2020 NFL Draft: Fantasy football Day 3 recap

Keeping tabs on which skill position guys will make an impact in 2020 fantasy football.

The first two exciting days are behind us, and we’ll focus here on which players coming out of the final day of the 2020 NFL Draft figure to have the most immediate value in fantasy football.

[lawrence-related id=449915,449904]

Round 4

(Vasha Hunt, USA TODAY Sports)

112) RB Joshua Kelley, Los Angeles Chargers: For as good as Austin Ekeler has been in spurts during his career, we haven’t see how he will hold up to a consistent pounding. Justin Jackson is there to help share the load, but he is even more untested. Kelley was the backbone of the UCLA offense the last two years and could work his way up the depth chart in a hurry, especially if an injury creeps into play. More likely, though, he’s a nifty stash buy in dynasty setups.

2020 NFL Draft: Day 2 fantasy football recap

Rounds 2 and 3 offer a wealth of fantasy football prospects.

The 2020 NFL Draft’s Day 1 is in the books, and there are plenty of players who will make great fantasy football additions still on the board.

Fantasy football draft season may not be close to hitting its crescendo, but hardcore gamers have been selecting players prior to the conclusion of bowl season. Join us for real-time analysis the NFL draft’s second day’s impact on fantasy football plans for 2020.

Round 2

(USA TODAY Sports Images)

33) WR Tee Higgins, Cincinnati Bengals: No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow gets a new target in the lanky Higgins. His body control is exceptional, and few receivers have a catch radius to match Higgins’. While he lacks the breakaway speed, Higgins can catch the ball anywhere, in any situation, with the best of them. He will have the difficulty of learning an NFL offense without OTAs and possibly no training camp, which is tougher for a receiver. Having A.J. Green to mentor him is a huge plus. Higgins may struggle to see the field as more than a situational player in 2020, barring a personnel change or injury, although the future beyond his rookie year positions him as a potential low-tier WR1 in fantasy.

(Ron Chenoy, USA TODAY Sports)

34) WR Michael Pittman Jr., Indianapolis Colts: Pittman has Mike Evans-like traits and joins an offense that desperately needs help for T.Y. Hilton. The son of 11-year NFL running back Michael Pittman, the younger comes into the pros as one of the most decorated receivers in USC history. Philip Rivers gains a dangerous threat in the red zone, and the Colts now have another talented second-rounder (Parris Campbell last year) to fill out the top three wideouts. Pittman’s skill set profiles as a reception hog at the next level, suggesting crazy upside in PPR leagues as soon as 2021. His rookie year may be rocky, given the lack of an organized offseason, but don’t write him off. Pittman Jr. has late-round flier value as a rook.

(Brett Davis, USA TODAY Sports)

35) RB D’Andre Swift, Detroit Lions: The Motor City gets the top back in the draft and one whose explosiveness is going to make an immediate impact in this offense. He’ll mix in with Kerryon Johnson, but it may be only a matter of time before Swift takes over one way or another. KJ has missed 12 games in the last two years and doesn’t offer the dynamic traits of Swift. Running back is among the easiest positions to learn in the NFL, and Swift’s pass-catching talents allow him to be utilized as a satellite player until he gets the nuances down. Darrell Bevell’s offense has produced several elite fantasy seasons at the position through the years, and Swift’s dynamic ways will have the veteran play-caller scheming up new plays. PPR gamers will find more value in the Georgia star — who has basically no mileage on the engine. Swift is an RB3 or flex in 2020, and he has potential for much more with Johnson’s injury history.

The fantasy football impact of the 2020 NFL draft first round

Some big names were taken on Thursday.

Yes, fantasy football is months away.

But with not a lot going on in the sports world, you can start thinking about it now, with the first round of the 2020 NFL draft completed.

There were a bunch of picks that changed things from a fantasy perspective on Thursday night, and we’re here to break those down, from new quarterbacks to receivers who could make an impact from Day 1 for the teams that took them to the running back that already has folks buzzing about his potential.

Here’s a look at the first rounders who owners should start thinking about when it’s fantasy draft season in the fall:

The Bengals take QB Joe Burrow with the No. 1 pick

Quarterback, as I tell you every year, is the deepest position. So I’m not going to target a rookie on a bad team early on or THAT late. That said, there’s a good group of skill players on offense in Cincy led by A.J. Green and Tyler Boyd, so maybe there’s some upside later on in the year when Burrow gets comfortable.

