Amazon releases first look at Fallout TV show

Here’s a quick look at Fallout’s television debut.

There’s been much excitement surrounding Amazon’s upcoming Fallout TV series, and the first-ever teaser image just dropped.

As part of the Fallout 25th Anniversary celebrations, Prime Video released a promotional shot from the show on Tuesday. It’s clearly from within one of the many Vault dwellings, and an ominous figure stands far off. Two people with Vault 33 jumpsuits are looking on closer at the camera. Hard to say what’s happening story-wise, but the iconography is on-point.

Check out the image for yourself below. Look closely, and you’ll see someone lying on the floor – presumably dead since this is Fallout.

Not a pip-boy in sight though, I’m afraid.

It’s almost a shame that a contextless picture is all we have to go on, but this isn’t surprising since the show only recently went into production. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy of Westworld fame are the lead writers on Fallout. Bethesda’s own Todd Howard is one of several producers on the show, and it will star Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, and many more. Set photos from the show leaked earlier this year but have since vanished.

If all this gets you in the mood for post-apocalyptic adventures, Fallout 4 is getting a new-generation patch soon.

Fallout: New Vegas studio would ‘love’ to make another one

Obsidian co-founder Feargus Urquhart is all-for making more Fallout.

There’s little debate about which Fallout game is the best — almost everyone agrees it’s New Vegas. Developer Obsidian hasn’t worked on the series since that title, but would “love to” make another.

In an interview DualShockers, Obsidian co-founder Feargus Urquhart spoke about the possibility of making a Fallout: New Vegas follow-up.

“Of course, if we ever got the opportunity to make another Fallout game, we’d make it,” Urquhart said. “There’s not even a question of whether or not we would do it – it’s just ‘Will the opportunity arise?'”

Many people hope this dream comes to fruition, and it’s not all that unlikely since Microsoft now owns both Obsidian and Bethesda. Earlier this year, rumors suggested that all three parties were discussing the possibility of Fallout: New Vegas 2. However, nothing has come of those whispers since.

[mm-video type=video id=01fneweg9c4wk5v2c2c9 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fneweg9c4wk5v2c2c9/01fneweg9c4wk5v2c2c9-a0465eb771466761de4c34fc9ceabc05.jpg]

“If we were to do Fallout, it has to tie in with what Bethesda is doing with Fallout and a lot of other things,” Urquhart continues. “But I would always personally say my hope is that before I ride off into the sunset, I’d love to make another Fallout game.”

Bethesda is already planning another Fallout, but it’s coming after Elder Scrolls 6 — which won’t happen until Starfield releases. So it’s going to be a long wait.

Fallout 3 is the next Epic free game

Fallout 3 is free on Epic Games for a week, just in time to celebrate the classic RPG’s birthday

Epic unveiled the next Epic free game, and it’s a rather timely one. From Oct. 20, 2022, through Oct. 27, 2022, you can get Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition for absolutely nothing on the Epic Games Store. It marks the debut of Bethesda’s classic RPG series on the Epic Games Store, and the announcement of the free PC game comes just as Fallout 3 is celebrating its 13th birthday.

Since Fallout 3 on Epic is the GOTY edition, it comes with all five add-on packs that include new campaigns, increased level caps, and even a fight against aliens in space, because why not.

Fallout 3 brought the series back to life after a decade-long hiatus and added several Bethesda staples to the post-apocalyptic survival game. While you still have to manage resources and navigate the dangers of a nuclear hellscape, you also build relationships and decide whether to promote justice in the untamed urban wilderness or side with the forces of chaos.

Evoland: Legendary Edition accompanies Fallout 3 as another of the store’s free games for the week. The bundle includes Evoland and its sequel, both of which are billed as distinct RPGs that take players through the history of game design. Progressing through Evoland unlocks new mechanics and visual improvements as you graduate from 8-bit graphics to modern 3D.

Meanwhile, you can still grab Toejam & Earl: Back in the Groove for free until Oct. 20, 2022.

Set photos from the Fallout TV series have leaked

Amazon’s small-screen adaptation of Fallout looks faithful in these set photo leaks.

Several set photos from Amazon’s upcoming Fallout TV series have leaked online. Some of which allegedly show off the iconic and all-new locations alike.

Over on r/Fotv, a Subreddit devoted to discussing the show, user International_Tip123 posted the set images earlier this week but took them down not long after out of concern for Amazon’s retribution. Thankfully, those photos are still all over social media for your viewing pleasure (Thanks, Rock Paper Shotgun). Or at least until the ban (or DMCA) hammers potentially come down, anyway.

Most of the stills appear to be of Vault 32, a location not seen in any of the Fallout video games. Take a look at the pictures for yourself below.

