MLS was, even by MLS standards, completely bonkers Saturday night

Summer in MLS can be a rough time. You’re too far away from the real pressure of making or missing the playoffs, it’s hot and humid everywhere, teams are figuring it out after transfer window moves. It can feel very much like everyone’s biding their time for September and October.

Not August 6. MLS Madness™ took hold in nearly every corner of the country, with goals galore, teams scoring and conceding in the deepest depths of stoppage time, big-name stars scoring bangers, and everyone basically went bananas. It was a perfect advertisement for the league: fun, flawed, weird, and inexplicable.

For one thing, MLS broke a league record for goals scored in one night. Across 13 games Saturday night, teams combined for 57 goals, an average of well over four per game. The old record of 46 was left in the dust.

As the league itself once said, This Stuff Kicks!

The forward was emotional after the game, saying that his mother-in-law is dying of cancer

FC Dallas star Paul Arriola dedicated his goal against the LA Galaxy to his cancer-stricken mother-in-law, saying after the game that it could have been the last time she ever sees him play.

Arriola revealed a shirt that said “F––– CANCER” after his goal and, in an emotional interview after the game, said his mother-in-law is dying of the disease.

“My mother-in-law is dying of cancer,” Arriola told reporters. “Today could be the last time she ever sees me play. For me, it was tough but I wanted to send a message. Not only to her, but to everybody, to just keep fighting.”

Arriola scored the second goal for FC Dallas in a 3-1 away win, with his fellow USMNT forward Jesus Ferreira getting the other two goals.

The win pushed FC Dallas into second place in the Western Conference, with the club having six wins, four draws and one loss in its opening 11 matches.

Tras confirmarse el positivo de nueve jugadores de plantilla del Nashville SC, la decisión ha sido retirarse del torneo MLS is Back de manera oficial, algo que dejó devastados a los jugadores según el propio CEO del equipo Ian Ayre en conferencia de prensa.

“No creo que sorprenda a nadie saber que, al igual que nosotros, todos estaban devastados por tener que retirarse del torneo”, comentó Ayre tras el retiro del torneo.

Al respecto el comisionado de la MLS, Don Garber habló para TUDN explicando la situación del torneo y sobre todo las emociones que deja en la organización el retiro de dos equipos.

“De los 26 equipos llegaron 2 que tuvieron demasiados positivos y no nos sentimos cómodos con dejarles participar”, dijo Don Garber.

Y es que la MLS ha seguido al pie de la letra el protocolo de sanidad establecido para que se realice el torneo de buena forma, sin exponer a los futbolistas a contagios con la idea de regresar a la actividad, que los jugadores vuelvan a sentir la pelota, los entrenadores dirijan y los aficionados se emocionen con los compromisos.

Esperemos que se hayan terminado las sorpresas en este MLS is Back y el torneo pueda continuar de manera normal pues todos extrañamos el futbol de vuelta en nuestras vidas.

FC Dallas isn’t as fortunate, as they’re dealing with a bevy of injuries at midfield. While it’s a position of strength for Dallas, they’ll do well to grab a draw in this opener against the visitors in this battle of postseason teams from last year.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 2.5 (+110) is also a value play in this one, as both teams get their sea legs. Look for a slow start, perhaps even a scoreless draw in the first half, before the teams discover their offense. This game won’t be mistaken for a track meet, that’s for sure. We have had three clean sheets in the past five meetings between these two clubs.
