Falcons RB Ito Smith on Week 12 performance: ‘I knew I had to capitalize’

Falcons running back Ito Smith rushed for 65 yards on 12 carries while backing up starter Brian Hill on Sunday.

Falcons running back Ito Smith rushed for 65 yards on 12 carries while backing up starter Brian Hill on Sunday. Smith, who also scored the only touchdown between the two ball carriers, talked to the media following Atlanta’s 43-6 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

During the first portion of the press conference, Smith discussed his long road back and how he persevered through his injury and recovery in 2019. When asked if his performance proves he deserves more carries, Smith said he hoped so, but that it would remain up to his coaches.

“When somebody’s producing, they should get an opportunity. Hopefully I do, that’s up to the coaches. I’m going to keep doing my job and hopefully we keep winning.”

Smith was also asked if his lack of playing time was motivation for his performance in Week 12.

“Nobody wants to sit on the bench. When I knew I was up this week and getting my chance, I knew I had to capitalize.”

He finished off the postgame press conference emphasizing the team’s next-man-up mentality that seems to be heavily enforced by Raheem Morris. Smith believes the team can carry over that confidence as the Falcons turn their attention to getting revenge against the Saints in Week 13.

Raheem Morris praises Falcons’ mindset after 43-6 win over Raiders

In what was arguably the team’s most impressive victory of the season, we saw Atlanta close out the Raiders by turning up the heat in the fourth quarter instead of checking out early.

After last weekend’s humiliating loss to the New Orleans Saints, very few people around the NFL would have been surprised if the Atlanta Falcons crumbled over the final six weeks of the season. Interim head coach Raheem Morris simply wasn’t going to let that happen under his watch, and the Falcons responded with the 43-6 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

In what was arguably the team’s most impressive victory of the season, we saw Atlanta close out the Raiders by turning up the heat in the fourth quarter instead of checking out early.

Morris is now 4-2 since taking over as head coach. Following the game, he addressed the media and credited the Falcons’ “ball mentality” as the key to the team creating five turnovers (4 forced fumbles, 1 interception) during Sunday’s win.

Falcons vs Raiders: Winners and losers from Week 12

The Falcons can now turn their attention to next Sunday’s rematch against the Saints after a dominant 43-6 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12.

The Falcons can now turn their attention to next Sunday’s rematch against the Saints after today’s dominant 43-6 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. After last week’s ugly loss in New Orleans, this was the kind of response fans wanted to see out of interim coach Raheem Morris, who is now 4-2 since taking over for Dan Quinn.

Going in different direction than a week ago, here are this week’s winners and losers from Sunday’s victory.

Winner: Younghoe Koo

Even when injured, Koo is automatic. At this point, Koo is just stat padding his already extensive Pro Bowl bid. On the day, Koo converted on all five of his field goal attempts, three of those kicks were after he suffered a knee injury due to a raiders penalty. He made a 54-yard kick to tie his season long. Koo has now made 29 of 30 field goals on the season and shows no signs of slowing down.

Loser: Brian Hill and Ito Smith

Hill was designated as the Falcons starter due to Todd Gurley being unavailable with a knee injury, with Ito Smith as his primary backup. While both players did turn the corner late in the game, they were largely ineffective during the first three quarters. Even with a below-average performance, Smith did manage to score a late touchdown to officially put the game to bed. You would like to see more from these two, especially if Gurley cannot go again next week.

Winner: Foye oluokun

Oluokun is trying to join Koo in making his ever Pro Bowl. Atlanta’s third-year linebacker forced his fourth fumble of the season when he strip-sacked Derek Carr. Oluokun would later recover another fumble that was forced by LaRoy Reynolds in the fourth quarter.

Loser: Falcons pass protection

While the Falcons were able to move up and down the field throughout much of the second half, there were still times were the pass rush disrupted the offense’s flow. Maxx Crosby and Carl Nassib gave Atlanta trouble at times on Sunday. In addition, LG James Carpenter did go down with an unknown injury. Hennessey does have experience at the position and could see time next week if Carpenter is out.

Winner: Raheem Morris

After starting the season 0-5, you wouldn’t be wrong for not having faith in Raheem Morris. However, his 4-2 record as interim head coach is pretty impressive and has potential to be even more impressive with the upcoming slate of opponents. How the team performs against New Orleans in Week 13 will say a lot about Morris’ coaching abilities.

Winner: Playoff hopes

Despite a ton of armchair general managers wishing the Falcons would try and get a better draft position, this team still understands that there is plenty of football left to be played and COVID-19 can create a lot of uncertainty. Not only did the Falcons help themselves by winning against the Raiders, but losses for both Carolina and Arizona shrink the wildcard playoff gap.

Not to mention, there are a number of late afternoon games that could also benefit Atlanta’s playoff hopes.

Biggest Winner: Falcons’ defense

Give praise to anybody who started the Falcons’ defense in their fantasy league. Atlanta forced five turnovers and LB Deion Jones recorded a pick-6. The defense were also able to bring the pressure and sack Raiders QB Derek Carr five times.

Foye Oluokun and Deion Jones spearheaded a dominant defensive effort, slowing down an opposing offense that went toe-to-toe with Kansas City last weekend. The Falcons even proved stout when covering tight end Darren Waller, a position that has hurt the Falcons all season long.

Falcons G James Carpenter carted off in the 4th quarter

The Falcons won their Week 12 matchup over the Las Vegas Raiders, 43-6, but lost two players during the game due to injury.

The Falcons won their Week 12 matchup over the Las Vegas Raiders, 43-6, but lost two players during the game due to injury. In the first half, wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus exited with a toe injury and did not return.

Later in the fourth quarter, starting left guard James Carpenter had to be carted off the field.

Assuming Carpenter’s injury is serous, Falcons third-round pick Matt Hennessy could in line for the start next week at left guard. Hennessy split reps with Carpenter earlier in the season, but Carpenter’s play became steady enough that the team stopped rotating him out.

Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo also appeared to hurt his leg during a missed field goal when a Raiders defender rolled into him. Koo toughed it out, though, and finished a perfect 5-for-5 on field goals, and went 4-for-4 on extra points.

Falcons force 4 fumbles during 43-6 win over the Raiders

Let’s examine the performances of Atlanta’s offense, defense and special teams units after Sunday’s game.

Sometimes, everything just clicks. That was the case for the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, as they had their way with the visiting Las Vegas Raiders during a 43-6 blowout victory.

OFFENSE

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

The offense moved the ball well, but suffered from some early miscues. After settling for multiple field goals, the Falcons wound up scoring 43 points (thanks to Deion Jones’ pick-six) with less than 200 passing yards from QB Matt Ryan.

For the game, Ryan finished with 185 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Wide receiver Calvin Ridley returned to the end zone, catching his seventh touchdown of the season on a day where the team was without Julio Jones.

Brian Hill replaced Todd Gurley and went on to rush for 55 yards. He was out-gained by Ito Smith, who finished with 65 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

Wide receiver Brandon Powell caught his second touchdown of the year on a day where seemingly nothing could go wrong.
