Report: Chiefs had multiple false-positive COVID-19 tests early this morning

FOX’s Jay Glazer says the Chiefs had 7 false-positive COVID-19 tests that led to a disruptive early morning.

Several members of the Kansas City Chiefs had an interesting early morning ahead of their Week 13 game with the Denver Broncos.

According to a report from FOX NFL Sunday’s Jay Glazer, the Chiefs were notified of seven positive COVID-19 tests at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. Among them were several members of the coaching staff, leaving a large concern of whether the team would have enough coaches for the game.

The positive test results required vigorous contact tracing and retesting to be done. The team would later learn that all of the positive results were actually false-positive tests due to an error at the lab where they were processed.

Obviously, the good news is that these tests were false-positive and the team won’t have any COVID-19 issues heading into “Sunday Night Football.” The bad news is that this was likely a very disruptive early morning for members of the coaching staff and possibly some players. Thankfully, this week the Chiefs are playing an evening game. The team has some time to get a little extra rest ahead of their game with the Broncos. It serves as yet another reminder of some of the strange challenges that teams face during this season impacted by COVID-19.

Update: Saints COVID-19 test was false positive, Lions kickoff is on

The New Orleans Saints confirmed a false positive test result for a COVID-19 infection before their Week 4 kickoff against the Detroit Lions

The New Orleans Saints were sent in a minor panic late Saturday night upon learning that one of the players in their traveling party, fullback Michael Burton, had tested positive for COVID-19 before joining them on the team plane. Burton was immediately re-tested to check for a false positive, and the four players nearest to him in transit — including running back Alvin Kamara — were also given rapid point-of-care tests to see if any infections had spread.

But early Sunday morning The Athletic’s Katherine Terrell reported that Burton’s second test returned a negative result, which means he initially received a false positive. This was confirmed by NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill, who reported that each of the other four Saints players also returned negative results.

It’s the fourth false positive test the Saints have received this year, after Deonte Harris, Kaden Elliss, and Chase Hansen were sidelined for a few days in training camp while awaiting additional test results. There were concerns that false positive results could hurt a team during the season, and they nearly did; but that’s just part of trying to play football amid a public health crisis.

So now we’re looking to see how the Saints play when they play against the Lions at Ford Field. Kickoff is scheduled for noon CT on Fox.

Daily COVID-19 testing paying off for Seahawks with no positive tests

The Seattle Seahawks made it through training camp and the first two weeks of the 2020 NFL regular season without a positive COVID-19 test.

The Seattle Seahawks have managed to get through training camp and nearly two full weeks of the regular NFL season without a single positive COVID-19 test. While wide receiver John Ursua did have a false-positive early on, the Seahawks have been diligent in preventing a coronavirus outbreak.

“It’s a really big deal,” coach Pete Carroll said during his Friday press conference. “It’s a really big deal in that this is kind of like stage two of the process of figuring it out. We figured out camp, our guys did a marvelous job – all the people that contributed to the process in the procedure to get that done in camp was fantastic. Then we went on the road for the first time, there’s a ton of stuff that you got to go through to orchestrate that thing, and we orchestrated it to where we made it all the way to, here on Friday, with all negative tests again. So that’s a major accomplishment.”

Carroll was sure to caution that it is still very early on in the year and not the time to let the guards down. Road games will remain tough challenges with the number of people traveling and the logistics of the trips. After Sunday night, there are still 14 more games for Seattle in the 2020 regular season.

“We haven’t made through, everybody’s got to get to the first couple weeks on the road and at home to figure out their process and how it works and fits and all that,” Carroll continued. “But yeah, I think I’m surprised in general that there’s so few positive tests happening around the league with all the people that are testing. It does show you, though, that the focus of testing every day has really brought our attention to the details that it takes to pull this off, and I think that’s a big part of it.”

The Seahawks will square off against the Patriots at home Week 2 with no fans in the stands, just another way to keep everyone healthy. Seattle is hoping its streak of negative tests (and wins!) continues on Sunday.

Seahawks John Ursua says his 1st COVID-19 test was false positive

Seahawks wide receiver John Ursua says his first COVID-19 test was actually a false positive and he has now had two negative tests in a row.

The Seattle Seahawks hadn’t had a single player test positive for the coronavirus through the first two weeks of training camp until wide receiver John Ursua received his results early Sunday morning.

Ursua was immediately placed on the NFL’s Reserve/COVID-19 list and began isolating in his hotel room. He took a second test on Sunday and was delivered a negative result on Monday. He has now received a second negative test in a row.

“Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers my test was a false positive I do not have the virus,” Ursua posted on his Instagram account early on Tuesday.

With the news of the false-positive test, the Seahawks remain one of the few teams in the league to have no players or staff battling the coronavirus.

Seattle players are now set to take to the field on Wednesday for the first real practice session of this year’s training camp.
