Gabriel Murphy listed among top undrafted players

Gabriel Murphy hype continues!

The buzz around the National Football League is with the schedule release coming out. But, as that comes and goes, experts and even fans around the country are looking at rosters and sizing up the potential of all 32 teams. Thomas Valentine of Pro Football Focus wrote about the undrafted players that have joined an NFL roster. He wrote one player from each team, and UCLA’s Gabriel Murphy made the list.

Valentine had this to say about Murphy.

The Vikings have invested heavily in the edge rusher spot this offseason, signing Andrew Van Ginkel, and Jonathan Greenard in addition to drafting Dallas Turner in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. They’re set with their plan, but undrafted free agent Gabriel Murphy could make a dent as an impact rusher. He earned 55 pressures and an 85.0 grade in 2023, as well as an 86.0 pass-rushing grade.

The 23-year-old Murphy spent two seasons with the Bruins following his 24 games at North Texas. He started in all 26 games with UCLA and earned honorable mention All-Pac 12 honors. He was also part of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in the Spring of 2023.

Vikings give massive guaranteed money to UDFA Gabriel Murphy

Once the 2024 NFL Draft ends, the free agency frenzy for the players undrafted starts. The Vikings made sure not to lose out on Murphy.

Once the 2024 NFL Draft ends, the free agency frenzy for the players undrafted starts. They each get a standard three-year contract worth roughly $2.8 million, but the guarantees make the difference.

For Gabriel Murphy, he received a significantly larger number than most.

The Vikings gave the former UCLA Bruin $245,000 in contract guarantees. This amount of money gives a good indication that Murphy should be expected to make the 53-man roster when camp concludes. In comparison, last year, both Ivan Pace Jr. ($236,000) and Andre Carter ($340,000) made the roster after large guarantees.

The team has made it a point to make sure that pass rush and the edges are defended well in the second-year of Brian Flores’ defense. The team lost Danielle Hunter but replaced him with Jonathan Greenard in free agency and then Dallas Turner through the draft.

Adding Murphy to that group of new faces gives the Vikings depth at a valuable position and allows them to create constant pressure with the rotation they have now built.

The Vikings biggest sleeper pick after the 2024 NFL Draft

This is a great sleeper pick for Minnesota.

TouchdownWire came out with every NFL team’s biggest sleeper pick after the 2024 NFL Draft. While the Vikings had some late-round picks that might be able to make an instant impact during their rookie season — most notably Kyhree Jackson from Oregon — Doug Farrar believes Minnesota’s sleeper pick wasn’t an actual pick. That’s because the Vikings’ biggest sleeper might be undrafted free agent Gabriel Murphy out of UCLA.

Murphy is the lone undrafted player on our list, and while the Vikings had some good picks in the third day (most notably Oregon cornerback Khyree Jackson in the fourth round), it’ll be tough for any of those guys to present equivalent value to what UCLA edge-rusher Gabriel Murphy can bring. At 6′ 2⅜” and 247 pounds, Murphy may be a bit undersized for some teams, but he put up eight sacks and 61 total pressures last season, and he absolutely has NFL-ready tape.

Perhaps some evaluators thought that he benefited too much from being Laiatu Latu’s bookend, but when you watch the tape, there are enough examples of Murphy winning against more than one blocker in his way. He’ll make Brian Flores’ blitz packages that much more interesting and effective.

Murphy was widely expected to be drafted during Day 3 of the NFL Draft, but as Farrar mentioned, perhaps his size deterred NFL teams from selecting the Edge rusher. There is no doubt that his college production made Murphy a great late-round candidate because his production shows he is NFL-ready.

Murphy played two seasons with UCLA. He transferred to the Bruins after spending three seasons with North Texas. During his two-year career with UCLA, Murphy had 76 tackles, 20 TFLs, and 9.5 sacks in 26 games. Murphy had a terrific combine and ran a 4.68-second 40-yard dash.

The UDFA will need to show out during training camp in order to carve out a role in the Brian Flores-led defense in 2024.

Gabriel Murphy could make immediate impact for Vikings

Gabriel Murphy to Minnesota seems like an ideal landing spot.