The shot of a nursery room is right out of Fallout 3‘s opening. Those cradles are sitting in an awkward position, though that might be due to the sets not being complete.

An outside farm dwelling is curious too. It’s hard to say if that’s within a Vault or on the surface. Probably the former, given Fallout‘s fiction. Either way, the production valves are certainly there — it looks great.

There are more pictures too. Below is a propaganda poster insisting that “the outside world can never hurt you,” despite all the radiation and monsters running around, eh?

The Fallout TV show doesn’t have an air date yet. We knew early on that Yellowjackets star Ella Purnell would be in the series. Variety reported that Kyle MacLachlan, Xelia Mendes-Jones, and Aaron Moten joined the cast in June.

Fallout 5 will arrive after Elder Scrolls 6, according to Todd Howard

The wait for another post-apocalyptic RPG from Bethesda could be a long one.

Get comfortable because the wait for the next Fallout won’t be short.

In an interview with IGN, Bethesda’s Todd Howard explained that the studio is currently busy making its sci-fi RPG Starfield. Once that project is over, development on Elder Scrolls 6 will ramp up.

Elder Scrolls 6 is in pre-production and, you know, we’re going to be doing Fallout 5 after that, so our slate’s pretty full going forward for a while,” Howard explains. “We have some other projects that we look at from time to time as well.”

[mm-video type=video id=01fw0vx38z2af3dc5ten playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fw0vx38z2af3dc5ten/01fw0vx38z2af3dc5ten-deae1cc2c2a040c9180b364b8145fedd.jpg]

Later in the same interview, Howard revealed that Bethesda began working on Starfield in 2015. When the game (hopefully) ships in 2023, it’ll have been in development for almost eight years. Factor in that Elder Scrolls 6 will probably take just as long to make, and you realize Fallout 5 is a long way off. Bethesda Game Studios isn’t known for speedy releases, after all.

“They do take a while, I wish they came out faster, I really do, we’re trying as hard as we can,” Howard continues. “But we want them to be as best as they can be for everybody.”

Starfield was shown off during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase on Sunday, and thus far, it’s looking good.

Yellowjackets star Ella Purnell cast in Fallout TV Series

The cast keeps on growing.

Ella Purnell, best known for her role on Yellowjackets, was just cast in the Fallout TV series.

According to Deadline, Purnell is reportedly headlining the silver screen adaptation of Bethesda’s post-apologetic RPG, with her character’s name allegedly being Jean. Like most aspects of the Fallout TV show, concrete details are noticeably sparse (aside from the teaser trailer below). Probably because the series isn’t even entering production until this fall.

Fallout isn’t Purnell’s first foray into the world of video game adaptations. Last fall, the actress played Jinx in Arcane: League of Legends, a role that would later net her an Annie Award for best voice acting.

Purnell’s other notable projects include Army of the Dead, Sweetbitter, Maleficent, Kick Ass, and Star Trek Prodigy. So she’s no stranger to the limelight, that’s for sure.

Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy of Westworld fame are behind the Fallout TV series. With Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner of Captain Marvel and Silicon Valley fame respectively undertaking showrunner duties. Bethesda’s Todd Howard and James Altman will also take on executive producer duties.

Microsoft is reportedly in ‘early talks’ about Fallout: New Vegas 2

Obsidian may helm a sequel.

There are reportedly discussions between Microsoft and Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment over a potential sequel.

Over on Giantbomb, games industry insider Jeff Grubb spoke on his show Grubbsnax about potential plans for Fallout: New Vegas 2. VGC then transcribed the conversation.

“This is very early, but people have begun to have talks and say these words in sentences, and these words are Obsidian and [Fallout New Vegas 2],” Grubb said. “We’re talking years and years away. There’s at least an interest and conversations happening about making something like that actually a reality.”

Not since 2015’s Fallout 4 has a mainline entry come out of this series. Bethesda is planning Fallout 5, but it’s a long way off. Studio director and producer Todd Howard is working with Amazon on a Fallout TV series that’ll enter production this year.

Fallout: New Vegas, on the other hand, was developed by Obsidian Entertainment in 2010, though the studio hasn’t worked on the series since. Fans have been hoping Obsidian Entertainment might make Fallout: New Vegas 2 ever since Microsoft bought the studio in 2018 and later acquired Bethesda Softworks in 2021.

The possibility is certainly there, though nothing is certain until one of these companies comes out with a confirmation.

Fallout TV series from Westworld creators enters production this year

War never changes.

The Fallout  TV series from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the duo best known for co-creating Westworld, will reportedly enter production in 2022.

A report by Deadline  states that the series from Kilter Films and Amazon Studios is finally coming together. Nolan will direct Fallout’s  first episode while simultaneously taking on producer duties with Lisa Joy. Showrunners include Geneva Robertson-Dworet of Captain Marvel  fame and Graham Wagner, one of the minds behind Silicon Valley. Talk about an all-star line-up.

