Jason Kidd credits former Lakers coach Frank Vogel for his success

Mavs head coach Jason Kidd feels former Lakers coach Frank Vogel has made him better at his craft.

When the Los Angeles Lakers won the 2020 NBA championship, they had Frank Vogel as head coach and a future head coaching prospect in Jason Kidd as an assistant.

He had previously coached the Milwaukee Bucks but had been fired early in the 2017-18 season, and many felt he would soon get another head coaching job somewhere.

Last summer, Kidd left the Lakers to succeed Rick Carlisle with the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavs weren’t expected to do much this season, but after starting 16-18, they became one of the hottest teams in the NBA.

Now, they will face the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals after pulling off a massive upset of the top-seeded Phoenix Suns.

Kidd readily gave Vogel credit for getting him ready to take the Mavs further than anyone thought they would go.

“Yeah, I guess assistant coach doesn’t count to be able to make it to the Western Conference Finals, but Frank Vogel, it’s an easy answer, Frank Vogel prepared me for this and then also my early stops in Brooklyn and Milwaukee. Just understanding, putting guys in a position to be successful and then also listening to your star player, he wants to have fun so let’s have fun. And the accountability piece, those are the words that we talked about this season and that’s what we hold each other accountable. It’s those words that we came up with and no one’s exempt from them. There’s a lot of things I’ve learned in the last couple of years about coaching, but you have to have talent too to win and that’s what I have here in Dallas.”

Plenty of Lakers fans have bemoaned the fact that Kidd was no longer a member of the team this season, especially now that Vogel has been fired.

Kidd would’ve been a very solid head coaching candidate for the Purple and Gold if he had still been on Vogel’s staff this year.

To that end, it’s worth revisiting my report from earlier this month about Jackson’s affinity for Westbrook. When the decision was made to fire Vogel, there was a belief from on high that Westbrook wasn’t put in a position to succeed. For Jackson’s part, sources say he has cited the Gary Payton dilemma in the 2003-04 Lakers season as a way of illustrating a coach’s need to make the best of roster decisions that weren’t his preference. In essence, deal with the hand you’re dealt rather than complain about it.

Former Lakers coach Frank Vogel is a candidate for Hornets coaching job

Frank Vogel, who was fired by the Lakers last month in controversial fashion, has a shot at coaching in the NBA next year.

When Frank Vogel was fired by the Los Angeles Lakers just after their final regular season game last month, some may have wondered if he would soon get another head coaching job.

Well, he has reportedly interviewed with the Charlotte Hornets for their current vacancy.

Via Lakers Daily:

“The Hornets are in the market for a new coach after they let James Borrego go following their loss to the Atlanta Hawks in the league’s play-in tournament this season.”

Charlotte has an up-and-coming young team that is centered around 20-year-old All-Star LaMelo Ball, the younger brother of former Laker Lonzo Ball, as well as forward Miles Bridges and guard Terry Rozier.

The Hornets won 43 games this season, and although they are a high-powered offensive team, defense is the bone of contention for them, as they finished 23rd in defensive rating.

If they hire Vogel, one can count on him to help fix their defensive issues, just as he did a couple of years ago for the Lakers when they hired him.

Reportedly, another former Lakers head coach, Mike D’Antoni, is the favorite to land the Charlotte coaching job.

Report: Former Lakers coach Frank Vogel interviewed for Hornets’ job

The Hornets have added a championship coach to their interview list.

As the Conference Finals of the NBA Playoffs are right around the corner, the Charlotte Hornets are making moves for next season.

Following relieving James Borrego of his duties after four seasons at the helm, the search for the next head coach of the Hornets has began.

Charlotte has been linked to several candidates, including Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson, Bucks assistant Darvin Ham, Mavericks assistant Sean Sweeney, and long-time head coach Mike D’Antoni. On Thursday, a new candidate serviced.

Reported by Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, the Hornets have interviewed former Lakers head coach Frank Vogel for their vacancy.

Vogel was fired following a disappointing season in Los Angeles, where the Lakers failed to make the postseason. In 2020, Vogel helped lead the Lakers to a championship in his first season as head coach.

As Fischer reported, Charlotte’s first round of interviews have completed. Stay tuned to Lonzo Wire for updates on the Hornets’ coaching search.

More on this storyline

When the decision was made to fire Vogel, sources say his handling of Westbrook and the inability to find a way to make him a more productive part of the program were among the factors that played a big part. There was a strong sense that it was on Vogel to make the Westbrook experiment work, and the fact that it didn’t lead to questions about whether Westbrook had been put in a position to succeed. That sure smells like the hope of a Russ revival to me. And how’s this for a tidbit to tie this thread up: Jackson is known to have been a fan of Westbrook’s throughout his career. Sources say Phil Jackson has no interest in taking on this coaching job (or any other) himself — let’s just stop that rumor right here — but his view of Westbrook is relevant. As we’ve established, Jackson’s voice matters again. -via The Athletic / May 5, 2022
Josh Lewenberg: Masai said he’s been getting calls about Adrian Griffin, among other Raptors assistants. It would appear one of those calls was from the Lakers. “I think Adrian is right there on the cusp of becoming a head coach in this league”- Ujiri on Griffin yesterday. -via Twitter @JLew1050 / May 4, 2022

How Russell Westbrook reportedly factored into Frank Vogel’s firing

According to an NBA insider, one reason the Lakers fired Frank Vogel was his management of Russell Westbrook.

The 2021-22 NBA season has been an unmitigated disaster for the Los Angeles Lakers, and Frank Vogel became a casualty of it.

The head coach was fired last month just after the team’s final regular season game, and some wonder if letting him go was the right option.

According to an NBA insider, one reason the Lakers gave Vogel a pink slip was because he was unable to make Russell Westbrook fit in well with the rest of the roster.

Via The Athletic:

“When the decision was made to fire Vogel, sources say his handling of Westbrook and the inability to find a way to make him a more productive part of the program were among the factors that played a big part,” wrote Sam Amick. “There was a strong sense that it was on Vogel to make the Westbrook experiment work, and the fact that it didn’t led to questions about whether Westbrook had been put in a position to succeed.”

Amick went on to write that to him, it appears that this reasoning means there is at least some hope within the organization that Westbrook will remain on the team and that they will make one more attempt to make things work with him.

I’m starting to wonder if the Lakers …

I’m starting to wonder if the Lakers might not trade Russell Westbrook this summer after all. And no, not just because Oram made a compelling argument on Monday as to why they should think twice about it.

Adrian Wojnarowski: “This is very much …

Adrian Wojnarowski: “This is very much a committee in L.A. putting together this coaching search. And one person who is certainly significantly involved in this process is Phil Jackson. He’s got a voice in this. He did last time when they hired Frank Vogel. He and Kurt Rambis, (Vogel) had been somebody they had considered with the Knicks before hiring Derek Fisher in New York… They’re moving deliberately. They’re not doing seven or eight or nine candidates all at once. They’re kind of going down a list and taking their time with it. I think that process is going to take a bit.”