The UCLA Bruins saw just two players selected during the 2024 NFL Draft. However, a series of players inked UDFA deals. The Murphy twins both were signed, which is no surprise.

Gabriel Murphy signed with the Minnesota Vikings and Grayson Murphy signed with the Miami Dolphins.

And, Jarrett Bailey of Touchdown Wire pegged Gabriel Murphy as one of five UDFAs who could make an immediate impact. Here’s what he wrote:

Anytime you heard “UCLA defender” this draft cycle, it was in reference to Laiatu Latu. However, Murphy had a terrific 2023 season in his own right. He finished the season with eight sacks and 16 tackles for loss. In a Brian Flores defense that lost Danielle Hunter, D.J. Wonnum, Marcus Davenport, and Dean Lowry in free agency, Murphy has a golden opportunity to earn a roster spot on a now-thin Vikings’ defensive line.

Murphy might have landed in an ideal situation with a solid chance to crack the 53-man roster. If so, that could end up being an absolute steal for Minnesota.

One Minnesota Vikings’ UDFA could be an instant-impact player

Could another UDFA make an impact for the Vikings in 2024?

The Minnesota Vikings signed 17 UDFAs following the 2024 NFL Draft. While it’s hard for most UDFAs to make the 53-man roster, there are some that get the job done. Look at Ivan Pace Jr. for an example. The undrafted linebacker out of Cincinnati became a starter on the Minnesota defense during the season — he finished the season with 102 tackles.

Who might be this year’s Pace Jr.? According to TouchdownWire, UCLA Edge rusher Gabriel Murphy could become an instant-impact player for the Vikings in 2024.

The Vikings drafted Dallas Turner and signed both Andrew Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard, but Murphy has a chance to carve out a role with the Vikings. If anyone can get big production out of a UDFA it’s Brian Flores, after all.

Former Bruin Gabriel Murphy lands with Vikings after NFL Draft

Gabriel to Minnesota.

The Murphy twins were some of the most productive players UCLA has produced along the defensive line in recent history. Leading all career pressures by prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft, Gabriel and Grayson were expected to hear their names called. But neither did.

That said, both of them found a new home in the NFL, with the former Bruins’ outside linebacker Gabriel landing in Minnesota and Grayson in Miami.

Gabriel, whose performance at the Shrine Bowl turned some heads, signed with the Vikings after going undrafted. With the Vikings selecting edge defender Dallas Turner in the first round from Alabama, adding Gabriel post-draft makes sense.

Given the Vikings’ relatively young defense led by defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who is known for his exotic blitz schemes, signing another dynamic player off the edge adds depth.

To sustain a pass rush, the Vikings are throwing several prospects at the wall and seeing who sticks. UCLA fans hope that Gabriel sticks and continues to play in the league alongside his brother.

Colts hold private meeting with UCLA edge rusher Gabriel Murphy

The Colts were reportedly one of several teams to hold a private meeting with UCLA edge rusher Gabriel Murphy. Here is what you need to know.

The Indianapolis Colts were one of several teams to reportedly host a private meeting with UCLA edge rusher Gabriel Murphy, according to Aaron Wilson.

Along with the Colts, Houston, Cincinnati, and New England also held private meetings while Murphy visited Minnesota.

Murphy is a bit undersized at 6-2, 247 pounds, but is a very good athlete. He recorded an elite Relative Athletic Score of 9.28, with a 40-time of 4.68 seconds, along with elite vertical and broad jump numbers.

Murphy’s size may not deter the Colts, but it is also worth noting that he has arms under 31 inches, which could impact where he falls on Chris Ballard’s big board.

Murphy played 2,106 career defensive snaps over five seasons, the last two of which have come at UCLA. During that span, he recorded 104 total pressures and 10 sacks.

In 2023 specifically, Murphy’s 61 pressures were the seventh-most among edge rushers, and he ranked 10th in pass-rush win rate. Against the run, Murphy’s grade from PFF ranked 35th out of 200 eligible defenders.

He’s also played 305 special teams snaps during his collegiate career, most of which came on the kick return, punt return, and field goal blocking units.

