Why Morocco is listed as ‘MAR’ during the World Cup on television

Here’s your answer!

As you’re watching Morocco play at the 2022 World Cup, you may look up at the score bug on your television coverage — this time around it’s on FOX — and wondered: Why is the abbreviation for the country “MAR”? Shouldn’t it be “MOR” because, you know, those are the three letters Morocco starts with?

Nope! And there’s a good reason why that’s the case.

Morocco is spelled that way in English. But in French — Morocco became independent from France in 1956 — it’s Maroc. And that’s where you get your “MAR” from that you see in the World Cup scoring bug.

4 World Cup teams who shockingly made it through the group stages, including Australia

Some big surprises here.

We’ve covered the heartache for some highly-ranked teams who were among the possibly favorites at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar — the group of national squads that didn’t make it past the group stages that included Germany and Belgium.

So let’s do something else and flip it to the other side. There were some teams who weren’t that highly rated that qualified for the round of 16 knockout stages by finishing top-two in their groups.

You could see what it meant to those teams when they realized they had made it, the emotions pouring out. It’s incredible to see.

So let’s run through some of the more surprising teams who made it through:

Richarlison de Andrade’s stunning bicycle kick goal for Brazil is the World Cup’s best yet

WHAT A GOAL!

The 2022 World Cup has already had some surprising moments in its first week and now we have the goal of the tournament thanks to Richarlison de Andrade.

Brazil beat Serbia 2-0 in Thursday’s Group G match thanks to Richarlison’s two goals. After a scoreless first half, Richarlison got things started for Brazil in the 62nd minute with the opening tally. But what got fans really going was Richarlison’s second of the match, where he doubled the score for Brazil in the most spectacular fashion.

In the 72nd minute, Richarlison touched a centering pass up to himself before finishing with a gorgeous bicycle kick for the tally past goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

What an individual effort there from Richarlison to make that play for the score. The goal looks even better from multiple angles as well.

Thanks to Richarlison’s two goals, Brazil is 1-0-0 in the World Cup so far, holding the first spot in Group G ahead of their Monday game against Switzerland.
