4 takeaways from the New Orleans Saints’ 2023 schedule

4 takeaways on the challenges and benefits of the New Orleans Saints’ 2023 schedule:

We’ve had some time to look over the New Orleans Saints’ 2023 schedule and process how each individual matchup impacts the overall outlook, so here are our immediate takeaways from the slate now that we know when and where every game is going to kick off:

NFL gives New Orleans Saints three prime time games on 2023 schedule

The NFL gave the New Orleans Saints three prime time games on their 2023 schedule, but two of them fall on much-maligned Thursday nights:

Let’s start with the good news: the NFL released its 2023 schedule of regular season games on Thursday, and the New Orleans Saints have been awarded three slots in prime time, where they’ll be featured in nationally-broadcast contests.

And now the bad news. Two of those matchups are going to fall in the dreaded Thursday night slate, meaning at best weird vibes and at worst a terrible upset defeat. Let’s explore each matchup that’s going to kick off under the bright lights:

LOOK: The New Orleans Saints’ 2023 schedule is here

The New Orleans Saints announced their schedule for the 2023 season, including several games against last season’s playoff teams and rookie quarterbacks:

We’re going into Year 2 of the Dennis Allen era with the New Orleans Saints, and expectations are high for this team after they came up short last season. It’s playoffs or bust for a Saints team that’s gone all-in this offseason, recruiting a new starting quarterback in Derek Carr and moving tens of millions of dollars around to fit talented free agent pickups under the salary cap.

They should get where they want to go with this favorable schedule. Just one opponent won double-digit games last year (the Minnesota Vikings, at a fraudulent 13-4). Few of this year’s matchups will be against teams returning from the playoff tournament. With a weak division in front of them and many winnable games lined up, there are going to be no excuses should Allen’s squad miss the postseason again. Here’s every game on their 2023 schedule:

Week Date Opponent Time (CT) Tickets
1 Sept. 10 vs. Tennessee Titans 12 p.m. Tickets
2 Sept. 18 at Carolina Panthers 6:15 p.m. Tickets

7 Oct. 19 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars 7:15 p.m. Tickets
8 Oct. 29 at Indianapolis Colts 12 p.m. Tickets
9 Nov. 5 vs. Chicago Bears 12 p.m. Tickets
10 Nov. 12 at Minnesota Vikings 12 p.m. Tickets

There’s what everyone has been waiting for: Nola.com’s Jeff Duncan reports that the New Orleans Saints will end the 2023 season in Week 18 with a home game against the division-rival Atlanta Falcons, though the NFL is waiting to finalize a date and time for the matchup — just like they did last year.

Additionally, Duncan reports that the Saints will visit the Falcons for a road game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Week 12, the Sunday after Thanksgiving. That’s a noon kickoff on Nov. 26.

If you include the playoffs, the Saints and Falcons are all tied up in their series history at 54-54 (Atlanta won their lone postseason tilt). So there’s a lot on the line already before you consider each team’s chances in the race for an NFC South division title.

The 2023 NFL schedule release is drawing closer by the minute, but there have already been plenty of reports, rumors, and leaks flying around on what’s in store for the New Orleans Saints.

Some of those claims (like the Saints supposedly traveling to Germany for a game with the New England Patriots) have already been disproven by the NFL. So take this with a grain of salt and wait for the official schedule release to make your travel arrangements.

In the meantime, we’ll maintain this live tracker for what’s being reported by reputable outlets. Check this space often as we piece the Saints’ schedule together:

Predicting the Saints’ primetime matchups in 2023

Predicting the New Orleans Saints’ primetime matchups in 2023: How many national broadcasts will the team receive?

The NFL’s 2023 schedule is set to be released in a sprawling two-day rollout, and one of the big questions New Orleans Saints are searching to answer lies in the number of primetime games their team will get. After a couple of down years, how often will the Saints get to shine in front of a national audience?

Not including last year’s early-morning showing in London, the Saints were featured on three night games (twice on Monday nights, one Thursday night) and one late-afternoon spot. All of their other matchups were held in the usual 1 p.m. ET/noon CT time slot. A year earlier, the Saints were shown in five primetime games and twice in the late afternoon.

