Browns waive QB Felix Harper a week after signing him

Just over a week after signing him, the Browns waive the young QB:

It looks like the story of QB Felix Harper’s time with the Cleveland Browns will be short-lived. Last week, the Browns announced signing Harper after his rookie minicamp tryout.

Among the list of undrafted free agents brought in for a tryout was another quarterback, Felix Harper. The Alcorn State product has spent time this offseason working out under the guidance of Quincy Avery alongside former Cleveland QB Tyrod Taylor and Watson.

Harper was in attendance for the team’s rookie minicamp but was not among the 12 undrafted players signed prior. A week after signing Harper, and with no official activities since, Cleveland has waived the young quarterback:

The Browns reached an agreement with DE Jadeveon Clowney yesterday but had a roster spot available that they did not need to waive anyone.

With Harper moving on, Cleveland still has Deshaun Watson, Baker Mayfield, Jacoby Brissett and Josh Dobbs at the quarterback spot. Mayfield will not attend OTAs but is still on the roster.

Browns waive Julius Faulk, terminate Tre Harbison, make QB signing official

One of the 12 undrafted free agents signed is already gone, Harper’s signing is official and a running back clears waivers:

The NFL’s official transaction wire is quite busy this time of the year. The Cleveland Browns made three moves, officially, as a part of Monday’s wire.

First, Cleveland’s signing of QB Felix Harper official. Harper, who worked out with Deshaun Watson this summer, is the team’s fifth quarterback on their 90-man roster. He is a longshot with Watson, Jacoby Brissett, Josh Dobbs and, seemingly for now, Baker Mayfield on the depth chart ahead of him.

Second, the team waived DB Julius Faulk. Faulk was one of the team’s 12 undrafted free agents signed before rookie minicamp but was released shortly after the completion of camp this weekend. Roster space was discussed this morning on the Browns Wire Podcast.

Finally, RB Tre Harbison was terminated through the waiver system after no one claimed him off waivers. Harbison suffered a concussion in his first padded practice with the team in 2021 and didn’t see the field.

Browns sign QB Felix Harper after rookie minicamp tryout

The Browns add a fifth quarterback to their 90-man roster, leaving just two spots open. Harper worked out with Deshaun Watson this offseason:

The two biggest stories of the Cleveland Browns offseason have revolved around quarterbacks. The pursuit of Deshaun Watson caused Baker Mayfield to request a trade. The acquisition of Watson, with his pending civil lawsuits, has created both excitement and consternation while Mayfield remains on the team’s roster.

The Browns also signed Jacoby Brissett and added Josh Dobbs to the quarterback room.

Harper was in attendance for the team’s rookie minicamp but was not among the 12 undrafted players signed prior. Sunday, the team announced that they have now signed him to the roster:

Harper (5-10, 180) is an undrafted rookie out Alcorn State. He led the Alcorn football team to a 6-2 SWAC record in 2021, completing 191 passes for 2,489 yards and 20 passing touchdowns. A native of Fairburn, Ga., Harper posted a 147.1 QBR on the year.

The left-handed throwing Harper provides the Browns another arm to use in camp and a chance to see if he can develop. It is unlikely he will make the team’s 53-man roster but could fight for a spot on the practice squad.

With the signing of Harper, Cleveland currently has 88 members signed to their 90-man roster. If Andrew Berry wants to bring in more than two other free agents, a contracted player will have to be cut.
