Guerschon Yabusele led France with 18 points, a block, and an assist in the loss.

Several Boston Celtics alumni faced off in the German National Team’s surprise 76-63 win over the French National Team on Thursday, which saw former Celtics center Guerschon Yabusele led France with 18 points, a block, and an assist in the loss, with ex-Boston big man Vincent Poirier putting up another 8 points, 4 boards, an assist, and 2 steals. Wing and Celtics alum Evan Fournier added another 7 points, 2 rebounds, an assist, and a steal.

For Germany, Dennis Schroder chipped in 11 points, a board, 5 assists, and a steal, while old friend Daniel Theis put up another 8 points, 6 boards, an assist, and a steal to help secure the upset win over the 2020 Olympic silver medalists from Tokyo.

“No one said it’s going to be easy,” said French (and Minnesota Timberwolves) center Rudy Gobert via Eurohoops’ Antonis Stroggylakis. “We are facing this team at their home.”

“We aren’t good today. We got way too many turnovers. And they were very physical. We got to find ways to play our game when the other team is physical and the game isn’t played our way.”

Trio of Boston Celtics alumni score in France’s 96-90 loss to Bosnia-Herzegovina in FIBA qualifier play

Evan Fournier, Guerschon Yabusele and Vincent Poirier were on the board in the loss.

Several Boston Celtics alumni scored during the French National Team’s 96-90 loss to the national team of Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday.

Former Celtics shooting guard Evan Fournier led France with 24 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. A pair of former Boston big men also managed solid outings in the FIBA World Cup group stage qualifying loss.

Big man Guerschon Yabusele had an outstanding 16 points, 7 boards, 2 blocks and a steal. Ex-Celtics center Vincent Poirier chipped in 4 points, 4 rebounds, an assist and as many steals in the losing effort.

Fournier in particular had a rough night in terms of efficiency. He shot just 7-of-19 from the field overall, but made up for it beyond the arc, connecting on 46.3% of his shots from deep.

His six turnovers and four personal fouls did not help France’s cause, but expect the 2020 Olympic silver medalists to bounce back.

Former Boston Celtics wing Evan Fournier recognizes France is a EuroBasket target

The ex-Boston shooting guard’s French National Team won silver in the 2020 Olympics, making them the team to beat in EuroBasket play.

The French National Team is a target for the rest of the national teams scheduled to compete in this year’s EuroBasket tournament after France finished in the top three in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games held last year (delayed due to the pandemic, if you are wondering about the year), and former Boston Celtics shooting guard Evan Fournier knows it.

As one of the deepest and toughest teams in the FIBA World Cup qualifier event that begins across Europe in various locations on Sept. 1, the current New York Knicks wing admitted France will be bulletin board material.

“We have a target on our backs,” Fournier said in a recent article by Eurohoops’ Johnny Askounis.

“We won the silver medals in last year’s Olympic Games, so (we) must display our strength,” he added.

The French are 6-1 in their exhibition schedule ahead of the EuroBasket competition. They face Bosnia-Herzegovina in Sarajevo on Saturday, so if it is strength Fournier wants his team to project, it certainly hasn’t had much difficulty doing so thus far.
