Joe Mazzulla once passed on a job assistant coaching with the Boston Celtics to keep his word to a recruit

Mazzulla passed on a chance to assistant coach for the team he now helms in order to keep his word to a recruit at Fairmont State.

Most of us have heard the story of a college recruit electing to attend a particular university in order to play for a head coach on the rise only to see that coach’s rise take him to a new school even before that recruit shows up on campus to start his college career.

But when it comes to Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla, the opposite scenario played out. Mazzulla passed on a chance to be an assistant coach for the team he now helms to keep his word to a recruit at Fairmont State, the school where the now Celtics coach cut his teeth.

The national media caught wind of that extraordinary feat of loyalty, with it even making it to an episode of ESPN’s “NBA Countdown.”

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear senior ESPN analyst Adrian Wojnarowski recounting the tale of Mazzulla staying at Fairmont State to keep his word.

What kind of head coach will Joe Mazzulla be on the court for the Boston Celtics in 2022-23?

The Celtics’ interim coach has given us some clues with his past.

What kind of head coach will Joe Mazzulla be on the court for the Boston Celtics in 2022-23?

We have heard plenty of testimonials of the sort of person he is and the character he has, how he can lead this team through a number of concerns, not the least of which is how he ended up in the job in the wake of the suspension of head coach Ime Udoka this offseason.

But we have heard little and seen about as much of what he can do with an NBA-Finals caliber roster, which he will helm not only as a manager of egos but also as a tactician expected to use his knowledge of the game to help Boston win.

To answer that question, the host of the “Box and 1” podcast, Adam Spinella, recently put together a video breaking down what we could expect from Mazzulla with the Celtics based on his past experience with Fairmont State, a Division II school Mazzulla coached before joining the Celtics.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to get an idea of what we might see from the West Virginia product on the other side of the clipboard.

Mike Moon hired as Notre Dame assistant defensive line coach

Notre Dame always is looking for the next member of its coaching staff to help maintain its tradition of excellence.

Notre Dame always is looking for the next member of its coaching staff to help maintain its tradition of excellence. Irish defensive line coach Mike Elston decided he needed some young blood to assist with his unit. He’s found it in Mike Moon:

This is an abrupt switch for Moon, who recently accepted the defensive line coach job at Fairmont State. Apparently, the chance to coach at Notre Dame was too tempting. Plus, someone accepting one job only to have a greater opportunity suddenly come along surely has happened more in the real world than we know.

Before that, he was a graduate assistant for the defensive line at Old Dominion. He didn’t get a chance to show off his coaching skills this past season as Old Dominion canceled its fall sports season in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. That made the Monarchs one of the few Football Bowl Subdivision programs not to compete in 2020.