That said, I’m not drafting him unless it’s in a deep keeper league, and I’m keeping expectations for Green, Boyd, and John Ross about the same that I had when Andy Dalton was under center.

(Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

The Dolphins take QB Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 pick

It’s the same as with Burrow, except the Alabama product might not get a chance to start for a while with Ryan Fitzpatrick is there. So I’m not taking him in a draft unless it’s a mega-deep dynasty league.

The Chargers take QB Justin Herbert with the No. 6 pick

Same as the other two. Seems like Tyrod Taylor will start and Herbert might be under center later in the year. Avoid Herbert in drafts.

The Raiders take Henry Ruggs with the No. 12 pick

Yes, the Raiders need a receiver. But will Ruggs end up being more of a big play threat than a high-volume guy?

That’s my guess. I think Darren Waller, Tyrell Williams and Hunter Renfrow eat up more targets and Ruggs gets some deep balls and runs. Maybe that takes away volume from Williams and Renfrow, but in PPR leagues, I’m higher on Renfrow getting the short balls from Derek Carr. I personally don’t love drafting for big plays and low volume, but if you like the DeSean Jacksons of this world, he could be an intriguing bench candidate later in drafts.

The Broncos take WR Jerry Jeudy with the No. 15 pick.

Denver has Courtland Sutton as its top receiver, and that won’t change after he broke out with Drew Lock last year. I see Jeudy as an immediate No. 2, with tight end Noah Fant getting a bump in volume too.

That’s a pretty interesting situation to walk in to, and after last year’s rookie wide receiver class had a bunch of breakouts, I’m willing to take a late flier on Jeudy to see if he can replicate some of that.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Cowboys take WR CeeDee Lamb with the No. 17 pick

Oh, Jerry Jones. You see a weapon like Lamb and you can’t resist.

It’s a good move on paper, but he’ll be fighting for receptions in his rookie year with Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup, plus Ezekiel Elliott catches passes, too. Barring an injury to one of the names above, I’ll probably pass on Lamb in re-draft leagues and leave him on the waiver wire.

The Eagles take WR Jalen Reagor with the No. 21 pick

Yes, the Eagles need wide receiver help. But Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson are still there … for now, plus Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert compete for catches. As it stands, I’ll wait until 2021 to give Reagor a look.

The Vikings take WR Justin Jefferson with the No. 22 pick

Stefon Diggs? He’s in Buffalo now. That means he could be behind Adam Thielen and perhaps Tajae Sharpe when it comes to targets. But with Diggs gone, there’s a void that needs to be filled. So I’ll deem Jefferson a late sleeper you might use one of your last picks on.

The 49ers take WR Brandon Aiyuk with the No. 25 pick

In San Francisco, it’s George Kittle first and Deebo Samuel next. And then there’s a glut of receivers including Kendrick Bourne, who we keep hearing about. Does that mean Aiyuk is destined to be buried his first year? Possibly. I’m not high on his prospects in 2020.

The Packers take QB Jordan Love with the No. 26 pick

Aaron Rodgers isn’t going anywhere for a while. So it may be a while until Love is both fantasy and real football relevant.

The Chiefs take RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the No. 32 pick

OOOOOOO. The fantasy buzz is there with good reason. Damien Williams will be the starter, but the younger and more dynamic Edwards-Helaire — who caught 55 passes last year for LSU — could usurp him. He’s going to be a sleeper who could end up paying off huge dividends, because we know what Andy Reid can do with young running back talent in a high-powered offense.

2020 NFL Draft: Day 1 fantasy football recap

Sorting through all of the new additions to the 2020 fantasy football draft pool.

While the settings and feel aren’t familiar, the hype and excitement surrounding the 2020 NFL Draft are recognizable from a mile away.

Fantasy football draft season may not be close to hitting its crescendo, but hardcore gamers have been selecting players prior to the conclusion of bowl season. Join us for real-time analysis the NFL draft’s opening round’s impact on fantasy football plans for 2020.

