Saints downgrade injured starter, won’t play vs. Commanders in Week 15

The New Orleans Saints downgraded injured quarterback Derek Carr, confirming he won’t play against the Washington Commanders in Week 15:

The New Orleans Saints downgraded injured quarterback Derek Carr on Saturday afternoon, confirming he won’t play against the Washington Commanders in Week 15. This was the expectation, but given Carr’s initial game status (doubtful), it’s now official.

Carr fractured a bone in his non-throwing hand last week and suffered a concussion on the same play, having tried to leap ahead to convert a first down. He came up short and hurt himself in the attempt. It’ll be his backup Jake Haener filling in on Sunday.

How long Carr will be out remains to be seen. Interim head coach Darren Rizzi has said he’ll be evaluated on a week-to-week basis, but if this injury lingers we may not see Carr again through the final four games. In the meantime, Haener has a big opportunity in front of him, and the second-year pro should try to make the most of it.

Brian Branch downgraded for Week 4 with an illness

Lions safety Brian Branch downgraded for Week 4 with an illness and is now listed as doubtful for Monday night

Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch was set to play in the Week 4 matchup on Monday night after clearing the NFL’s concussion protocol. However, the team updated his status and it’s not trending well for Branch.

The team provided an update that indicates Branch is now doubtful for Monday night’s game against the Seattle Seahawks with an illness. That info breaking out on Sunday morning is not good at all; no player ever listed with a “doubtful” status has ever played under head coach Dan Campbell.

If Branch can’t go, undrafted rookie Loren Strickland and second-year Brandon Joseph will fill in at safety. The Lions placed Ifeatu Melifonwu on I.R. on Saturday.

What to make of the A.T. Perry healthy scratch situation from Week 2

A hand injury sidelined him for Week 1, but A.T. Perry was a healthy scratch for Week 2. What should we make of his situation going into Week 3?

The New Orleans Saints have been hitting a little more often on their draft picks as of late, with players like Bryan Bresee, Taliese Fuaga, Chris Olave, and even a resurging Trevor Penning all helping them to a 2-0 start.

But one of their most-hyped picks in the later rounds was in 2023, when they took A.T. Perry out of Wake Forest. He was a highly gifted athlete who produced at the college level and seemed very talented, so why did he fall? Perry himself cited that he was told teams were scared off by unspecified character issues, which he said was due to him being a quieter person.

The concern now lies in his utilization through the first few weeks of the season, including preseason. He was marginally used in most of the preseason games but many believed that was because he had locked in a higher-up spot on the depth chart. That may have been the wrong read on the situation. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill tracked all 267 passes Derek Carr threw during team drills at training camp and Perry only caught one of them.

Then he suffered a hand injury, missing Thursday and Friday practices before Week 1’s kickoff game, and was questionable to play before being ruled out. This is pretty normal and nothing really looked awry. Then he returned to practice before Week 2, fully practicing the whole week and entering game-day without a designation.

However, he ended up being a healthy scratch in Week 2, despite the team generally being somewhat short at the wide receiver position. They ran Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, Cedrick Wilson Jr., Bub Means, and Mason Tipton in his stead the first two weeks.

Could this have been purely precautionary as it was a hand injury, and avoiding further complications is for the best? Possibly. But this week against the Philadelphia Eagles will be very telling, as Wilson is coming off an abdomen injury and was limited all week despite having no designation.

Perry was limited Thursday with an illness but returned fully on Friday, and is again questionable to play. If he misses a third game to start the season, it will be a somewhat odd occurrence for sure. He seemed to play well in his time last year, totaling 12 receptions for 246 yards (20.5 average) and 4 touchdowns, but who knows what is going on behind the scenes. Hopefully Perry can work his way back into the rotation. If not, Tipton, Means, and Wilson will need to step up in his stead.

The weekly New Orleans Saints injury report isn’t getting any easier to read. Latest update on Chiefs LB Willie Gay Jr.’s arrest

All the latest updates on #Chiefs LB Willie Gay Jr. in one place:

Kansas City Chiefs LB Willie Gay Jr. got himself into some trouble on Wednesday evening.

Gay was arrested on one count of misdemeanor criminal damage in Johnson County, Kansas on Wednesday night. The arrest allegedly stems from a domestic dispute where Gay is accused of damaging a vacuum cleaner, door frame and more items. Gay missed the team’s second practice of the week as he awaited his Thursday afternoon arraignment.

According to a new report from the Kansas City Star, Gay has since appeared before a judge and pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor criminal damage charge. Gay is expected to be released from the Johnson County Detention Center this afternoon on his own recognizance, meaning he will not need to post any bond. He’ll be served with a protection order prohibiting him from contacting the mother of his 3-month-old son, who was involved in the incident on Wednesday night, at least until a civil judge hears the case.

Speaking to reporters following practice on Thursday, Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo deferred to Andy Reid on the situation.

“Yeah, I really don’t know,” Spagnuolo said Gay’s status for the divisional round. “I’m going to leave that up to Andy (Reid), I’m sure he’ll address it. But if this happened in the game and it was an injury, you know, today, we’d just operate that way. But we’ll see what happens.”

Tyrann Mathieu, who is a defensive leader for Kansas City, said he hadn’t yet spoken to Gay. He’s had his own off-field troubles in the past and will likely be someone who Gay relies on for guidance moving forward.

Reid will provide an update to reporters on Gay’s status following practice on Friday. Short of discipline from the league or another incident, expect Gay to return to practice and play against the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round.
