Portugal vs. Finland: How to watch international friendly, TV channel

Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. begin their final preparations for Euro 2024 with a match against Finland

Portugal will face Finland on Tuesday in the first of three warm-up friendlies prior to Euro 2024.

A Seleção will host Finland in Lisbon before two more home matches against Croatia and Ireland, prior to kicking off Euro 2024 on June 18 against the Czech Republic.

Roberto Martinez’s men will be among the favorites at the tournament in Germany, having won all 10 of their qualification matches in Group J.

They did, however, lose their first game in more than a year during the March international window, falling 2-0 to Slovenia.

2023 FIBA World Cup: Josh Giddey dominates in Australia’s 98-72 win over Finland

Australia kicks off Group E play with an impressive win over Finland.

Overcoming a slow start, Australia enjoyed a blowout win in its first group game against Finland, 98-72. Australia is 1-0 in Group E play.

The Boomers started lethargically and trailed, 21-17, after the first quarter. A 28-19 second-quarter advantage helped shift the tide toward Australia. By the start of the fourth quarter, it was essentially garbage time. Australia entered the final frame with a 16-point lead.

Josh Giddey had a strong FIBA debut for Australia, flirting with a triple-double: 14 points on 4-of-10 shooting, nine rebounds and eight assists in 25 minutes. He continues to make foul shooting a reliable skill by going 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Off the bench, Jack White also had a nice showing. In 15 minutes, he had seven points on 3-of-4 shooting and two rebounds. His stats included a pair on assists off dunks by Oklahoma City Thunder teammate Giddey. He had a few impressive defensive possessions on Finland’s Lauri Markkanen, on which the Finn struggled to create space.

Let’s look at instant reactions and highlights from Australia’s 26-point win over Finland.

Hike through history at Suomenlinna, Helsinki’s famous sea fortress

See this seaside fortress.

On a sunny weekday afternoon in June, Helsinki’s Suomenlinna sea fortress was hopping. Ferries loaded with visitors came and went. Locals wandered the miles of trails at this sprawling UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tourists learned about Scandinavian military history and visited museums. There was even a wedding going on, complete with women tottering around the old fort in high heels.

Finland was part of Sweden when the Swedes started to build the sea fortress, then called Sveaborg, in 1748. Since Sweden was warring with Russia, the country wanted to protect its eastern border against Russian attacks. It was Sweden’s biggest construction project at the time.

The fort held out for over half a century before surrendering to Russian forces in 1808. Suomenlinna bears the marks of history. It was heavily damaged during the Crimean War in 1855. During the First World War (1914–1918), the fort was part of the Naval Fortress of Peter the Great, protecting the Russian capital St. Petersburg. The area housed a prison camp during the Finnish Civil War in 1918. More than a thousand prisoners died from disease, hunger, or execution.

The grim, multi-layered history contrasts with the fun of a visit today. The fortress is a 15-minute ferry ride from downtown Helsinki. Restaurants, cafés, museums, and art and craft studios are open year-round. In summer, locals attend a popular outdoor theater. About 800 people live on the island.

Suomenlinna’s streets have no names, so it can be challenging to find your way about. Many tourists stick to what is known as the Blue Route, a mile-long trail that hits some of the fortress’ most important points. You start at the ferry landing and follow the blue signs. While Suomenlinna totals eight small islands, only five are connected by bridges or sandbars.

During my visit, I strayed from the Blue Route and wandered wherever whim took me. Every turn on paths and cobblestoned streets brought me to a new sea view or a bunker dug into a hillside.

The site’s six museums feature everything from toys to military history. In some places, you can venture into old buildings. If you’re visiting Helsinki, an afternoon exploring Suomenlinna is a great way to learn some history, enjoy a long walk, and breathe in the fresh sea air.

This Finland one-handed shootout attempt is breaking brains (and goaltenders)

Just because it wasn’t goal doesn’t mean we’re not still in awe

Diehard NHL fans of the mid-aughts might remember the name Teemu Hartikainen.