Round 1

(Mark J. Rebilas, USA TODAY Sports)

1) QB Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals: He’ll have a reasonably talented stable of weapons around him for being a No. 1 overall choice. Typically, the cupboard is barren in this situation. A.J. Green returns to health after missing 2019, and Tyler Boyd has shown to be quite capable in his own right. Speed isn’t a problem with John Ross, and even Auden Tate flashed potential a season ago. The offensive line is slowly rebuilding its way back to respectability, and a healthy return of last year’s first-round pick, Jonah Williams, will play a major role in this process. RBs Joe Mixon and Giovani Bernard are both assets in the passing game, as well, and stability in the backfield will go a long way in protecting Burrow. The toughest thing working against him is the uncertainty of the offseason and whether he’ll have any semblance of a conventional training camp. In the absolute best-case scenario, Burrow is a low-tier fantasy QB2 as a rookie. He’s best left on the wire in single-year leagues, though.

Rookie Rundown: WR Tyler Johnson, Minnesota

Tyler Johnson’s numbers speak for themselves, but a lack of athleticism vs. NFL competition may limit his potential.

(Jesse Johnson, USA TODAY Sports)

Minnesota wide receiver Tyler Johnson is coming off of two of the most complete seasons over the past two years, displaying a wide array of abilities along the way.

In 2017, as a sophomore, Johnson missed two games with a hand injury and still earned an honorable mention for the All-Big Ten team after landing seven touchdowns. He exploded the next season, going for 78-1,169-12 and receiving first-team All-Big Ten recognition. If setting school records for receiving yards and scores weren’t enough, Johnson’s 2019 campaign saw him break his own marks and claim another first-team conference honor.

Height: 6-foot-1
Weight: 206 pounds
40 time: 4.55 seconds (estimated)

The former high school quarterback wasted little time figuring out the wide receiver position at the collegiate level and enters the 2020 NFL Draft with an alluring blend of traits.

While Johnson isn’t a burner, he has enough speed to stay ahead of most defenders against whom he has a step. Averaging 15-plus yards per grab over the past three seasons for the Golden Gophers should be satisfying enough to most detractors. That said, speed isn’t his game, nor should it be overtly held against him.

Pros

  • Insanely competitive — cannot teach fortitude and determination of his degree
  • Instinctual, especially in traffic — body control and sense of timing are among the draft’s best
  • Highly productive once given the chance
  • Background in basketball is evident in his ability to fight for a contested catch and box-out defenders
  • Excellent hands and focus
  • Has a good feel for route concepts and nuances, such as when to return to his quarterback
  • Tough to take down after the catch despite not being particularly elusive
  • Effort blocker
  • Plays up to his potential within his skill set — an example would be how well he exploits zone coverage vs. man
  • Time as a quarterback helps him understand defenses pre- and post-snap
  • Far better football player than athlete, which tends to get lost on some evaluators

[lawrence-related id=449657]

Cons

  • Lacks elite physical skills and isn’t going to “wow” too many people in comparison to top-end NFL receivers
  • Separation windows tend to be small
  • Needs to improve burst coming out of a break
  • May be system-limited as a possession receiver vs. zone coverage

Fantasy football outlook

Johnson reminds of Tennessee Titans WR A.J. Brown, whose rookie season couldn’t have gone much better, all things considered. There’s maybe some Marvin Jones and even a little Anquan Boldin to be found in his game, too. Jones is probably the best NFL comparison, though — similar traits in the red zone and tracking the ball, occasionally flashing just enough athleticism after lulling a defender to sleep.

The senior receiver likely comes off of the board no earlier than Round 4 but is more reasonably a Round 5 or 6 pick. At any rate, climbing into Day 2 will require the right coaching and system fits.

Johnson, depending upon where he lands, ranges from being an intermittent Year 1 fantasy football option to a name gamers stash for 2021.

Fantasy football stunner: Rob Gronkowski unretires, traded to Bucs

Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski are reunited in sunny Tampa. Fantasy owners should rejoice.

I don’t think many people smelled what the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were cookin’ in the past few hours. Star tight end Rob Gronkowski not only unretired after a year hiatus but is traded to the Bucs and reunited with Tom Brady.

What a time to be alive.

Per Schefter, Tampa is the only place Gronk wanted to play. The ESPN insider credited the NFL star turned WWE wrestler’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, as saying the tight end will honor his one-year, $10 million deal at this time.

So, where does that leave everything for fantasy football purposes?

