Florida vs Texas A&M Game Preview

Why Florida Will Win

The Texas A&M offense worked against Ole Miss.

The Aggies hadn’t hit 400 yards against any FBS team, and they came up with 480 helped by a huge day from the passing game and …

Lost.

They played well, they moved the ball, and they lost 31-28. And why? There weren’t any turnovers, the O was great, and they couldn’t stop the Rebel running game.

Florida might not be doing everything right, and the defense is having problems getting off the field, but the ground game should come up with at least 200 yards.

The Gators are 4-0 when running for more than 210 yards, 0-4 when they don’t, and …

Why Texas A&M Will Win

Texas A&M has a much better run defense than it showed against a dominant Ole Miss ground game.

Alabama ran over the Aggies and so did Arkansas. As long as they can keep Florida from controlling the clock and keeping the chains moving, the offense should be able to do the rest, especially through the air.

It’s not time to get too excited quite yet, but freshman Conner Wiegman threw for 338 yards and four touchdowns without any picks against Ole Miss.

Florida’s secondary has allowed 220 yards or more in each of the last five games and over 300 in the last two – the D can’t get off the field.

Texas A&M has a massive problem converting its third down chances, but it might catch a break this week. Florida has the second-worst defense in the nation at coming up with third down stops.

What’s Going To Happen

There’s a shot Texas A&M can run the table against Auburn, UMass, and LSU and go bowling with a loss to the Gators, but that’s asking for a lot from a team on a four-game losing streak.

Florida needs to show it can win away from home, but to be fair, the only two it played so far were against Tennessee and Georgia.

Both teams are struggling, but the Aggies are having more problems. Florida’s running game will take over late to pull out a surprisingly entertaining game.

EDIT NOTE: A slew of A&M players were hit with the flu and were ruled out at game time. We changed the prediction.

Texas A&M vs Florida: 5 Thoughts On The 41-38 Aggie Win Over The Gators

5 thoughts and an instant reaction on the Texas A&M win over Florida.

5 thoughts and an instant reaction on the Texas A&M win over Florida.

[jwplayer 4fbCft6d]

5. Jimbo Fisher got his win

Texas A&M was mediocre in a 17-12 win against Vanderbilt, and it was thoroughly outclassed in the 52-24 loss to Alabama.

Finally, he was able to beat a top five team as the Aggie head coach, but it has to be the beginning. This is what a guy with a national championship ring and a ten-year contract is supposed to do.

This needs to be the game-changer. This needs to be when Texas A&M knows it really can not only hang with the best teams in college football, but beat them.

This was tough. Florida was fantastic, the Aggies were down in the second half, and they adjusted, fought through the adversity, and they came back to pull it off. They forced the late turnover, they took advantage of the situation, and they did it.

It is possible to win really, really big games at Texas A&M.

4. Texas A&M figured out how to pound away

Kellen Mond was brilliant. This was his signature win, hitting 25-of-35 passes for 338 yards and three scores as he calmly led the way on the game-winning drive, but this all turned on the offensive line.

This was the moment when the Aggies knew they could pound away when needed.

The Texas A&M running game was fine in the first two games, but nothing special.

Isaiah Spiller had a few big runs, and super-soph Ainias Smith was used a bit, but the ground attack failed to to hit 200 yards against Vanderbilt and was stuffed by Alabama.

That all changed against the Gators, and it started with a brutal ten play, 75-yard touchdown drive after getting down 28-17 early in the second half on the way to rushing for 205 yards and averaging over five yards per carry.

The offensive line was finally able to eat. It dominated the Gator defensive front when it had to.

3. The Florida defense couldn’t close

Kyle Trask threw for 312 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. He’s on a better pace than Joe Burrow was after three games last year.

Kyle Pitts was good again – at least early – and the running game was fine. There might have been a late turnover, but this one is on the defense.

The Gators were flirting with problems over the first two games, and against the Aggies, they got burned by a grilling day from QB Kellen Mond, that pounding ground game that took over in the second half, and they couldn’t come through when needed.

The Gators were beaten by big plays through the air, they were ground on when it was time to get physical, and there were problems everywhere in between.

Florida has the talent on D, and it allowed A&M to convert 12-of-15 third down tries along with a fourth down chance. It had to come up with one big stop late, and couldn’t do it.

However …

Why Florida Will Win

The Texas A&M secondary hasn’t been a rock so far.

Mac Jones went full Tua with a 435-yard passing day with four scores last week in Alabama’s win over the Aggies, hitting on big play after big play. That’s one thing, but letting Vanderbilt’s Ken Seals connect on 69% of his throws – he struggled way too much against LSU the following week – is a problem.

Welcome to Kyle Trask.

He doesn’t have as many passing yards as Joe Burrow did through the first two games of 2019, but he has one more touchdown pass, completing 72% of his throws for 684 yards and ten scores with just one pick in the first two games.

Kyle Pitts has already locked up the Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end with 12 catches for 227 yards and six touchdowns in the first two weeks. He and his quarterback are about to give the Aggies some huge problems.

However …

Why Texas A&M Will Win

Come on, Kellen Mond, let’s do this already.

The senior quarterback has to rise up and be special for the Aggies to be any sort of a factor in the SEC, and while he threw for 318 yards and three scores last week against Alabama, most of the production came too late.

The Florida secondary sharpened up a bit against South Carolina – there weren’t as many big plays allowed or downfield shots as Ole Miss came up with the week before – but it was still hardly the rock it’s supposed to be.

The Gator run defense hasn’t been anything special, either.

For an Aggie offense that hasn’t gotten off the ground yet, this is the week to crank up the production.

What’s Going To Happen

Trask and the Florida offense have been just that good. The line is giving Trask time to let the deep plays develop, and the receivers are making things happen when they get the ball on the move.

No, the defense hasn’t been good enough, but the pass rush is there to bother Mond. It’ll be a shootout early, but the Gators will be steadier later.
