ACC Tournament: Betting Odds

The most interesting bet on the board to me is Louisville at +340.

Tuesday night kicks off the 2020 ACC Tournament from Greensboro, North Carolina.  The four top seeds; Florida State, Virginia, Louisville and Duke all get a bye into the quarterfinals that begin Thursday but odds are out for all 14 ACC schools.

Per BetMGM, top-seeded Florida State enters the tournament as a +200 betting favorite.  For the inexperienced gamblers, that simply means for every dollar you risk betting Florida State to win it all, you’ll be rewarded with two dollars in winnings.  For instance – a ten dollar bet on Florida State would pay $30 ($20 in winnings and your $10 bet back).  Keep that in mind for the rest of the odds.

Duke may enter the tournament with the fourth seed but has the second best odds of winning at +240.  No. 3 Louisville (+340) and No.4 Virginia (+700) round out the teams with byes through the first and second rounds.

From there odds drop significantly as you’ll find No. 5 North Carolina State at +2500 while No. 6 Syracuse and No. 8 Clemson both pay +3300 odds.  After that is finally where you’ll find No. 7 Notre Dame at +4000 or 40-1 odds.

No. 14 North Carolina checks in at +5500 before No. 9 Miami and No. 13 Wake Forest at +10000.  No. 11 Virginia Tech has the second longest odds at +15000 while Notre Dame’s first round opponent, No. 10 Boston College has the longest odds on the board at +20000.

The most interesting bet on the board to me is Louisville at +340.  They dropped two of their final three regular season contests and three of their final six but find themselves with plenty of talent and on the other side of the bracket than both Florida State and Duke, instead having a very-beatable despite good Virginia team on their side.

ACC Tournament Bracket Set

The ACC regular season has come to a close and the transition to college basketball’s postseason now begins. Find out who and when your squad is playing here!

The ACC regular season has come to a close and the transition to college basketball’s postseason now begins. For Notre Dame that means the ACC Tournament which gets started in Greensboro, North Carolina on Tuesday.

In beating Virginia Tech on Saturday, Notre Dame locked up a 10-10 ACC record and seventh place conference finish. They get a first round bye as a result and will play No. 10 Boston College on Wednesday night as tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET.

If Notre Dame wins that they will play No. 2 Virginia on Thursday night at 7 p.m. and the winner of that contest will play the winner of the No. 2 Louisville, No. 6 Syracuse, No. 11 Virginia Tech and No. 14 North Carolina pod.

No. 1 Florida State and No. 4 Duke sit on the other side of the bracket.

Early impressions from me are that this is as good of a draw as Notre Dame could hope for. A Boston College team they should beat, a seconded-seeded Virginia squad they should have beat on the road earlier this season and then a potential semi-final draw that wouldn’t be against the only team to really run them out of the gym in an ACC contest this year.

March Madness is upon us. Here’s to hoping for a nice run into maybe Friday night for Mike Brey and the Fighting Irish.

Watch: Notre Dame Can’t Finish vs. Florida State

Stop if you’ve heard this one before:  Notre Dame lost a close game it was in the whole time.

Stop if you’ve heard this one before:  Notre Dame lost a close game it was in the whole time. The fact that this came when it not only could have upset No. 7 Florida State but snap a long drought against ranked teams only adds to the frustration that has been evident throughout the season. One can only hope it doesn’t drop the Irish from NIT conversation to CBI talk. Watch the madness, not the good kind, here.

Notre Dame Basketball: Irish Collapse vs. Seminoles

the takeaway is the same old story:  The Irish can stay in close games, but they falter when it really matters more often than not.

More than once on Wednesday’s ESPN2 broadcast of Notre Dame’s game against No. 7 Florida State, we were reminded it had been two years, three months and 11 days since the Irish last defeated a ranked team. For almost all of the contest, it appeared they would get that monkey off their back.

But the Irish (18-12, 9-10) let a 13-point second-half lead slip away to the point where they went back and forth between holding slim leads and being tied up.  Finally, Trent Forrest rebounded his own missed layup and put it through with 3.8 seconds left to give the Seminoles (25-5, 15-4) their first lead since 5-4 and a 73-71 win.

Prentiss Hubb achieved game highs of 24 points and six assists while shooting 5 of 9 from 3-point range. John Mooney collected his latest double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Dane Goodwin also scored 16 while coming off the bench.

