Five-star CB Denver Harris commits, signs with Texas A&M after winning state championship

Denver Harris announced his signing with Texas A&M after North Shore beat Duncanville for a state championship.

Saturday will be a day five-star North Shore (Texas) cornerback Denver Harris never forgets.

Harris ended his senior season by leading No. 22 North Shore to a state championship over No. 11 Duncanville. Shortly after the game ended, he took to Twitter to announce that he would be staying in the Lone Star State and playing his college football at Texas A&M.

Harris is the No. 17 recruit in the class of 2022, according to 247Sports’ industry-generated Composite rankings and is the fifth five-star prospect to join Texas A&M’s 2022 recruiting class.

Harris ultimately picked Texas A&M over a group of finalists consisting of Alabama, LSU and Texas. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound cornerback starred for North Shore as a senior, bouncing back from a knee injury suffered in last year’s state semifinals. Harris missed the first half of his final season of high school football, but eventually returned to being a full-time player by the beginning of North Shore’s state title run.

“Tall, long cornerback prospect with elite frame potential relative to the position,” 247Sports’ Gabe Brooks said in his scouting report of Harris. Size already gives opposing wideouts problems. Possesses a ton of potential as a jammer. Uses frame to advantage and plays physical brand of coverage.

“Physical nature translates to tackling ability. Light on his feet and sinks hips. Shows impressive redirecting ability, whether in coverage or pursuit. On-field top-end speed looks encouraging. Flashes turn-and-run ability to shadow wideouts in vertical passing game.”

USA TODAY Super 25 Week 14 Recap: Mater Dei downs Servite for Southern Section title

USA TODAY High School Sports takes a look at how each team ranked in the Super 25 fared in Week 14.

No. 1 Mater Dei’s high-flying passing attack took a back seat to its ground game against No. 5 Servite on Friday night, relying on its running backs to lead it to a 27-7 win and a CIF Southern Section title.

Raleek Brown, Ajon Bryant and Quincy Craig each rushed for a touchdown as Mater Dei took care of Servite to win its third Southern Section championship since 2017. Mater Dei will now play in the CIF Open Division championship game on Dec. 11.

Mater Dei wasn’t the only program ranked in the USA TODAY Super 25 to score a big win over the weekend. No. 4 Bergen Catholic won a state championship with a victory over rival Don Bosco Prep, No. 7 Center Grove edged a tough Westfield team to keep its season alive and Miami Central knocked off undefeated Killian.

USA TODAY Super 25 Week 13 Preview: Multiple monster playoff matchups

USA TODAY High School Sports previews Week 13 for each team ranked in the Super 25.

Week 13 of the high school football season is going to be a good one.

With the playoffs underway across the nation, multiple teams ranked in the USA TODAY Super 25 are slated to meet in a win-or-go-home matchup this weekend. No. 1 Mater Dei hits the road to take on No. 10 Centennial in the CIF Southern Section Division I semifinals, while No. 4 St. John Bosco and No. 9 Servite do battle for the second time this season. St. John Bosco won by 14 points in the regular season.

No. 19 Hoover and No. 22 Thompson are set for a rematch of their own in the Alabama state playoffs. Hoover stunned Thompson during the regular season, but Thompson did not have its star quarterback in the second half of that game.

Outside of postseason play is another monster matchup between No. 3 IMG Academy and No. 15 St. Frances Academy in their season finales. Both teams are coming off bye weeks and are well-rested to close the season out strong.
