to get you to be a year three player in less than six months.'”

With Wallow seeking to take the next step, the former TCU product has become more involved as a leader on special teams.

Said Ross: “He’s done a great job. Guys like him have taken the reins as far as special teams, heavy core-four roles. He’s done a great job with that and excited to see where he comes into camp in shape, and gets ready to roll for his second full year.”

Texans LB Garret Wallow displaying veteran maturity entering second season

Houston Texans linebacker Garret Wallow is showing signs of a mature veteran as he enters his second season in the NFL.

The goal of the Houston Texans’ 2021 draft, which featured a small, five-man draft class with the first selection coming in Round 3, was to foment as much competition as possible.

The selection of TCU linebacker Garret Wallow with the No. 170 overall pick in Round 5 was to provide youth and competition to the linebacking corps.

According to linebacker Christian Kirksey, Wallow has been developing slowly throughout the offseason and has demonstrated a veteran understanding about the game.

“I mean, he’s only a year two, but he seems like he’s been in the league for five, six years,” Kirksey told reporters June 1 after organized team activities at Houston Methodist Training Center. “He’s very smart. He picks up the game fast. He plays fast. He can play any linebacker position on the field, whether it’s Mike, Will or Sam. He can plug himself in and be of impact on this defense, so I’m very proud to see where he’s came.”

Wallow started in two of his 17 games played for Houston as a rookie, collecting 23 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, a quarterback hit, and 1.0 sack. The 6-2, 230-pound linebacker predominantly saw his snaps on special teams with 286 compared to 180 on defense.

Kirksey, who played in 13 games for Houston in 2021, believes that Wallow will be able to capitalize on his rookie season.

“I thought he had an extremely good rookie year, came in there and made plays when his number was called, and this year he’s definitely taking those strides,” said Kirksey. “He’s definitely working. He showed me some of his off-season routines and workouts that he was doing, and just say that he was working his butt off, so, I can’t wait to see what’s in store for him this season.”

The Texans have another young linebacker joining the ranks in third-round pick Christian Harris from Alabama.

Texans rookie Garret Wallow credits veteran linebackers for growth in 2021

Houston Texans rookie Garret Wallow credits the veteran linebacking corps for having an impact on his growth throughout the 2021 campaign.

Houston Texans rookie linebacker Garret Wallow can’t thank just one single veteran linebacker for his growth and progress throughout the 2021 season.

Wallow has to thank them all.

The fifth-round pick from TCU has been active for all 16 games to date, but started to see considerable action on defense in Week 15 against the Jacksonville Jaguars when he played 66 snaps and earned the start.

In the past three weeks, Wallow has generated 16 combined tackles, 1.0 sack, a tackle for loss, and a quarterback hit on 124 snaps.

“Kevin Pierre-Louis, Christian Kirksey, Kamu (Grugier-Hill), Neville (Hewitt), every single one had their impact on me in their own ways just by the way they carried themselves on and off the field, just the advice that they gave me from their past experiences,” Wallow said. “My success is their success, I always say that because they’ve led me a long way and I’m very thankful to those guys.”

Wallow wants to pass on the information he has learned, not just hoard it for himself.

Said Wallow: “Hopefully, when I get in that position that they are in, I’m able to do that to any newcomer coming in, as well.”

Wallow’s chance to put a punctuation mark on his rookie season is Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time against the Tennessee Titans at NRG Stadium.

Texans rookie LB Garret Wallow’s hard work paid off against the Jaguars

Houston Texans rookie linebacker Garret Wallow put in copious hours of work, and it paid off with his big day against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Houston Texans were severely disadvantaged for Week 15 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Texans would be without their leading tackler in linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill. Veteran linebacker Christian Kirksey also provided a stable presence to the second level of the Texans’ 4-3 scheme.

Where there is an opening is an opportunity, and it was rookie linebacker Garret Wallow’s chance to shine.

The fifth-round pick from TCU had been working behind the scenes to become a student of the game and be well prepared for when he finally got to take the field.

“I think a lot of the preparation has been put in since we first arrived here in OTAs and just everyday just having that mindset, just getting better, learning, learning the game better, becoming a student of the game better in any way that’s possible,” Wallow said. “So I think that definitely contributed for all of us to get to this point.”

Wallow got the start alongside linebacker Neville Hewitt, and the rookie was highly productive for Houston as he generated 11 combined tackles, 1.0 sack, a tackle for loss, and a quarterback hit in the 30-16 win over the Jaguars at TIAA Bank Field.

Cornerback Tremon Smith, who has worked with Wallow predominantly on special teams throughout the season, has had a firsthand look at how the rookie has taken football seriously outside of practice.

“Definitely coming in as a rookie — you know, he had his first start today too with Kirksey and Kamu out,” Smith said. “He’s learning his blocks each and every day. He’s staying after practice. He’s at practice early. And it’s going to pay off and he’s going to be a great player for us on down the line.”

The Texans improve to 3-11 on the season, and Wallow will have another chance to prove he belongs in Week 16 against the Los Angeles Chargers at NRG Stadium.
