Jets among teams to vote against Thursday night flex scheduling

Flexible scheduling looks to be coming to Thursday nights in the NFL. Don’t thank the Jets for that, though.

According to Peter King of NBC Sports, the Jets were among eight teams that voted against the move to expand flexible scheduling to Thursday nights between Weeks 14 and 17. 2023 also begins flex scheduling for Monday nights as well.

King mentions the Giants, Packers, Bears and Saints as also having voted against the motion. The final tally was 22-8 with two teams abstaining from the vote. The motion needed 24 votes to pass at the owners’ meetings. There will be another meeting in May where the owners will vote again.

Chiefs among teams to vote for ‘Thursday Night Football’ flexible scheduling

The #Chiefs were one of 22 NFL teams to vote in favor of flexible scheduling for “Thursday Night Football.”

The Kansas City Chiefs were among the NFL teams to vote in favor of flexible scheduling for “Thursday Night Football” games at the NFL’s annual meeting last month in Arizona.

According to a report from CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr, each of the Chiefs, Eagles and Ravens voted “yes” on flexible scheduling for Thursday games when it was put to a vote last month. Thursday night games are among those that were previously not able to be flexed. The vote did not pass and was tabled for further discussion when NFL owners meet again in May.

The league did, however, pass a new policy to allow teams to be scheduled for two Thursday night games during the course of the season. It’s a change that both Patrick Mahomes and Justin Reid didn’t quite approve of.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reports that a total of 22 teams voted in favor of the rule change. Eight teams voted “no” and the Panthers and Broncos abstained from voting. The NFL needs just 24 “yes” votes for this rule to pass.

Breer added that Chiefs CEO and Chairman Clark Hunt was one of the owners trying to get both sides of the argument to meet in the middle on an agreement.

After that, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt stepped in and offered another compromise: Instead of four weeks of TNF flexes in 2023, the league could do only two weeks. Others then asked whether they could get 28 days’ notice and just two flexes for Year 1. That calmed down the room, and Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie suggested splitting the proposal apart and voting on the two aspects of it separately.

The main qualms from ownership, outside of the potential issues related to player health and safety, seemed to be about having adequate notice when a game was being flexed to or from Thursday night. The initial proposal called for 15 days time.

All in all, the potential for a rule change here is notable for a team like Kansas City, which already plays a ton of its games in prime time. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos reportedly wanted the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes in Week 2 when “Thursday Night Football” debuted on Amazon a season ago. If this policy eventually passes, it stands to reason they’ll want more Chiefs games in the future.

Which Chiefs games in 2020 are subject to NFL’s flexible scheduling policy?

The Kansas City Chiefs have 10 games that are eligible for flex scheduling in 2020.

The Kansas City Chiefs are already scheduled to play in five prime-time games during the 2020 NFL season, but could they be due for more or fewer games as the season progresses?

The NFL’s policy on flexible scheduling allows networks to move two games to prime time during weeks 5-10 of the NFL season. During Week 11-16, every Sunday game is eligible to be scheduled at a different time slot unless they’ve been protected by the network. Networks are allowed to protect just one game during that span, which is usually announced in mid-October. Only games originally scheduled for 3:25 p.m. CT are allowed to be moved to “Sunday Night Football.” During Week 17, there is no game scheduled for Sunday night as the NFL always flexes a game with playoff implications to that slot.

Below you’ll find all of the games eligible for flexible scheduling and my thoughts on their likelihood to be moved from their original time slots.

Week 7: at Broncos – 3:25 p.m. on CBS

Likelihood: High

This game is actually one of the most likely games for flexible scheduling for the Chiefs. CBS has three afternoon Chiefs games and they’re only allowed to protect one from being bumped to NBC for “Sunday Night Football”. I anticipate that they’ll be protecting the Buccaneers game in Week 12 or the Saints game in Week 15. That’d leave this pivotal AFC West matchup with the ability to be moved to Sunday night over a matchup between the Raiders and Buccaneers in Las Vegas.

Texans-Titans Week 17 rematch flexed to 3:25 p.m. CT kickoff

The Houston Texans versus the Tennessee Titans Week 17 season finale has been flexed to a 3:25 p.m. CT kickoff at NRG Stadium.

The NFL has announced they have moved the kickoff up for the Houston Texans versus Tennessee Titans rematch at NRG Stadium from a noon kickoff in Week 17 to a 3:25 p.m. start time.

The 3:25 p.m. kickoff will be the third late afternoon game of the year for the Texans, who have played a slew of noon games on Sunday this season.

The game will also be the first time since 2008 the Texans will have had two home games in the late afternoon time slot.

For the Titans, they are currently the No. 6 seed thanks to a loss from the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday to the New York Jets. Even though the Titans fell to the New Orleans Saints, Tennessee’s tiebreakers over the Steelers put them in the final wild-card spot.

A win and the Titans are assured a spot on the dance floor in January.

For the Texans, they can’t get out of wild-card weekend as the Baltimore Ravens are 13-2 and the New England Patriots are 12-3. To get to the No. 3 seed, which would mean the Texans might face the Titans, they would need to beat Tennessee in Week 17 along with the Kansas City Chiefs losing to the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football or to the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium.