So what can Saints fans expect coming off their team’s 9-8 and 7-10 finishes? Here’s our best guess before the schedule is announced:

What we know about the 2023 NFL schedule so far: Saints opponents, key dates

What we know about the 2023 NFL schedule so far: New Orleans Saints opponents, key dates for season kickoff and Super Bowl LVIII

The NFL is wringing every single minute possible out of their ostentatious two-day schedule release, but here’s a quick look at what we know about the New Orleans Saints’ 2023 season so far. Some things are already clear, like their list of opponents and a few key dates on the league calendar like the season kickoff game and Super Bowl LVIII. Other things remain up in the air — literally, in the case of one game reportedly being played overseas.

Let’s get up to speed before the NFL schedule news, leaks, and other rumors consumes the media cycle:

NFL expands 2023 schedule release into sprawling two-day extravaganza

Leave it to the NFL to convert a mundane schedule release into a sprawling two-day extravaganza. Here’s when we’ll learn what’s in store for the Saints:

Leave it to the NFL to transform what should be a mundane announcement of dates to circle on your calendar into a sprawling, two-day multimedia extravaganza. The 2023 season schedule release will begin on Wednesday, May 10 and wrap up on Thursday, May 11. It’s a lot of fanfare to simply attach times, dates, and a unique location or two to the list of opponents we already know about.

New Orleans Saints fans are among those who should be tuning in sooner — they’re reportedly traveling abroad for a game with the New England Patriots in Germany, which will be confirmed one way or another when this year’s International Series games are announced on Wednesday (exclusively on NFL Network and ESPN).

But that’s not all. Amazon will reveal the first-ever Black Friday Game on Wednesday, too, with “select individual games” to be announced on the Fox & Friends and CBS Mornings programs as well.

That brings us to Thursday’s full reveal. More individual games (likely primetime and holiday features for national broadcast) will be announced on Good Morning America (ABC) and the Today Show (NBC), with each team sharing their full schedules that evening. Saints stars Cameron Jordan and Tyrann Mathieu will be a part of the primetime broadcast on the NFL+ streaming service at 7 p.m. CT/8 p.m. ET, as well as their former teammate Mark Ingram II.

Some other changes are coming, too. League broadcast partners have more flexibility in choosing which games they want to feature, and not every team is guaranteed a primetime game. Conversely, teams can be forced into playing two Thursday night games each season after previously being limited to one appearance. Stay tuned for what all this means for the Saints.

NFL schedules release date for its 2023 schedule release

It’s finally almost here. The NFL has scheduled a release date for its 2023 regular season schedule release: We’ll soon know when and where every Saints game will kick off:

Grab your calendar — ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the NFL plans to announce its full 2023 schedule of regular season games for every team, including the New Orleans Saints, on Thursday, May 11. So they’ve effectively scheduled a release date for the NFL schedule release. We’ve got to wait another week to learn when these games will be played in September, October, November, December, and January (and, hopefully, February’s Super Bowl LVIII).

We already know the list of opponents the Saints will kick off against. They’ll host the division-rival Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers at the Caesars Superdome along with other NFC teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, and New York Giants as well as rare AFC matchups with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans.

And the Saints will hit the road to visit the Falcons, Panthers, and Buccaneers in addition to the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans (AFC), Indianapolis Colts (AFC), and New England Patriots (AFC). Reporting from Germany says the Saints and Patriots will play an international series game in Frankfurt but we’ll know for sure once the NFL announces its schedule of games.

So make plans to check in next week for our full coverage of the Saints schedule release and confirmation on all of these matchups. The NFL news cycle never seems to slow down.

LOOK: Best photos of Saints standouts Cameron Jordan and Demario Davis at the Pro Bowl Games

The New Orleans Saints were well-represented at this year’s Pro Bowl Games by defensive end Cameron Jordan and linebacker Demario Davis, who helped NFC team coach Eli Manning defeat his older brother Peyton Manning and the AFC in a 35-33 rout in front of a heavy crowd at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

It was Jordan’s eighth year to be named a Pro Bowler, but it was the first time for Davis, and they each made the most of it — even if Davis was involved with a controversial officiating decision in the Pro Bowl dodgeball game. Still, it’s good to see that they and their families enjoyed themselves on such a big stage. The 2022 season wasn’t easy for anyone and this was a well-earned, low-stakes event to unwind with their friends and peers from around the league.

Here are some of the best photos of each Saints standout from the Pro Bowl Games:
