ONE 170 news: Fabricio Andrade set for first title defense against Won Il Kwon in January

Fabricio Andrade will defend his ONE bantamweight title for the first time against a familiar opponent in January at ONE 170.

ONE Championship creates more depth in its big January event by adding the return of champion [autotag]Fabricio Andrade[/autotag].

At ONE 170 on Jan. 24 at Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand, Andrade (9-2) will defend his bantamweight (145 pounds) title for the first time against a familiar opponent, [autotag]Won Il Kwon[/autotag]. The promotion directly confirmed the news of the matchup with MMA Junkie.

The event is an Asian primetime card starting at 7:30 a.m. ET.

Andrade achieved his crowning moment by defeating John Lineker at ONE on Prime Video 7 in February 2023. Lineker’s corner stopped the fight after the conclusion of Round 4 due to damage to their fighter’s eye.

Since his big moment, Andrade, 27, has only appeared once in a kickboxing bout against Jonathan Haggerty. It was an attempt to become a two-sport champion in ONE, but things did not go his way as he was stopped in the second round. Now, he’s geared up for his return to MMA competition and will look to defend his title for the first time against Kwon (14-4), who he previously faced and finished.

The first meeting took place at ONE Championship 158 in June 2022. Andrade finished the fight with a liver kick in the first round, which led to back-to-back appearances against Lineker.

Kwon has not lost since. The 29-year-old South Korean fighter has gone on a tear, finishing three consecutive opponents. His most recent appearance was a second-round ground and pounding of Shinechagtga Zoltsetseg in January, which has set up his title opportunity.

With the addition, the ONE 170 lineup includes:

  • Fabricio Andrade vs. Won Il Kwon – for bantamweight title
  • Tawanchai PK Saenchai vs. Superbon Banchamek – for muay Thai lightweight title
  • Superlek Kiatmoo9 vs. Nico Carrillo – for muay Thai featherweight title
  • Saeksan Or Kwanmuang vs. Soe Lin Oo
  • Suriyanlek Por Yenying vs. Thant Zin

ONE on Prime Video 7 results: Fabricio Andrade damages John Lineker’s eye for title-winning corner stoppage

Damage from Fabricio Andrade left John Lineker on the stool before the final round, crowning a new ONE Championship bantamweight king.

ONE Championship has a new bantamweight king, and his name is [autotag]Fabricio Andrade[/autotag].

Andrade (9-2 MMA, 6-0 ONE) ran it back with John Lineker in a championship rematch in the main event of ONE on Prime Video 7. The event took place at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, and aired on Amazon Prime Video.

The pair first met with the title on the line in October at ONE on Prime Video 3, with unfortunate events occurring for both parties. First, Lineker (35-10 MMA, 4-1 ONE) lost the title on the scale by missing weight, and then the fight resulted in a no contest after Andrade landed an accidental low blow to Lineker in the third round.

There would be a few differences the second time around. A cage served as the competition enclosure the first time, but in the second meeting, the fight took place in a ring. Most importantly, this time there would be a definitive result.

Big shots were traded early in the first round. Andrade looked for knees up the middle while Lineker swung his patented power hooks. Keeping his opponent guessing, Linker also mixed in a few takedown attempts before going back to his power-punching game, once buckling the legs of his Andrade.

Late in the first though, Andrade landed a series sharp punches to the jaw of Lineker, putting him on wobbly legs, but the end of the round came before a stoppage occurred.

The firefight continued in the second round.

Lineker landed a powerful punch that sent Andrade to the mat, but he quickly got back to his feet. The striking exchanges continued until the end of the round, with both men landing their share of kicks and punches.

Andrade stuck with quicker, sharper punches up the middle while attempting to defend the hard looping hooks from Lineker. Body shots were in the mix as well for Lineker, but the snappy left jab and kicks from Andrade scored throughout the third too.

A big overhand right from Lineker knocked Andrade off balance early in the fourth, but he was able to recover and get back to working behind the jab. Intense exchanges continued throughout the round. Andrade busted open a cut on the right eye of Lineker, and excelled in the final moments of the frame.

Between rounds, Lineker’s eye was too much of a concern for his corner. Lineker’s coach opted to stop the fight to prevent any further damage, therefore crowning Andrade the new bantamweight champion after the fourth round.

“It’s been a long journey, I’ve been through so much stuff,” Andrade said during his post-fight interview. “Thank you so much, everyone. This is the best day of my life.”

Andrade, 25, claims gold in his eighth consecutive victory, continuing his undefeated run in ONE Championship. His title-winning stoppage of Lineker marked the fifth stoppage with the promotion.