Bethesda’s own Todd Howard  and James Altman will be among the executive producers on the series as well. So there’ll be some oversight from the people who hand in Fallout 3  and Fallout 4’s  creation. Hopefully, that means it’ll end up as one of the  better video game adaptations.

Back in 2020, when Amazon Studios secured the license to Fallout, a teaser for the show dropped on Twitter which you can check out below.

Amazon Studios and Kilter Films don’t have an exact production start date yet, though everyone involved insists it’ll happen this year. In nothing else, the series will probably be out long before Fallout 5  ever is, as Bethesda is still busing working on Starfield.

Fallout fans come together to raise money for children’s cancer research

Fallout For Hope is putting together a massive event for a great cause.

Hundreds of Fallout  fans are coming together for a charity event where all proceeds go toward children’s cancer research.

Fallout For Hope, an annual livestream event organized by members of the Fallout  community, is raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Hundreds of streamers between Dec. 4 through Dec. 19 will play titles from across the whole Fallout  series while also partaking in special series-themed events. Kenneth Vigue, founder and organizer of Fallout For Hope, told ForTheWin that organizing this year’s event was a herculean effort.

“I started [Fallout For Hope] last year on a whim with only a few weeks of planning and we still had over 300 people taking part, raising $106,000 for St. Jude in just a week,” Vigue said via email. “After the event exceeded expectations, St. Jude and I began planning in January to make the event a proper and long-term charity initiative that’s become something of a tradition for the Fallout  community.”

The Fallout For Hope has a metric ton of brilliant activities planned for the event as well, including:

  • Quake-like esports tournaments in Fallout 76’s custom maps on Dec. 10
  • A lore-driven game show called “Whose Apocalypse Is It Anyway?” that’ll feature actors Danny Shorago (Fallout 4) and Chip Joslin (Fallout 76) doing improv skits Dec. 11
  • “Apocalypse Squares” trivia with guests Wes Johnson (Fallout 3Fallout 4) along with others on Dec. 12
  • A live production of A Chrismas Carol  in Fallout 76  with loads of actors and developers attached to the series, including Bethesda’s Pete Hines

If you would like to check out the Fallout for Hope yourself, it’s already happening on Twitch  here. Additional information, such as where to donate, can be found  here. Again, the event is running until Dec. 19, so there’s loads of time to check it out and support a great cause.

‘Fallout 5’ is alive, but likely years away

Bethesda has a one-pager for ‘Fallout 5’ – but don’t get too excited yet.

Todd Howard’s been thinking about Fallout 5.

As do we all, from time to time. But when the director and exec producer of Bethesda Game Studios ponders the post-apocalyptic RPG series, it sets things in motion.

Howard and his team already have a creative concept already for the next Fallout game: “We have a one-pager on Fallout 5, what we want to do”, he told IGN

It’s probably too early to start packing our bags and boarding the hype train though.

“I’d like to find a way to accelerate what we do,” he said, referencing the long gaps between Elder Scrolls and Fallout releases, “but I really can’t say today or commit to anything that’s gonna happen [or] when, other than ‘Hey, our cadence is Starfield and then Elder Scrolls 6.”

Starfield, a spacefaring new IP from the studio, has a pretty firm release date now so we should all be playing it on Nov. 11, 2022.

Their next game on the slate is Elder Scrolls 6, which was officially announced at E3 2018 while in pre-production and not yet in a playable state.

So it sounds like we’ve got some time on our hands before Fallout 5 drops.

[mm-video type=video id=01fm4yerwgjnfze0y3xh playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fm4yerwgjnfze0y3xh/01fm4yerwgjnfze0y3xh-de79e73834c2ae0e4123351ccfd8139a.jpg]

One possible avenue to accelerate what they do, as Howard put it, would be to hand development over to another team within the Bethesda fold. Obsidian Entertainment was entrusted with Fallout: New Vegas, for example, which won an enduring cult status for its hardcore tabletop style ruleset.

BGS has several studio locations whose responsibilities overlap. We’re interpolating here, of course, but it sounds like it’s at least within the company’s resources to hand IPs off to different locations and develop them simultaneously.

Fallout’s really part of our DNA here. We’ve worked with other people from time to time, I can’t say what’s gonna happen” said Howard.

On the wider BGS operation, he added: “I like to view it as one big team, and then we have groups that focus on one game.”

“So you could look at the Fallout 76 team, mostly based in Austin right now, and that’s a full team that you would put on a game but they work on other things. And a lot of people here in Rockville worked on 76 and Montreal and Dallas as well.

We’ve always done it that way so we can move between projects so everybody knows they’re gonna work on Elder Scrolls 6 in some fashion.”
