Florida vs Tennessee Game Preview

Why Florida Will Win

Outside of one massively bad throw against Kentucky, the Gators aren’t hurting themselves. Considering things haven’t been all that smooth, winning the mistake game will be everything in this.

They’re not getting hit with a slew of penalties, there’s been just one lost fumble, and overall the team is net even in turnover margin.

On the other side, Tennessee has only turned it over three times, but the 24 penalties are too many, the special teams have been a tad shaky, and the Gators will be the first true test talent-wise.

The offensive line has been strong, the running game has been great, and now the team has to do what it does best. Get the dangerous runners in space, be more about grinding than trying to be sensational, and hit the Tennessee defense hard.

Yeah, the Vols have been strong so far defensively – playing Ball State and Akron will do that. Pitt was able to run a little bit, but it tried to win the game through the air. That was a problem when starting QB Kedon Slovis got hurt.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Tennessee Will Win

You have thrown as many touchdown passes as your 2022 Florida Gators have.

Yes, the running game has been strong, and yes, Anthony Richardson will be an interesting NFL draft pick, but the passing attack has been wildly inconsistent at best, disastrous at worst, and if the Vols can hold up against the run, everything should be fine.

The Florida offense is getting all of the attention, but the defense is the biggest problem. It’s the worst in the SEC at third down spots, the run D just got hammered by USF, and there’s not enough of a pass rush to bother the Vol backfield.

Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker has been fantastic, the passing game has yet to throw a pick, and if there’s some semblance of balance – running the ball wasn’t an issue against the MAC teams – Florida’s offense won’t be able to keep up.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

There’s been a lot of bending without breaking from the Florida defense.

As bad as it has been at times, it’s been able to get the job done. It’s not totally fair to blame the Kentucky loss on the Richardson pick six, but if he doesn’t throw that, it’s a different game.

Florida will hold up just enough to keep this close, but the inability to get much out of the passing game will be too much to overcome. Tennessee won’t go off, but it’ll get out with the win it’s been waiting for since 2016.

Florida vs Tennessee Game Preview

Why Florida Will Win

The Gators have to use their size inside.

Tennessee can rebound, and coming up with blocks and turnovers isn’t a problem, but can it handle Colin Castelton on the inside and can that set up the threes after hammering the interior?

When the Gators are okay from the outside, forget it. They’ve been struggling with their consistency from three over the last few games, but they were great from the field in wins over South Carolina and Mississippi State, the defense can generate transition points when needed, and …

Why Tennessee Will Win

The Florida defense hasn’t been good enough.

Despite the size, the defensive rebounds haven’t been there – but that’s partly because everyone is hitting from the field. The Gators have allowed four of the last six opponents to hit 50% or better from the field, and Tennessee should be able to work inside and out.

Yeah, the Volunteers were rocked by Kentucky even though they shot well, but Florida is way too inconsistent from the outside and they don’t have the overall pop to keep up if this starts getting into an up-and-down game.

What’s Going To Happen

As long as this doesn’t come down to a free throw battle, Tennessee will be fine.

Florida has lost three of its four road games and two of its three neutral site games. At home, the Volunteers will hit more timely threes, hold their own on the boards, and the defense will come up with its third straight strong performance.

Florida vs Tennessee Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

The Vols are rebuilding, but in a slight surprise, the defense hasn’t been all that bad. It’s great against the run, good at getting into the backfield and it’s been great on third downs.

But in this, it’s about whether or not Joe Milton – coming back from an injury – or Hendon Hooker and the passing game can get going against a Florida secondary that held its own against Alabama, but isn’t a rock.

It’s also about whether or not …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Florida Will Win

Tennessee turns the ball over.

The Vol run D stats are a bit misleading. Pitt can run a bit, but Bowling Green and Tennessee Tech weren’t going to do much on the ground. Florida won’t take many chances, because it doesn’t have to.

The formula for this is easy. Run the ball, keep running it, control the clock, and wait for the Vols to make a mistake.

Tennessee is awful in the time of possession battle – that’s sort of by design with its fast attack that keeps things moving. The Gators should be able to grind it out offensively, and for a defense that doesn’t take the ball away a ton – just three times so far – getting at least two takeaways would tip the scales.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Just how beaten up emotionally and physically is Florida after that wonderful battle against Alabama?

If anything – from all indications – the team was charged up by that now that it knows it can hang with the elite of the elite.

The Gators are also catching a break with Milton likely starting – Hooker is the better option. Hooker won big games like this at Virginia Tech, and Milton 1) never won big battles at Michigan and 2) isn’t accurate enough to pull this off.

It’ll take a little while to get going, but Florida will have the ball for over 35 minutes as it grinds its way to a win.