Lineker, 32, walks away with his first defeat under the ONE Championship banner. The UFC veteran won his four previous bouts with the promotion, including a stoppage of Bibiano Fernades last March to win the title.

Fabricio Andrade: If ‘delusional’ John Lineker comes to fight, ‘I’ll knock him out in the first round’

Fabricio Andrade is confident if things stay on the feet with John Lineker, he’ll take him out to win ONE Championship’s bantamweight title.

[autotag]Fabricio Andrade[/autotag] is confident that if things remain on the feet with [autotag]John Lineker[/autotag], he takes him out.

Andrade (8-2-1) will run things back with Lineker (35-9-1) for the vacant bantamweight title in the ONE on Prime Video 7 main event Feb. 25 at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

Their first fight this past October at ONE on Prime Video 3 was ruled a no contest after an accidental groin shot by Andrade rendered Lineker unable to continue. Because Lineker missed weight, he was stripped of his bantamweight title, so only Andrade was eligible to become champion.

Prior to the unfortunate stoppage, Andrade boxed Lineker’s eye shut and had him hurt. The 25-year-old thinks he was en route to a finish had he not fouled Lineker by mistake.

“If he comes to fight, I’ll knock him out in the first round,” Andrade said in an interview with ONE Championship. “But we saw in the last fight he tried to wrestle with me, something we had agreed not to do. … I’m just going to be patient. I’ll be ready to knock him out at any second in the fight.

“I don’t believe he thinks he can win this fight. If he does, he’s delusional.”

Although he didn’t walk away with the title, Andrade is brimming with confidence heading into their rematch.

“This camp was much more enjoyable than the last one,” Andrade said. “I think before the last fight I put a lot of pressure (on myself). … Ahead of this one, I already know I’m the No. 1 bantamweight in the world. I’m coming to the fight as a champion and to finish what I started in the first fight.”

ONE on Prime Video 3 results: Fabricio Andrade’s low blow breaks John Lineker’s cup; fight declared no contest

John Lineker writhed in pain and simply could not continue after taking a hard knee to the groin that broke his cup.

“His cup is broken. His cup has been shattered.”

Those were the words from the ONE on Prime Video 3 broadcast booth as [autotag]John Lineker[/autotag] writhed in pain on the mat after taking a hard knee to the groin from [autotag]Fabricio Andrade[/autotag]. And it was true: The knee was so hard that Lineker removed his broken cup from his shorts.

The illegal blow also abruptly ended Friday night’s main event in Kuala Lumpur as Lineker couldn’t continue, declaring the fight a no contest. With Lineker already stripped of the bantamweight title after missing weight, the result also meant that Andrade – who was still eligible to win the title – couldn’t walk away with the gold.

Not an ideal conclusion for either man, but especially Andrade who might’ve been on his way to a finish after hurting Lineker with a perfectly legal knee before following up too low.

Andrade (8-2) got out to a great start in Round 1 when he started touching up Lineker (35-9) with an assortment of jabs and straight lefts, one of which staggered Lineker. Just as Andrade started to pour it on, Lineker turned into a wrestler and came up with a critical takedown that may have saved him. He controlled Andrade until about a minute remained, and Andrade was back to using his noticeable reach advantage to pelt Lineker with punches. Lineker’s response was to wing overhand punches, and a left caught Andrade before the round ended.

Early in Round 2, Lineker landed a nice combo of four hooks to the body and face. Lineker shot in for a takedown and ate a knee on the way in. When Andrade found his way back to his feet, Lineker continued with his attack, but a key moment came while they were standing, as Andrade landed a hard straight left hand that caused Lineker’s already damaged right eye to close. That allowed Andrade to repeatedly connect in the final minute, which left Lineker with bad swelling. Still, the cageside doctor allowed him to continue.

Round 3, though, didn’t last long. Andrade landed a hard knee to the stomach that hurt Lineker, but when he backed up to the cage, Andrade threw the fateful low blow that ended the fight.

John Lineker stripped of title after missing weight for ONE on Prime Video 3

John Lineker lost his title on the scale ahead of ONE on Prime Video 3.

[autotag]John Lineker[/autotag] has been stripped of the ONE Championship bantamweight title after missing weight Thursday.

Lineker lost the promotion’s 145-pound title on the scale after he weighed in at 145.5 on his first attempt and 145.75 on his second try ahead of his ONE on Prime Video 3 headliner vs. [autotag]Fabricio Andrade[/autotag], who did make weight.

The weigh-in results were reported by the South China Morning Post.

The fight will go on as scheduled, with Lineker being fined 20 percent of his purse and Andrade still eligible to become the new ONE bantamweight champion if he’s victorious.