The 32-year-old forward was the 163rd overall pick of the 2008 NHL draft by the Edmonton Oilers and spent the next few years going back-and-forth between Edmonton and their Oklahoma City affiliate.

In all, Hartikainen played 52 games in the NHL, scoring six goals with seven assists before returning overseas to play in the KHL—though he has won two gold medals at the Olympics and World Championships with Finland.

That lack of production on the NHL stage will no longer be Hartikainen legacy. Not after what he nearly pulled off this weekend with Finland’s national team in a Euro Hockey Tour matchup against Sweden.

After the contest went to a shootout, Hartikainen took the ice and put a dazzling spin on the lacrosse move that features an absurd amount of wrist strength and coordination.

Sweden’s goalie had no chance—and yet Hartikainen couldn’t put the puck past him.

Goodness. That’s the hockey version of “down low, too slow”. The rare shootout attempt that impresses regardless of whether or not he scored.

The way Hartikainen pulls the puck back with one hand while scooping it up off the ice is just beyond belief. The physics of it all barely make sense.

And while Finland lost the shootout (and the game, 4-3), all anyone cares about is what Hartikainen dared to attempt.

After all thanks to Markkanen’s game, Finland managed to make the Eurobasket quarterfinals for the first time since 1967 and he is happy to do it, not only for himself and his team but also about Petteri Koponen who led Finland back to respectability before Markkanen and he is still along for the ride:  “When I made the team in 2015 it felt great and unreal to being in the same locker room with him. Notre Dame alumnus Andrew Peeke heading to world championships

Best of luck to the former Irish captain.

Former Notre Dame defenseman Andrew Peeke’s Columbus Blue Jackets didn’t close to qualifying for this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs. However, all is not lost for him as far as acquiring hardware in 2022. That’s because he will head to Finland and play for the U.S. in this year’s world championships. He last represented the U.S. in the 2018 world junior championships, during which he won a bronze medal.

Peeke just completed his first full season and third overall with the Blue Jackets. He played in all 82 games, and 13 of his 15 points came from assists.

Peeke will be the 17th Notre Dame alumnus to take part in the event. Most recently, Cal Petersen and Matt Hellickson won a bronze with the U.S. in Latvia in 2021.

Peeke played for the Irish from 2016 to 2019 and was their captain during his final year in South Bend. Over three seasons and 119 games, he scored 52 points, 12 of them coming on goals.

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Lauri …

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Lauri Markkanen has been included in Finland’s Defense Forces Sports School list, as noted by BasketNews. Markkanen, 24, is expected to fulfill his military requirement for Finland but is not expected to miss any games for the Cavaliers, who are currently the No. 7 seed in the East with a 14-12 record. “Lauri takes great pride in being from and representing Finland in the NBA,” Markkanen’s agent, Michael Lelchitski of SIG Sports, told HoopsHype in a statement. “One of his civic requirements is serving in the Finnish military. He is prepared to fulfill that duty at the appropriate time.”

Lauri Markkanen to begin military service next April?

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Lauri Markkanen has been included in the Finnish Defense Forces Sports School list, meaning the NBA player may need to serve in the Finnish military. A total of 98 athletes from 20 different sports were selected for the III/22 entry round of the sports school. 82 athletes from 15 sports were selected for the Jaeger Regiment of the Guard, and 16 athletes from five different sports were selected for the Kainuu Brigade.

In general, men in Finland have to go …

In general, men in Finland have to go through military service by the age of 28. Professional athletes are designated to serve in a special ‘Sports School’ unit that is meant to help athletes train while completing their military service. The military service is supposed to start on April 11th, 2022, one day after the NBA regular season ends. The shortest military service to be fulfilled for an athlete is 165 days. It is currently unclear how Markkanen will complete his obligation to the country or if he will serve in the military at all.