  • Gronkowski visibly lost considerable muscle mass in his year off, but reports say he’s training hard to get into football shape. Given all of his injuries, it may behoove him to remain on the leaner side. Gronk is one of the best blocking tight ends of the past few decades, if not ever, and the loss of mass could come into play in how the team opts to utilize him. He may be flexed out wide more often than ever.
  • Buccaneers tight end O.J. Howard never fit the system and was in the doghouse most of 2019. Count on Tampa trading the young talent between now and the end of the draft. Could Howard remain on the team? It’s not outlandish, but it would be purely in an insurance role should Gronk fall to injury.
  • Presuming Howard is indeed traded (or is even released), the Buccaneers have veteran Cameron Brate on the roster, as well. He’s versatile and is a better blocker than Howard. Look for plenty of Brate on the field, although him seeing targets of consequence is a different tale.
  • In 2020, Tom Brady will have Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Ronald Jones and Gronk catching passes from him. The offensive line is solid, outside of right tackle, which should be a high priority in the draft. Running back also may be addressed to help complement Jones and build depth.

Fantasy football takeaway

One has to give Gronkowski the benefit of the doubt, even if he doesn’t get a formal offseason of preparation with his new team. He and Brady can play catch in the dark and still school most defenders. There is a major worry of injury with Gronk, and it’s fair to pencil in him missing at least a couple of contests. On the other side of that coin, losing some bulk is easier on his frame, and the year away should have helped him health in general.

This makes him a No. 1 fantasy tight end by default, and the fun-loving star is poised shine in his new city. There’s an intriguing blend of upside and proven returns that isn’t often found in a soon-to-be 31-year-old tight end.

Gronk’s return secures Brady as no worse than a low-tier starting quarterback, regardless of the risks associated with either player. As for Godwin and Evans, but are WR1 talents but may be occasionally game planned out of fantasy success due to all of the talent in this offense. Furthermore, it is unclear as to which receiver will have Brady’s eye the most. We’ll take a deeper dive after the draft and examine the ripple effect throughout the entire offense.

Rookie Rundown: RB James Robinson, Illinois State

James Robinson continued to improve at the collegiate level and now enters the NFL fray with upside galore.

Illinois State running back James Robinson brings a quiet, steady back to the NFL mix with versatility traits that are bound to get him on a team’s roster before all is said and done.

The Redbirds star entered the program in 2016 as the state’s all-time leading high school rusher with a shade over 9,000 yards, and Robinson ranked fourth in the nation for prep rushing scores at 158 when he graduated high school. After being used sparingly in his first two seasons at Illinois State, Robinson was given an opportunity to shine in 2017, and he never looked back.

After leading the school in rushing as a sophomore, Robinson earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors as a first-team selection. He’d go on to become a finalist for the Walter Payton Award in 2018, also adding third-team All-American recognition to his second straight all-conference selection. His senior year concluded with honors for being all-conference yet again, and this time Robinson was voted to the first-team All-American squad.

Despite such an impressive resume and climb to national prominence in 2019, Robinson isn’t bound to be one of the first running backs chosen in the NFL draft. In fact, he may not hear his name called until late on Day 3, but there’s some potential for going as early as the late third round.

Pros

  • Dynamic ability to find lanes and make the necessary moves to get there
  • Excellent vision and feel for a play’s development — anticipatory senses are NFL caliber
  • Extremely productive three straight seasons and has three-down traits
  • Quality blend of burst, elusiveness, jump-cut ability and enough power
  • Known for his work ethic and reliability as a teammate
  • Patience is among the first things that jump off the screen, especially when he’s waiting for blockers to find their target
  • Capable receiver despite not being utilized much in this area
  • Played in a mixed offensive system that included elements of pro-style football
  • Among the better incoming backs at blitz pickup
  • Plays faster in the open field than he times

Cons

  • Ran through holes the size of Texas in college — will he have the quickness to hit the gaps in the NFL before they close?
  • Lacks breakaway speed in shorts
  • Considerable mileage with more than 600 touches in the last two years
  • Needs to address his tendency to bounce a play outside, which is a common issue and can be corrected via coaching
  • Limited skill set and athleticism that could expose him at times in the NFL

Fantasy football outlook

Robinson’s talents and determination will get him on the field in 2020, although how much is anyone’s guess. His landing spot wide open at this time, and the supporting cast will make a huge difference in what kind of workload one can expect from him.

The vast majority of scenarios put Robinson in a rotation or even riding the pine and hoping for a shot. For now, he’s roster depth fantasy football versions, but consider his value to be quite fluid given the significant range in teams that could pursue Robinson.