Of course, the takeaway is the same old story:  The Irish can stay in close games, but they falter when it really matters more often than not.

Notre Dame Basketball: Time to See the Seminoles

The Irish will play their final two regular-season games at the Purcell Pavilion, starting Wednesday against No. 7 Florida State.

With Notre Dame’s NCAA tournament hopes dashed short of an ACC tournament title, the only thing left is to see if it can finish strongly enough to get a home game in the NIT or one of the other lesser postseasons college basketball decided needed to exist. The Irish (18-11, 9-9) will play their final two regular-season games at the Purcell Pavilion, starting Wednesday against No. 7 Florida State (24-5, 11-4). Revenge will be on their mind after a one-point loss Jan. 25 in Tallahassee.

History stands to be made during this homestand. By playing in both games, Rex Pflueger will break Pat Connaughton’s record for most appearances in program history (139). Pflueger also is seven steals away from 150 this season, which would make him the fourth Notre Dame player with 700 points, 400 rebounds, 300 assists and 150 steals. Meanwhile, John Mooney needs two double-doubles to pass Luke Harangody for the single-season record (25) and to match Bob Whitmore for third on the career list (47).

Notre Dame’s Small Chances at Dance Dashed by Deacons

Notre Dame had won seven of nine in conference play and gotten from just 2-6 in ACC play to 9-8 in conference play before this setback sent them back to .500 in league play at 9-9

It was a long shot at best entering Saturday afternoon that Notre Dame would hear their name called in a few weeks on Selection Sunday, but after an 84-73 loss at lowly Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon the Fighting Irish can start preparing for the possibility of an NIT berth.

Notre Dame had problems all afternoon in Winston-Salem, North Carolina as the now 13-15 Wake Forest Demon Deacons scored over 40 points in both halves. Despite a fine effort from John Mooney who totaled yet another double-double with 24 points and 17 rebounds, the Irish simply couldn’t slow down Wake Forest big man Olivier Sarr who put up 30 points in 32 minutes of action.

The Fighting Irish had been shooting better from beyond the arc but that hit the skids Saturday as they went just six of 22 (27.3%) from three. Conversely the Deacons made more (seven) while attempting far fewer (15) from three.

Notre Dame had won seven of nine in conference play and gotten from just 2-6 in ACC play to 9-8 in conference play before this setback sent them back to .500 in league play at 9-9. In an incredibly disappointing ACC top to bottom, Saturday’s loss against 14th place Wake Forest will certainly end their NCAA Tournament hopes with anything short of an unlikely ACC Tournament title.

Notre Dame returns to action Wednesday night as they will host Florida State, who is currently tied with Louisville atop the ACC standings with a 14-4 record.

Florida State RB Cam Akers to meet formally with Texans at NFL Scouting Combine

The Houston Texans have set up a formal meeting with Florida State RB Cam Akers at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Houston Texans liked what they saw from Florida State running back Cam Akers and they wanted more.

According to the former Seminole, after his informal meeting with the Texans on Tuesday night at the NFL Scouting Combine, the club has set up a formal meeting with him on Thursday.

Informal meetings are one thing — there is no limit on how many informal meetings a team can have with the 337 attendees. However, clubs are limited to 45 formal meetings at the combine, meaning that Akers showed the Texans something they wanted to explore more in a formal setting.

Informal meetings consist of a position coach. Formal meetings have more team personnel, sort of a group interview setting.

Akers rushed for 1,144 yards and 14 touchdowns on 231 carries in an otherwise forgettable 7-6 campaign for Florida State. Akers missed two games due to injury.

The Texans have decisions to make at running back with their top two backs in Lamar Miller and Carlos Hyde both out of contract and set to hit free agency on March 18.

Notre Dame – Latest on Bubble Watch

Win all four and the case gets stronger with a win that could potentially knock Florida State out of ACC contention for the regular season championship.

Notre Dame basketball picked up a much-needed win over Miami on Sunday, moving them to 17-10 overall on the season and perhaps more importantly, 8-8 in ACC play.  With four games to go before the ACC Tournament it’d appear that a minimum of three wins are needed to even have a chance at an NCAA Tournament berth.

