Lamar Jackson nominated for FedEx Air award for Week 1 performance

After throwing for 275 yards and 3 TDs posting the highest passer rating of Week 1, Ravens QB Lamar Jackson is up for the FedEx Air Award

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson picked up right where he left off last regular season. In the first game of the season (preseason or regular season) for Baltimore, Jackson lit up the scoreboard and the stat sheet in a 38-6 rout of the Cleveland Browns.

For his efforts, Jackson was nominated for the FedEx Air award alongside Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. It’s now up to the fans to decide which player wins this week’s award through voting.

Jackson completed 20-of-25 attempts (80%) for 275 yards and three touchdowns to no interceptions. He showed poise in the pocket, more consistent mechanics, perfect touch, and a cannon for an arm on a deep completion to wide receiver Marquise Brown. While this wouldn’t necessarily count toward the award, Jackson also ran the ball seven times for 45 yards. Though Jackson had fewer touchdowns and passing yards, he posted the highest passer rating of Week 1, topping both Rodgers and Wilson.

Jackson was a frequent nominee last season becoming the only NFL player to ever win both the ground and air awards in a single season. He ended up winning the FedEx Air Player of the Year last season alongside his MVP award.

Drew Brees is NFC Offensive Player of the Week, up for other awards

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees earned recognition as NFC Offensive Player of the Week after breaking records in prime-time.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees turned in a stunning performance in prime-time against the Indianapolis Colts, and his efforts earned recognition as the NFC Offensive Player of the Week.

Brees passed several milestones during Monday night’s game, including the all-time career touchdown passes record and the single-game completion percentage record. He completed 29 of 30 passes (96.7%) for 307 yards through the air, scoring four touchdowns along the way and raising his career total to 541. If those sky-high numbers for both efficiency and volume don’t encapsulate everything that makes Brees great, nothing will.

It’s the 25th time Brees has received this award. His Saints teammates have been recognized for these weekly awards on five different occasions in 2019:

  • Week 1: Wil Lutz, Special Teams Player of the Week
  • Week 3: Thomas Morstead, Special Teams Player of the Week
  • Week 6: Thomas Morstead, Special Teams Player of the Week
  • Week 13: Cameron Jordan, Defensive Player of the Week
  • Week 15: Drew Brees, Offensive Player of the Week

Additionally, Brees is up for consideration in the fan voting for the FedEx Air and Ground Awards. He’s up against some quality competition, with quarterbacks who either threw more touchdown passes (Lamar Jackson) or passed for more yards (Jameis Winston) crowding the Week 15 ballot. Saints fans can vote for Brees on NFL.com at this link.

Lamar Jackson nominated for FedEx Air Player for Week 10

Thanks to another perfect passer rating, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has been nominated for another FedEx Air Player of the Week award

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson had a perfect game in Week 10 against the Cincinnati Bengals. No, seriously — Jackson had a perfect 158.3 passer rating. That has him in the running for the FedEx Air Player of the Week award.

It’s the second time this season Jackson has been nominated for the FedEx Air award, winning it in Week 1 for his other game with a perfect passer rating. But Jackson has also won the FedEx Ground Player of the Week award this season — making him the only player ever to win both awards in a single season.

Jackson has some tough competition this week, going up against Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. While Jackson has half the passing yards of Mahomes and fewer touchdown passes than Jones, he was the only player with a perfect passer rating in Week 10.

Jackson completed 15-of-17 passes against the Cincinnati Bengals for 223 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. While Jackson technically threw two incomplete passes in that game, one was a spike to stop the clock before halftime.

With how much criticism Jackson has gotten for his passing ability in his short career, it’s a little redeeming to see him up for yet another award specifically due to his arm.
