The Final Fantasy 6 remaster is stunning in this new trailer

A classic JPG gets a beautiful new coat of pixelated paint.

Most old-school RPG fans still herald Final Fantasy 6 as the best entry in the series, and a whole new generation is about to see why with the upcoming pixel remaster.

We’ve known the Final Fantasy 6 pixel remaster’s release date for weeks, though it wasn’t until Monday when Square Enix gave everyone a better look at that shiny-new coat of wonderfully pixelated paint. The new trailer showcases what turn-based battles, airship traversal, and suplexing trains are like in motion — all of which look worlds better than the infamously hideous mobile ports from several years ago. Don’t even look that version up, trust me.

Watch the new Final Fantasy 6 pixel remaster trailer for yourself below to see what I mean.

The vocal track you hear in the trailer is called Aria di Mezzo Carattere, which will have seven language options including English, French, German, and Spanish. There are also several new screenshots from the iconic scene in question.

Between this and Chrono Cross: Radical Dreamers Edition, Square Enix is on what is (fingers crossed) a solid re-release kick as of late. Thus far, the company has remastered the first five Final Fantasy titles already, with each garnering loads of praise from fans.

The Final Fantasy 6 pixel remaster will let you suplex trains properly

It’s upside-down or no deal.

Everyone loves a good suplex, especially Final Fantasy 6 fans with fond memories dishing them out during the Phantom Train boss fight.

Last Sunday, Square Enix shared a video of the iconic scene from the upcoming Final Fantasy 6 pixel remaster on Twitter, only to be met with criticism because (please sit down for this) the train wasn’t appearing upside down when the character Sabin performs a suplex! It sounds ridiculous across the board, but fans love the Phantom Train boss fight precisely because it’s so silly. Plus, is it a real suplex if your opponent isn’t going face-first into the ground? I think not, friends!

Take a look at the clip in question for yourself below.

Fans weren’t happy with the pixel remaster’s suplex animation and quickly pointed out the error.

Then on Thursday, Square Enix finally addressed the error.

“We’re still hard at work polishing Final Fantasy VI pixel remaster in time for launch next week, and we saw some of your comments that the Phantom Train didn’t flip during Meteor Strike,” Square Enix said on Twitter. “The video was taken from a pre-release version, and will be adjusted in time for launch!”

So there it is, folks. The Phantom Train will flip upside down during suplexes. All is right with the world once again. Hopefully, Square Enix doesn’t make similar mistakes with the upcoming Chrono Cross: Radical Dreamers Edition.

Here’s a first look at the Final Fantasy 6 remaster

Kefka’s return looms.

Everyone is in the giving mood lately, but perhaps nobody is as gracious as Square Enix for bestowing upon us a sneak peek at the upcoming Final Fantasy 6 remaster.

Like several other series entries getting the remaster treatment before it, the Final Fantasy 6 pixel remaster will give the classic JRPG a fresh coat of graphical paint. It’s  not coming out until February of 2022, but at the very least, we now know one thing: it’s absolutely gorgeous.

Over on Final Fantasy’s  official Twitter account, the team behind the pixel remaster showed off what this version of Final Fantasy 6  looks like in all its Super Nintendo-era goodness. Check it out for yourself below.

Few moments in video games are as iconic as the cold opening to Final Fantasy 6, and the pixel remaster sure has a painterly look that stays true to its original artwork. Here’s to hoping that rumored Chrono Cross  remake looks even half as good as this.

There’s no solid release date for this re-release of Final Fantasy 6  yet, but Square Enix has done a marvelous job with the pixel remasters of Final Fantasy 4  and Final Fantasy 5  that the wait will likely be worth it.

Final Fantasy 6’s pixel remaster comes out in February 2022

Kefka is coming back.

Few JRPG enthusiasts would dispute the importance of Final Fantasy 6, and the pixel remaster is nearly upon us.

Slowly but steadily, Square Enix is remastering many classic mainline Final Fantasy games. Both Final Fantasy 4  and Final Fantasy 5  got stunning touch-ups recently, but most people are eager to hear more about the pixel remaster for Final Fantasy 6. Well, Square Enix finally gave us some details on we can expect Kefka’s return.

The Final Fantasy 6  pixel remaster will release in February 2022. A reminder that this version of the game is only available on Steam for now.

“In order to bring you the best experience possible, we’re giving ourselves the necessary time to apply final polish while finishing development on the game,” Square Enix said  on Twitter. “We’re looking forward to sharing the final title in our pixel remaster series with you all early next year and we hope you’re looking forward to it.”

There are still no screenshots or videos of this version of Final Fantasy 6, but if Final Fantasy 5  pixel remaster is any indication, it’ll be gorgeous.

Square Enix also let everyone know what pre-order goodies are coming with the Final Fantasy 6 pixel remaster.

  • Locke’s Theme (Timelapse Remix)
  • The Decisive Battle (Timelapse Remix)
  • Terra’s Theme (Timelapse Remix)
  • Searching for Friends (Timelapse Remix)
  • Aria di Mezzo Carattere (Instrumental)
  • [Final Fantasy 6]: 2 types of wallpapers
  • [Final Fantasy 1-6]: 2 types of pixel remastered series wallpapers

It’s great to see classic JRPGs get this sort of care from Square Enix. Now of only they would let that stunning Final Fantasy 9  fan remaster or rumored  Chrono Cross  remake  see the light of day.