There are those that spend seemingly 52 weeks a year breaking down potential brackets with who is in and who is getting whatever seed.  Let’s go to them to check on the latest on Notre Dame’s very faint bubble hopes:

USA TODAY –
Notre Dame considered, just not taken too seriously.  The good news is that the Fighting Irish find themselves in the “considered” list here and not on the “on life support” list.  However, a total of 11 teams are listed before Notre Dame finds it’s way on the list.  Best way to describe things here are like in “Dumb and Dumber” and the whole “So you’re saying there’s a chance!” line.

Joe Lunardi – ESPN
The bad news here is Notre Dame does not get listed in either the “first four out” or “next four out”.  The good news?  We’ll let you know when we find it.

John Gasaway – ESPN
Gasaway goes conference by conference and lists who is safely in the dance and which teams have work to do.  The good news is that Notre Dame doesn’t appear to have any work to do in his eyes.  However the Fighting Irish basketball team isn’t listed in the “safely in” category, either.

My thoughts:

You absolutely can’t lose any game other than the Florida State contest in the remaining four regular season games.  A win over Florida State would also go a long way but another bad loss against the likes of Boston College, Wake Forest or Virginia Tech would be disasterous.

Win all four and the case gets stronger with a win that could potentially knock Florida State out of ACC contention for the regular season championship.

If Notre Dame loses to Florida State but plays them close again, all hope probably isn’t lost but a strong showing in the ACC Tournament could at least aid Notre Dame’s hopes.

In short – just win.  A lot.  Doesn’t matter if its close or in blowout fashion, just win otherwise the hopes are going to be gone aside from the extremely unlikely chances that Notre Dame could win the ACC Tournament.

Prediction

Florida State 76, Louisville 69

Moneyline (ML)

FLORIDA STATE (-139) isn’t a bad play on the moneyline based on their straight-up victory at Louisville (+115) back in early January, and the struggles of the Cardinals in their two previous road contests.

New to sports betting? Every $1.39 wagered on the Seminoles ML will profit $1 if they win.

Against the Spread (ATS)

FLORIDA STATE (-2.5, -106) is a good value at plus-money on their home floor. The Seminoles blasted the Cardinals by 13 in the first meeting, and Louisville has dropped its past two road outings by a total of 21 points. That makes the ‘Noles a nice value in Tally.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 140 (-110) has cashed in eight of the past 12 games overall for the Cardinals, including 4-2 in the past six on the road. The Over has hit in three in a row at home for FSU, and the Over also cashed in the first meeting between these ACC goliaths earlier this season.

USA TODAY’s Latest Bracketology Not Giving Up on Notre Dame Yet

One outlet that hasn’t given up on Notre Dame’s NCAA Tournament chances quite yet is the USA TODAY.

After the then No. 7 Duke Blue Devils dismantled Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon I think most Fighting Irish fans who hadn’t already, began coming to grips that this team is probably headed to the NIT.

Considering the injuries, departures and lack of a bench that’s not a terrible accomplishment.  Obviously the goals are stated higher than that but all things considered this has been an impressive team in terms of what they’ve accomplished despite often being over-matched in talent.

One outlet that hasn’t given up on Notre Dame’s NCAA Tournament chances quite yet is the USA TODAY.

The outlet released their latest “Bracketology” on Monday and Notre Dame isn’t even listed on “life support” for their chances yet.  They’re still listed in the category Others considered for at-large bid”.

I’m a little surprised but there is still a lot ahead for Notre Dame.  Most importantly that begins in a couple of hours when a poor North Carolina teams comes to town in an absolute must-win for the Fighting Irish.

Following the Tar Heels tonight are dates with Miami, Boston College and Wake Forest which are all very winnable before a tough one on March 4 when Florida State visits South Bend.  The regular season concludes March 7 then as the Irish host Virginia Tech.

IF – and I can’t state that enough – IF — Notre Dame has a strong showing of at least 4-2 and more likely 5-1 in these next six, they’ll perhaps finish above .500 in conference play and approach the 20 win mark if not surpass it with an alright showing in the ACC Tournament.

This isn’t a team that’s by any means built to go on a deep tournament run and heck, it’s going to still take a lot of work to get there, but sign me up for even still being seen as having a chance at this point because I didn’t think there was a snowball’s chance in hell of that a few short weeks ago.

Now go beat Carolina.
