Chiefs announce contract extensions for Andy Reid, Brett Veach

The Chiefs have officially signed Andy Reid and Brett Veach to contract extensions.

After an 8-1 start to the 2020 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs saw it fit to extend both HC Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach. We knew ahead of the season that the team was working toward finalizing contract extensions for the pair. Those extensions reportedly were set to keep Reid and Veach together through the 2025 season. Now, they’ve officially put pen to paper and inked the deals fresh off the bye week. The team is in a position to secure a top seed in the AFC playoffs, and have now locked down key members of their organization, including their franchise quarterback, for the foreseeable future.

Chiefs CEO and Chairman Clark Hunt made statements on each of the extensions on Monday, praising the duo for their success in Kansas City.

Here is what Hunt said of Reid:

“Over the last eight seasons here in Kansas City we’ve had the opportunity to witness one of the greatest head coaches of all time lead our franchise to its first Super Bowl title in 50 years. He’s a hall of fame head coach, but more importantly, an outstanding person who has really changed our team culture. I’d like to congratulate Andy and his family on this well-deserved extension. It is our hope that he can finish his legendary career right here in Kansas City.”

Here is what Hunt said of Veach:

“Brett has had a remarkable run as our General Manager over the past four years, and he certainly deserves this recognition. His creativity, along with personal connection to our players and staff, has helped build a championship roster. He has had an impressive start to his career as a GM, and I know he’ll continue his aggressive approach that has consistently improved the talent of the Chiefs.”

Reid and Veach also made a pair of statements of their own both incredibly thankful for the opportunity to continue to represent the Chiefs’ franchise.

Here is what Reid said:

“I’d like to thank Clark and the entire Hunt family for their support over the last eight years. Aside from winning the Super Bowl, one of my favorite moments last season was being able to be a part of bringing the Lamar Hunt Trophy back to the family. I’m grateful for our players, my coaching staff, our support staff and our great fans. My family and I love living in Kansas City, and I look forward to continuing my career here.”

Here is what Veach said:

“I’d like to thank Clark and the entire Hunt family for putting the trust and confidence in me to run our personnel department. I’m blessed to be surrounded by talented people, including a tremendous staff and a hall of fame head coach. I’m excited and looking forward to continue building upon the foundation we’ve established as a team.”

With their franchise quarterback under contract for the next 10 seasons, this move was a no-brainer for the Chiefs. It keeps the best front office and coaching staff in the league in Kansas City while they work toward winning many championships in the years to come.

This offseason could have a record number of extensions signed with salary cap projections staying flat at $109.1 million. With the cap set to increase very incrementally by 3-10 percent over the next 2-3 years, some players will want to get as much security as possible and skip the next few free agency periods.

Here is a list of every extension-eligible player this offseason (headlined by Giannis Antetokounmpo), the maximum for those that could really get it, and the probability of each player getting extended.

What’s next for Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones contract extensions complete?

Contract extensions for Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones are finished. So what is next for the Kansas City Chiefs?

The Kansas City Chiefs have checked off the two most important pieces of business from the offseason checklist. First, they locked up franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes on a long-term deal. Next, they extended franchise-tagged defensive tackle, Chris Jones. What’s next on the agenda in Kansas City, though?

In the NFL there’s always work and planning to be done for the future. Even with the two big contracts out of the way, the Chiefs still have some important contracts to prepare for. Some of those contracts are coming soon, others are on the horizon, and there are also some in the distant future they’ll need to address. Here’s a look at which players could be next to sign a new deal with the Kansas City:

Coming soon:

2020 rookie draft class

As early as this weekend, the Chiefs could begin to sign members from their 2020 rookie draft class. They’ve yet to sign any of the six players from the draft class. This is in part due to the big contracts they just handed out, but it’s mainly because none of the players have been in the building due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Rookies are scheduled to report to training camp this weekend for the Chiefs, but as we recently learned, teams haven’t been cleared to give players the go-ahead to return. It looks like a delay is inevitable and that could potentially hold things up when it comes to getting the rookies under contract. Nonetheless, with the season and preseason rapidly approaching, these players should be under contract sooner than later.

The Kansas City Chiefs managed to improve their roster through the 2020 NFL Draft.

While fans throughout the Chiefs Kingdom are excited for the arrival of new players, the front office staff in Kansas City are shifting their focuses to a new daunting task. They have two franchise mainstays that are due for long-term contract extensions in QB Patrick Mahomes and DT Chris Jones.

Both players are going to command top-tier money at their respective positions which means the franchise will need to take the utmost care with their contracts. During his post-draft conference call on Sunday, Brett Veach was asked how confident he was feeling about getting those contracts done ahead of Chiefs training camp.

“I would like to think that we’re fairly confident, and we have a lot of time,” Veach said. “(They’re) cornerstones in this organization. We do have some time, and now that the draft is over, and the free agency period here with the pandemic and the virtual draft, there was certainly a lot of distractions. But now that this is behind us here, we have a window now that we can kind of reset as an organization. We have a lot of time and this will be the focus of where we are to make sure we get these guys locked up and head into training camp, whenever that is, ready to rock and roll. Again, you can never put a definitive answer on anything, but we are certainly hopeful and confident, and we’re going to put in a lot of work from now until the start of camp.”

The Chiefs have until July 15 to get a long-term deal done with Jones. If they can’t, he’ll have to wait until the 2021 season to get a long-term deal. As for a contract for Mahomes, the Chiefs don’t exactly have to rush. Kansas City Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt also spoke on the matter over the weekend, specifically regarding a contract for Mahomes. He didn’t provide a timeline, but he did say that getting Mahomes under contract is the priority following the draft.

“I really can’t say it’s something that’s going to happen in the next three months, the next six months,” Hunt said. “It’s a priority for us and it’s also a priority for Patrick’s team, so I know it’s something that’s going to get done in the near-term. Anytime that we’re talking about a big contract for the Kansas City Chiefs, I’m intimately involved in those conversations with Brett and his cap staff. I don’t want to say that we’ve been talking about this weekly because Brett’s been very focused on the draft. As you know, and I know you’ve spoken to Brett and Andy, a lot of preparation had to go into turning this into a virtual draft and that was a challenge for everybody. So, Patrick’s contract hasn’t been a priority here over the last month, but going forward it will be.”

In any event, the Chiefs do have some options to work through with Mahomes. Just ahead of the draft, Veach mentioned the possibility of the Chiefs exercising the fifth-year option in Mahomes’ contract. The deadline for that is May 30, 2020.
