Wisconsin basketball coasts to early season-defining win vs Virginia

Wisconsin shoots its way to early season-defining win vs Virginia

Wisconsin started Feast Week and the Fort Myers Tip-Off in impressive fashion last night, defeating a 4-0 and top-25 Virginia team 65-41.

The Badgers out-shot the Cavaliers 40% to 32% (plus 44.4% vs 28.6% from three), out-rebounded them 48-21 and never trailed on their way to a decisive victory.

This schedule is a gauntlet with Tennessee at home, Providence on the road and now Virginia before conference play even starts. But last night’s win feels like a jumping-off point for this Badgers team. A win that we will look back upon as the unofficial start to the season.

Leaders from last night’s contest include Steven Crowl with 15 points and 10 rebounds, freshman John Blackwell with 10 points, Tyler Wahl with 9 points and 10 rebounds and Chucky Hepburn with six assists despite a forgettable night shooting the basketball.

An early signature win for Greg Gard’s experienced team.

Tip time and date set for Wisconsin’s Fort Myers Tip-Off contest against Virginia

This matchup won’t please fans of high-scoring basketball…

A report surfaced last month that Wisconsin basketball will face off against Virginia during the early-season Fort Myers Tip-Off.

If you enjoy high-paced, high-scoring basketball then this matchup isn’t for you. The Badgers and Cavaliers have played each other three times over the last decade. Those final scores:

  • Dec 4, 2013 – Wisc 48, UVA 38
  • Nov 27, 2017 – UVA 49, Wisc 37
  • Nov 23, 2018 – UVA 53, Wisc 46

It’s truly a beautiful matchup. Both teams play the same style of slow, defensive, grind-it-out basketball with an emphasis on possession and taking care of the basketball. After all, Virginia Head Coach Tony Bennett is the son of former Wisconsin Head Coach Dick Bennett. The parallels between the two programs are easy to draw.

The Wisconsin basketball Twitter account officially announced the upcoming matchup earlier today. Included in the tweet: the note the game will take place on November 20, 2023 at 5 p.m. central and will be broadcast on FS1.

Virginia enters the 2023-24 season after a stellar 25-8 season, but a disappointing first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, Wisconsin enters having missed last year’s tournament yet appears to have improved greatly this offseason.

Football is fast-approaching, but this early-season contest will be here before we know it.

Report: Wisconsin basketball to face an ACC blue blood at the 2023 Fort Myers Tip-Off

If you enjoy points, this matchup is not for you.

There is no better introduction to a sport’s season than college basketball’s run of Thanksgiving tournaments. Those events have been great experiences for the Wisconsin Badgers as of late, with recent high finishes at the Battle 4 Atlantis (2022) and Maui Invitational (2021).

Greg Gard’s team will get the season rolling with another tournament this season, the Fort Myers Tip-Off. CBSSports’ Jon Rothstein reported yesterday Wisconsin will open the event with a contest against the ACC’s Virginia. The winner will then face the winner of SMU vs. West Virginia in the final round of the event.

If you’re a fan of high-paced, high-scoring basketball, Wisconsin vs Virginia is not the matchup for you. The two programs have met three times in the past decade. Here are those final scores:

  • Dec 4, 2013 – Wisc 48, UVA 38
  • Nov 27, 2017 – UVA 49, Wisc 37
  • Nov 23, 2018 – UVA 53, Wisc 46

Not once did the total in the game hit the century mark. Round four between these two terrific basketball programs should be a tremendous introduction to the 2023-24 college basketball season.