It’s an unfortunate turn of events for Lineker, who won the bantamweight title this past March when he knocked out longtime champ Bibiano Fernandes.

Lineker, a seven-year veteran of the UFC, is 4-0 since making his ONE Championship debut in October 2019. Three of his victories have come by knockout/TKO.

Andrade, 25, is 8-2 as a professional and rides a seven-fight winning streak heading into ONE on Prime Video 3, which takes place Friday (Saturday locally) in Kuala Lumpur and streams on Amazon Prime Video.

John Lineker, Fabricio Andrade promise knockouts in ONE on Prime Video 3 bantamweight title bout

ONE Championship bantamweight champ John Lineker and challenger Fabricio Andrade promise to land the knockout blow in their title fight.

Both competitors in the upcoming ONE Championship bantamweight title bout promise to land a knockout blow on their opponent.

Looking to defend his title for the first time will be the hard-hitting [autotag]John Lineker[/autotag] as he takes on [autotag]Fabricio Andrade[/autotag], who has strung together an impressive series of finishes himself.

The title fight will serve as the main event of ONE on Prime Video 3, which takes place at Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Oct. 21. The event streams live on Amazon Prime Video.

Andrade (8-2 MMA, 5-0 ONE) enters his title opportunity against Lineker (35-9 MMA, 5-0 ONE) on a seven-fight win streak, which includes five finishes. His last three bouts did not make it out of the first round. Despite his recent run, Lineker is undeterred and is confident the belt he acquired in March by knocking out Bibiano Fernandes will remain around his waist.

“I think he’s more emotional than confident,” Lineker said through an interpreter during a virtual pre-fight news conference. “Yes, he’s coming as the challenger so he has all the weight on him. I’m the champion. I’m already here, I just have to keep my place. He should focus instead of talking so much, into building himself up for the fight.”

Andrade, 25, says he plans on adding Lineker to the list of names he has knocked out in what will be the biggest fight of his career thus far.

“He don’t need to worry about how prepared I am for this fight,” Andrade said. “He can be sure that I’m going to bring a level of fight that he never saw in his life, and he can be sure that I’m ready to knock him out. The talk, it is what it is. I’m not here to say stuff that is not true. I’m just talking facts. I’m a better fighter and I’m coming to knock him out.”

[lawrence-related id=2586958]

Lineker, 32, has over four times the professional MMA experience than his opponent, including sharing the cage with some of the best bantamweights the UFC had to offer when he was with that promotion from 2012-19. The champion recognizes Andrade’s skills, but ultimately believes his calling card will be the deciding factor.

“Fabricio is a great striker, great muay Thai fighter, good kicks, good hands, but what I think will make the difference is my heavy hands, my iron fist,” Lineker said. “You guys have seen that when I strike, I strike strong, and it impacts the punch.”

The challenger isn’t concerned about the power coming his way, though. Andrade believes he is equally strong in striking, and his three-straight first-round finishes support his argument.

“I believe I’m as powerful as he is,” Andrade said. “But I think what makes the difference is my fight IQ and my skills. He just got punches, I got punches, I got kicks, I got knees, and I got movement. I got everything I need. So, the power is even, but my skill is way above his.”

“Yeah, I have my punch, but that’s all I need,” Lineker said in response. “This is like football, I just need to score one goal to win, so I just need one good punch to win.”

ONE Championship: Full Circle results – Reinier de Ridder dominates, taps fellow champ Kiamrian Abbasov

Kiamrian Abbasov’s quest to become a two-division ONE champion came up short Friday – well short.

[autotag]Kiamrian Abbaso[/autotag]v’s quest to become a two-division ONE champion came up short Friday – well short.

In the ONE Championship: Full Circle main event, middleweight and light heavyweight champion [autotag]Reinier de Ridder[/autotag] (15-0) retained his middleweight belt with a third-round submission of welterweight champ Abbasov (23-5), who had moved up to try to become a dual titleholder.

De Ridder took Abbasov down early in the first round. He omved to side control and unleashed ground and pound for much of the opening frame. In the second, it was more of the same. Late in the round, de Ridder worked for an arm-triangle choke and nearly got the finish, but Abbasov survived to see the third.

But in that round, after de Ridder again quickly got the fight to the canvas, his choke was not denied. Abbasov had to tap 57 seconds into the third. De Ridder got a $50,000 bonus to go along with his win.

Also on the card, former ONE middleweight champ Vitaly Bigdash picked up a unanimous decision over Aung La N Sang in their trilogy fight. La N Sang was strong on the feet, but Bigdash used takedowns throughout the fight to lead to submission attempts and won over the judges.

