Top takeaways from Panthers’ snap counts in Week 15 win over Falcons

Do the Panthers have an effective gadget in Ihmir Smith-Marsette?

Sunday’s suboptimal conditions certainly factored in to how the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons played out their Week 15 matchup. The unrelenting rain and the wind forced both teams to go outside of their normal approaches to accommodate the presence of Mother Nature.

So, while the snap counts from Carolina’s 9-7 victory are quite interesting, we may have to take away these takeaways with a grain of salt . . .

Panthers Week 15 inactives: 2 WRs down as healthy scratches vs. Falcons

The Panthers are heading into their Week 15 matchup against the Falcons with just four active wide receivers.

With the rainy and windy forecast now proven to be correct, the Carolina Panthers are preparing to be grounded.

Wideouts Terrace Marshall Jr. and Mike Strachan have been ruled out as healthy scratches for today’s potentially sloppy matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. That’ll leave the Panthers with just four receivers at their disposal—Adam Thielen, DJ Chark, Jonathan Mingo and Ihmir Smith-Marsette.

Marshall Jr. will be inactive for the fifth straight game. The former second-round pick has amassed 18 receptions for 134 yards in his third NFL season.

Carolina, also in anticipation of a run-heavy approach, called up guards Gabe Jackson and J.D. DiRenzo from their practice squad yesterday afternoon. Both are standard elevations.

Here’s the full list of inactives for the Panthers this afternoon:

  • CB D’Shawn Jamison
  • OLB Eku Leota
  • WR Terrace Marshall Jr.
  • OT David Sharpe
  • WR Mike Strachan
  • TE Ian Thomas

And as for the visiting Falcons:

  • OLB Bud Dupree
  • TE John FitzPatrick
  • WR Mack Hollins
  • OL Chris Lindstrom
  • OL Kaleb McGary
  • DL David Onyemata
  • QB Logan Woodside (emergency third QB)

Panthers elevate 2 offensive linemen for Week 15 matchup vs. Falcons

The Panthers are elevating guards Gabe Jackson and J.D. DiRenzo for their Week 15 matchup against the Falcons.

Given the wet and windy forecast for Charlotte, the winner inside the trenches at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday is likely to come out on top. So, the Carolina Panthers enlisted the help of some reinforcements.

As reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com on Saturday afternoon, the team has called up guards Gabe Jackson and J.D. DiRenzo for their Week 15 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Both are standard elevations from the practice squad.

Jackson, who was elevated for last week’s loss to the New Orleans Saints, is making his second trip up to the roster. The 32-year-old veteran was signed to Carolina’s practice squad back on Nov. 29.

DiRenzo is an undrafted rookie out of Rutgers University. He appeared in all three of the Panthers’ preseason contests, where he amassed 102 offensive snaps.

The Panthers are expected to start fellow undrafted Nash Jensen at right guard and Cade Mays at left guard. Last Sunday, Mays came on in relief of Justin McCray—who has since been placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Panthers elevate Gabe Jackson, Chris Wormley for Week 14

New Panthers G Gabe Jackson could be making his first appearance here in 2023.

The Carolina Panthers seem to be set with their starting guards for Week 14. But that hasn’t stopped them from bringing along some extra help.

As reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com this afternoon, the team has elevated guard Gabe Jackson for their Week 14 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. The 32-year-old veteran was signed to the practice squad on Nov. 29.

Jackson, a third-round selection from the 2014 NFL draft, has registered nine pro seasons—all between the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders and the Seattle Seahawks. He’s made 130 starts over 131 games in his career.

Interim head coach Chris Tabor told reporters on Friday that he expects Justin McCray and undrafted rookie Nash Jensen to start at the guard positions. Jackson will provide some much-needed depth on the interior—a spot that has lost Brady Christensen, Austin Corbett and Chandler Zavala for the remainder of the season.

Carolina also elevated defensive lineman Chris Wormley, who will be making his third trip up to the roster. He played in 17 defensive snaps between Week 12 and Week 13.

Panthers reveal starting guards for Week 14

Panthers interim HC Chris Tabor said he expects to see the same starting guard combination from last week.

Meet Sunday’s two starting guards, same as last week’s two starting guards.

Carolina Panthers interim head coach Chris Tabor told reporters on Friday that he expects offensive linemen Justin McCray and Nash Jensen to get the starting nods at the guard positions in Week 14. Both started against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, with McCray lining up on the left and Jensen on right.

“Yeah, 100 percent,” Tabor said when asked if he’s confident in what they have at their disposal. “We’d be perfectly fine with those guys playin’ in there and givin’ us a chance to win.”

Week 13 marked the first starts of the 2023 campaign for McCray and Jensen, with the latter getting the very first start of his NFL career. The duo, however, did not fare well according to Pro Football Focus—who gave them the two lowest overall offensive grades for the Panthers.

Tabor also acknowledged that he’d be comfortable if Gabe Jackson, who signed to the team’s practice squad last week, had to play.

Panthers placing Chandler Zavala on injured reserve

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Panthers are placing rookie G Chandler Zavala on injured reserve.

A rough season has gotten even rougher for Carolina Panthers guard Chandler Zavala.

As first reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the rookie offensive lineman is being placed on injured reserve. He will now, per the team’s official release, miss the remainder of the campaign due to the knee injury he sustained in this past Sunday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans.

The Panthers selected Zavala in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft. A hamstring injury would delay the youngster’s summer debut, as he spent the early portion of training camp on the team’s active/physically unable to perform list.

Despite that, Zavala returned in time to claim the starting job at right guard to begin the regular season. He would, however, suffer another setback—as the 6-foot-5, 332-pounder was carted off the field in the team’s Week 5 outing against the Detroit Lions with a neck injury.

Zavala would miss the next four games due to a stinger. He returned in Week 11 as the starting left guard.

Per Pro Football Focus, Zavala has allowed 33 pressures over 233 pass-blocking opportunities. His 7.1 pass-blocking grade is the worst amongst all offensive linemen who have played in at least five games this season.

As a measure of insurance for their battered interior line, which will also be without Austin Corbett and Brady Christensen, the Panthers added nine-year veteran Gabe Jackson to the practice squad.

Panthers’ updated practice squad after addition of Gabe Jackson

The Panthers added nine years and 335 pounds of hog molly to their practice squad on Wednesday.

The Carolina Panthers’ practice squad got quite a bit bigger on Wednesday.

As announced by the team earlier this afternoon, nine-year veteran Gabe Jackson has been added to the group. The experienced 6-foot-3, 335-pounder should provide some much-needed help following a slew of injuries along the interior of Carolina’s offensive trench.

Here’s what the practice squad now looks like with Jackson in the fold:
