Florida vs LSU Game Preview

Why Florida Will Win

This isn’t going well for LSU.

It was able to come up with a nice win at Mississippi State, lost a tough battle with Auburn, and last week it got double-upped 42-21 against Kentucky.

Star CB Derek Stingley Jr. has a foot injury, star WR Kayshon Boutte is out for the year with a leg injury, and that’s just part of the problem.

The Tigers aren’t able to run the ball well enough to matter – the 147 yards against Kentucky were a season high. The other side was worse, getting ripped apart by the Cats for 330 rushing yards.

So far, LSU is 0-3 when allowing more than 115 yards on the ground, and 3-0 when it doesn’t. LSU, welcome to the Florida ground game.

The Gators were held in relative check by Kentucky – gaining just 171 yards – but they’ve been dominating everyone else, averaging 273 yards per game. Only Air Force and Army are coming up with more.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why LSU Will Win

It’s not all bad.

LSU still has plenty of terrific talents.

Max Johnson is having a nice season – he could be a bit more accurate and consistent, but he’s not getting a whole lot of help from the running game – as he builds off the 435-yard performance in last year’s 53-48 thriller over the Gators.

The defense might not be amazing against the run, but the front line can get into the backfield enough to matter.

Pressure the Gator runners and don’t let them get to the second level, don’t make mistakes – LSU is fantastic at limiting the penalties and turnovers – and keep pushing a secondary that’s statistically okay, but hasn’t seen a strong passing attack in a few weeks.

LSU can do all of that, and …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The pressure is all on the Florida side of the field.

Ed Orgeron might be a big thing on the Hot Seat circuit, but Florida is still in the mix for a possible New Year’s Six game and has the Georgia problem coming up next. Lose this, and it might be a run of three losses in four games, and …

It’s not going to happen.

The Florida D won’t be anything special – Johnson will get his passing yards – but the ground game will dominate the time of possession battle and the D will hold firm forcing field goals instead of touchdowns in key moments.

It won’t make up for last year’s loss, but it’ll be a good road win.

Why LSU Will Win

What is LSU doing right?

The effort is there, and the team is essentially trying to get the future stars as much experience as possible, and there’s just enough of a passing game to make the Gators worry a bit.

TJ Finley and Max Johnson are both struggling, but they’re at least combining to keep pushing the passing attack.

Florida’s mindset might be on the SEC Championship next week, there’s not enough of a ground game to worry about, and there’s just enough of a Tiger pass rush to get a little bit of pressure on Kyle Trask.

For all of the great things the Gators are doing, they’re not quite putting games away like Alabama is. There wasn’t any drama over the last few weeks, but there seems to be a ceiling around the mid-to-high 30s points-wise – LSU might be able to hang around for a while.

Week 15 College Schedule

Why Florida Will Win

LSU’s offense has stalled.

There’s still talent on both sides of the ball, but the freshman quarterbacks just aren’t moving the ball enough, and the defense isn’t holding up.

Pressed in game after game, the secondary is allowing an SEC-high 313 yards per game with an offense that’s not providing any help. LSU might not be bad in the time of possession battle, but that’s not because of long scoring marches.

Kyle Trask continues to roll. It might take a little while to heat up at times, but he’s hitting well over 70% of his passes over the last four games with 16 touchdown passes and no picks. It’ll be more of the same against the Tigers.

What’s Going To Happen

There’s no reason for style points for Florida, and there no point in doing anything but getting through this game healthy and getting to Alabama at 9-1 with a shot at the College Football Playoff with a win.

LSU will come up with just enough points to not make this a total wipeout, but unlike the last few games, Florida will come out hot and put this away fast.

Florida (2-1) vs LSU (1-2) Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

To get ugly and put a global pandemic into football terms – is Florida okay? Not only is it coming off the tough loss at Texas A&M, but it’s had enough of a COVID outbreak to shut down team facilities this week.

LSU might be having a whole slew of issues, but what is it doing well?

The defensive front is getting behind the line, the run defense has been solid, and the D – for all of its problems – has been able to take the ball away nine times in the first three games.

Lost in the 1-2 start is that 1) the Tigers are closer than it might seem to being 3-0, and 2) Myles Brennan has been great, throwing for 337 yards or more in each of the first three games with 11 touchdowns and three picks. The passing game is keeping the team alive, and now it gets to hit up a Gator defense that’s getting torched for 331 yards per game.

Brennan has been great at cranking up the yards, but …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Florida Will Win

As good as Brennan has been, LSU can’t keep things moving. It’s dead last in the SEC on third downs, going 0-for-10 in last week’s loss to Missouri and converting just nine of 39 chances overall on the year.

The Tiger offense can’t afford a service break against Kyle Trask and the Gator O.

Just when it seemed like the 623 passing yards and five touchdowns allowed to KJ Costello in the LSU loss to Mississippi State seemed like an aberration, Missouri’s Connor Bazelak went off for 406 yards and four scores and hit on big play after big play down the field.

Trask has been Heisman-worthy, connecting on 72% of his passes for 996 yards and 14 scores with a pick. The offensive line is giving him plenty of time to work against an LSU secondary with superstar corner Derek Stingley fighting through an ankle injury.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Will Florida even be able to go? Assuming the game is still on and things won’t take an awful turn, expect yet another wild and crazy 2020 SEC shootout with both teams hitting the 300-yard passing mark with ease.

Florida will be sharper, it’ll be stronger on the lines, and it’ll be far, far better on third downs.
