NBA pre-agency: Ranking all the extension candidates in the league

Here is a ranking of every player eligible for an extension during the 2023-24 season.

With free agency mostly over, most of the transactions left to be done are trades and extensions. There are still a handful of players on rookie-scale contracts who are eligible to extend before the start of the regular season. We’ve already seen several of the top players from the 2020 draft class with new deals like Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton, and LaMelo Ball.

We also still have many veterans that are likely to extend but haven’t become eligible yet. We’ve already seen some massive extensions like Jaylen Brown‘s record-breaking five-year, $304 million supermax contract, and Domantas Sabonis‘ five-year, $217 million renegotiation and extension.

Here is a ranking of every current extension-eligible player, the maximum amounts they can get, and the probability of each player getting extended.

Extension-eligible players in 2023-24: Anthony Davis, Jamal Murray, Anthony Edwards, and more

Here is a list of every player eligible for an extension during the 2023-24 season.

The 2023 offseason is here, and so is the fourth annual edition of HoopsHype’s extension guide. Since the 2020 offseason, there has been an uptick in players signing extensions rather than hitting free agency. The biggest difference in this year versus previous seasons is the increase to the extension limits. Now players can receive a 140 percent raise off their previous salary as opposed to 120 percent.

Here is a list of every extension-eligible player, the maximum amounts they can get, and the probability of each player getting extended.

Darren Wolfson: The Wolves have had extension talks with Nowell going back months. They made multiple offers in June. Didn’t come close with Nowell. He never even like considered signing on the dotted line. The Wolves first offer or multiple first offers… they were in June. That doesn’t need to be the Wolves’ final offer. So the Wolves can sign Noel to an extension anytime during the season. -via Spotify / October 30, 2022

How do you expect that to play out? Klay Thompson: I’m just going to do what I got to do to be the best I can be every day. I’m going to be a great player. I know what I’m capable of. I fully expect to earn another NBA contract, whether it’s this summer or next summer. I’m fully confident in my abilities. How do you wrestle with the possibility this season might be the last run with the whole core? Klay Thompson: I don’t want to believe that, but Draymond has a player option next year. You never know what happens. Whether it is or it isn’t, we have to think about what we can do to repeat because that itself is such a hard task and such a great opportunity. To have a chance to get five [titles] with Draymond, Steph and Andre [Iguodala] is a crazy, crazy thing to contextualize. I’m so freaking excited to get this season going. -via NBA.com / October 18, 2022
How did you view Draymond’s fight with Jordan and how did you handle it afterward? Klay Thompson: It was unfortunate. Violence is never the solution to anything, especially between teammates. But we are moving past it. We talked to both players as a group about needing to understand what needed to be done to mend that relationship. We know that winning cures all, and that ‘Ring Night’ will help soothe the pain from a tough couple of weeks. Klay Thompson: I love both of those guys. Draymond is my brother. We’ve been through everything together. JP is like my little brother. I want what is best for them. I’m very excited that JP got extended. He earned that. To see where he has come from his rookie season and now being the future of the franchise is special. I know Draymond and I have so much left in the tank, not just this year but for years to come. We all love each other. We’re not the Dubs without either of them. We need both of them to go where we want to go. -via NBA.com / October 18, 2022
What do you expect this season? Klay Thompson: I expect to play at an All-Star level again and hopefully become an All-Star. Early on, I’m on a minutes restriction. So, I’ll try to be as efficient as I can with those 20 minutes. Within the next few weeks, I expect to play starter minutes again. I expect to be great with all the training I did and all the experience I gained from last year. I’m no longer being inserted in the middle of the season, so I expect to have a really good year. -via NBA.com / October 18, 2022

Michael Scotto: There have been rumors out there circulating about Draymond Green and the Los Angeles Lakers. Obviously, he has a relationship with LeBron James. Some in the Warriors’ organization I’ve spoken to aren’t concerned about it. There’s a belief from some around the league it could be a negotiating tactic to get more money in extension talks with the Warriors, and maybe LeBron is trying to weaken the competition in the West. The Lakers have always been connected to star players like Draymond and Kyrie Irving, looking ahead to next summer’s offseason. -via HoopsHype / October 14, 2022

Anthony Slater: As the Warriors were getting deeper into negotiations, suddenly the Heat, who are considered a top organization the Warriors respect, decided to put four years, $120 million we’ll call it, with other unlikely incentives to Herro. I think that set a baseline for Poole and his representatives that you’ve got to at least meet that. The Anfernee Simons and RJ Barrett comparisons were thrown out the window when Herro popped at that number. I think there will be haggling around that area. I think the baseline level is the four years, $120 million range if this is going to get done.

But entering his fourth NBA campaign, RJ Barrett still doesn’t believe he or the Knicks get a lot of respect around the league, and he offered a theory why before Tuesday’s preseason game against the Pistons. “Besides the fans, which we do have a lot of fans, everybody else really doesn’t like us,” Barrett said. “Everybody else really doesn’t like us. Nah, I mean, I don’t know. I kinda always been, it’s weird. “I’ve gotten respect, but at the same time, there’s also a lot of disrespect. But that’s fine. All the guys that they want to put in front of me or whatever, I’m in their heads, so it doesn’t really matter.” -via New York Post / October 4, 2022
Tim Bontemps: The Knicks will start Jalen Brunson, Evan Fournier, RJ Barrett, Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson tonight against the Pistons in their preseason opener here at Madison Square Garden. Quentin Grimes will not play, as he’s been dealing with an injury for the past week. -via Twitter @TimBontemps / October 4, 2022
It’s part of why he made headlines on media day when he said the Knicks would “shock the world.” “What I was trying to say is we all have something to prove. We all have a chip on our shoulder. We’re all working extremely hard every day to go out there to prove ourselves,” Barrett told The Post on Sunday after practice. “I always feel like I have something to prove. We feel like we have something to prove. I was saying if we can collectively come in every day the right way and play together — offensively, defensively, everything clicks — then we can do something special. I still feel that and still believe that.” -via New York Post / October 2, 2022

With Horford’s final big-money year coming off the books, there’s a little bit of flexibility to add future money. The team is over the cap and would be limited in ways to otherwise add impact talent. That’s why we think there’s a good chance a Williams extension gets done before next Monday’s deadline. In three preseason games, Williams has showed an expanded toolbox and will be vital to this team surviving the early part of the season while dealing with frontcourt injuries. -via NBC Sports / October 13, 2022

There does not seem to be an extension coming for forward Grant Williams, sources said. And it’s believed the Suns have interest in Derrick White. However, Boston just sent a first-round pick plus a future pick swap to San Antonio for his services in February. The Celtics aren’t involved in Crowder’s trade situation at this time either, sources said. -via Yahoo! Sports / October 12, 2022