ONE Championship: Full Circle results included:

  • Champ Reinier de Ridder def. Kiamrian Abbasov via submission (arm-triangle choke) – Round 3, 0:57 – to retain middleweight title
  • Vitaly Bigdash def. Aung La N Sang via unanimous decision
  • [autotag]Fabricio Andrade[/autotag] def. [autotag]Jeremy Pacatiw[/autotag] via knockout (punches) – Round 1, 1:37

ONE Championship 128: Alyona Rassohyna stuns Stamp Fairtex with last-gasp submission

Stamp Fairtex looked to be on her way to a hard-fought decision win against Ukrainian debutant Alyona Rassohyna, but a late guillotine choke forced the Thai starlet to tap with just eight seconds remaining as she suffered her first defeat in MMA. …

[autotag]Stamp Fairtex[/autotag] looked to be on her way to a hard-fought decision win against Ukrainian debutant [autotag]Alyona Rassohyna[/autotag], but a late guillotine choke forced the Thai starlet to tap with just eight seconds remaining as she suffered her first defeat in MMA.

Former ONE atomweight kickboxing and muay Thai champion Fairtex (5-1) faced submission specialist Rassohyna (13-4) in the main event of “ONE Championship 128: Unbreakable III” at Singapore Indoor Stadium, and over the course of their three-round battle showed her evolution as an MMA fighter as she happily scrambled back and forth on the mats with her more seasoned opponent.

Rassohyna’s tactic was clear from the very start, and in Round 1 the Ukrainian was successful in getting the fight to the canvas. But once the action hit the mat, Fairtex surprised Rassohyna with her scrambling ability as she repeatedly denied the debutant in her quest to claim her 11th first-round armbar submission finish.

When the fight was on the feet, it was all Fairtex, as the decorated striker dominated the kickboxing exchanges, but although Rassohyna was able to repeatedly take the action to the canvas, Fairtex’s defensive skills were enough to thwart the Ukrainian, with the Thai fighter even attempting a gogoplata before escaping an armbar attempt and finishing the round with punishing strikes when they returned to the feet.

Round 2 followed a similar pattern, but with Fairtex finding it a little easier to keep the fight standing, as the tide appeared to be turning in her favor through the midway point in the fight. A late body shot even put her opponent on the canvas in the final moments of the round as Fairtex’s striking power appeared to be taking over the fight.

With Rassohyna running out of ideas, and clearly tiring, Fairtex took control of Round 3 as she kept the Ukrainian on the end of her strikes as she scored repeatedly with straight punches and thumping roundhouse kicks to the body. However, with one minute remaining, Rassohyna threw caution to the wind and landed a final takedown as she desperately looked to find a last-gasp submission. Remarkably, that persistence paid off when she caught Fairtex trying to escape and locked up a tight guillotine choke that forced the Thai to tap with just eight seconds of the bout remaining.

Seemingly believing the bout had reached the final bell, Fairtex initially celebrated as referee Olivier Coste stepped in to stop the fight, but that celebration immediately turned to denial and protest as she disputed the experienced official’s call. However, instant replays clearly showed Fairtex had tapped as victory was handed to a tearful Rassohyna, who picked up a huge win on her promotional debut and in the process handed Fairtex her first career defeat in mixed martial arts.

Fabricio Andrade credits ‘Hickman brothers wrestling’ for his ONE Championship win

ONE Championship returned to action this past weekend, and a little-known Brazilian featherweight picked up a big win for his career.

ONE Championship returned to action this past weekend, and a little-known Brazilian featherweight picked up a big win for his career.

[autotag]Fabricio Andrade[/autotag] (4-2) made his promotional debut in spectacular fashion, earning a second-round technical submission win over longtime veteran Mark Abelardo (19-8). The bout served as the first MMA contest of Friday’s ONE Championship 110 event in Thailand.

Afterward, Andrade said he wasn’t nearly as surprised as others might be.

“I feel like I did my job,” Andrade said after the win. “I feel like I did what I came to do, and I finished my job.”

Fighting for the first time in 14 months and the first time ever in the ONE Championship ring, Andrade certainly was a bit of a mystery. However, he certainly impressed in the performance.

Training at Tiger Muay Thai in Thailand, Andrade gave praise to brothers George and Frank Hickman for elevating his game.

“Nobody knows me,” Andrade said. “Nobody knows that I have jiu-jitsu. People think that I’m a striker, but I’m not. I’m complete. I’m jiu-jitsu. I’m wrestling. I’m everything. He tried to take me down, I did that Hickman brothers wrestling, and then I did that jiu-jitsu that I was training everyday.”