For more on Murphy, Lance Zierlein of NFL.com had this to say in his pre-draft report:

“What Murphy lacks in size and length he makes up for with skill and production. He’s short-armed, which will worry teams on the pro level, but his hands are so sudden and polished that it tends to ease concerns. He works his hands and feet in perfect harmony to elude blockers like a shifty runner eluding tacklers. Murphy could struggle to survive against run blockers who square him up, but he typically finds a way to slither out of sustain attempts on the collegiate level. He failed to dominate one-on-one opportunities at East-West Shrine Bowl practices, but his ability to maneuver into the backfield as a run defender and pass rusher has merit and should give him a shot to become a solid 3-4 edge rusher.”

The Colts have both a short-term need at edge rusher and potentially a long-term one as well.

Despite finishing the 2023 season ranked fifth in sacks, the Colts didn’t get after the quarterback all that consistently, ranking 23rd in total pressures, meaning they were really efficient in converting those pressure opportunities into sacks.

From a sustainability standpoint in 2024, statistically speaking, replicating that level of sack production on, relatively speaking, so few pressures will be difficult to maintain.

On top of that, if we look ahead to next offseason, both Kwity Paye and Dayo Odeyingbo are set to be free agents. In the coming weeks, the Colts have to make a decision on Paye’s fifth-year option.

Murphy is ranked as the 116th overall prospect on the consensus big board.

3 UCLA players make Draft Wire top 200 prospects list

Three UCLA players make the cut.

The 2024 NFL Draft begins on Thursday, April 25, in Detroit. Laiatu Latu is the big name for the UCLA Bruins and is easily expected to be a first-round choice on Thursday night.

Latu will also be in attendance at the draft, so it would be surprising to see him fall to Day 2.

Jeff Risdon of The Draft Wire ranked his top 200 players of the 2024 NFL Draft and three UCLA players made the list.

Latu is the first one (of course) ranked at No. 13, and Risdon wrote the following: “Master technician who has overcome serious health hurdles.”

The other two are the Murphy twins, Gabriel and Grayson. Gabriel comes in at No. 72 and Grayson is No. 146 on this list, and both Murphy twins have been opening the eyes of scouts over the past few months and locking in some visits.

These three are essentially locks to be selected during the 2024 NFL Draft, and Darius Muasau is another UCLA player who could get selected. Carson Steele has an outside shot but might end up as an undrafted free agent.

UCLA EDGE Gabriel Murphy the latest 2024 NFL draft top-30 visit for the Browns

Another pass rusher visits the Browns

UCLA edge rusher Gabriel Murphy is the latest player in Berea for a top-30 visit with the Cleveland Browns as the 2024 NFL draft nears. It is interesting to see the team bring in another defensive end with how packed and talented the position already is for the Browns.

In Murphy’s final season with UCLA, he totaled eight sacks playing opposite of potential first-round pick Laitu Latu. When you turn on the tape, you see an explosive player off the line of scrimmage with several pass-rush moves in his bag of tricks.

Murphy’s hand usage might be my favorite aspect of his game. On the other side, he has shorter arms, and when linemen get their hands into his chest, he can struggle to shed blocks consistently. At the next level, due to some of his limitations, Murphy is likely a situational pass rusher to add to your rotation. If the Browns feel like they need more depth, he could produce as a pass rusher immediately in a limited role.

Four-star linebacker Zaydrius Rainey-Sale to meet with UCLA

UCLA is a hosting a 4-star LB.

The UCLA Bruins remain in the mix for a top-rated outside linebacker. After offering a scholarship to Bethel linebacker Zaydrius Rainey-Sale back in March, the Bruins are one of his four official spring visit destinations.

In an article from national recruiting editor Brandon Huffman for 247 Sports (subscription required), Rainey-Sale lists UCLA, Arizona State, Washington, and Florida State as his official visits this spring.

On May 17th, the Bruins get the first crack at trying to seal the deal for Rainey-Sale. If their pitch can blow him away, the remaining teams on his list will have to chase UCLA in their offer.

With the Bruins graduating the Murphy twins, Laiatu Latu and Darius Muasau, this season, they are looking for their future pass-rusher. Locking in Rainey-Sale could be the start of another wave of great UCLA defenders.

Though Rainey-Sale still has his senior season to play at Bethel, the Bruins are planning for the future, a welcome sign under new head coach DeShaun Foster.
