Alabama MBB to meet Wake Forest in charity exhibition prior to start of 2023 season

Alabama men’s basketball will travel to Winston-Salem to face Wake Forest in a charity exhibition game.

The Alabama men’s basketball team will play its lone exhibition game in 2023 against Wake Forest. On Tuesday, both schools announced that the game would be a charity exhibition via X; formerly known as Twitter.

According to Wake Forest’s official website, all proceeds from the game will be used to support stroke research at the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Stroke Center.

The Crimson Tide will travel to Winston-Salem to face the Demon Deacons on Oct. 29. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m. ET / 12:00 p.m. CT and take place at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The game will be a good opportunity for Alabama to evaluate itself and help discover its identity before beginning the regular season.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama men’s basketball program.

Saints-Texans preseason game to be nationally broadcast on FOX

The upcoming Saints-Texans preseason game will be nationally broadcast on FOX, following days of joint practices and leading up to the NFL roster cuts deadline:

The New Orleans Saints and Houston Texans aren’t just going to be highlighted with a national broadcast in their upcoming preseason game — they’re going to be the only show in town. The rest of the NFL will complete their exhibition series Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, but New Orleans and Houston aren’t going to play until Sunday.

And FOX Sports will be shining the bright lights on them at the Caesars Superdome. Kickoff is currently scheduled for 7 p.m. CT/8 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 27.

But how often will the starters actually play? In last year’s third and final preseason game, the Saints pulled Jameis Winston and the starters after just 11 snaps. Defensively, mainstays like Cameron Jordan (9 snaps), Demario Davis and Tyrann Mathieu (15) saw similarly light workloads.

It remains to be seen how heavily Houston will play their starters under first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans, but odds are they’ll want to get a good look at rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud. That could be important when the Saints make the return trip to play the Texans on their home turf just a few weeks later in Week 6 of the regular season.

There’s a lot of intrigue surrounding this exhibition game. Beyond it being the last preseason matchup on the NFL’s calendar, it will follow several days of joint practices between the Saints and Texans at their Metairie training facility. This game will also precede the 2023 roster cuts deadline by just two days; this year, the NFL decided to condense the process down from multiple waves of releases to a single day with teams reducing rosters from 90 players to just 53 on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

So this preseason game will be the last opportunity many players on the roster bubble will have to make their case before the Saints get into the tough business of thinning out their roster.

Expect to see Seahawks starters in Seattle’s final preseason game

After sitting out the first two games, coach Pete Carroll said fans can expect to see the Seahawks starters in the final preseason contest.

Teams around the NFL had to make some adjustments this year in light of the change in the preseason format. Now down from four exhibition games to just three, coaches had to decide when to play and when to rest their starters.

For the Seahawks, like many of the clubs, backups saw most of the action throughout the first two matchups. Coach Pete Carroll explained that was the game plan for Seattle going into the summer.

“This format for us was different than we’ve ever done before,” Carroll said after Saturday’s loss to the Broncos. “We’ve done something different, and it hasn’t been a lot of fun and games with the way we’re playing. But, week 3 is a big deal for us. We’ll go back to a lot of the other guys that haven’t played in the first two games to prepare them for game one of the regular season, that’s been the plan all along.”

So expect to see some of quarterback Russell Wilson and the rest of the starters this Saturday night when the Seahawks host the Chargers at Lumen Field.

NFL preseason likely reduced to 3 games as regular season expands

The National Football League is likely to reduce the number of preseason games down to three with the expansion of the regular season to 17.

It’s only a matter of days before the NFL is expected to formally announce the adoption of the 17-game regular-season schedule. The owners are expected to vote during the spring meetings on March 30 and March 31.

So with the increase of one game in the regular season, how will the preseason scheduling be handled?

Many figured the exhibition games in the summer would be reduced from four down to just two with the new expansion. As it turns out, that likely won’t be the case.

As Tom Pelissero explains in the tweet above, the 2020 CBA provides for no more than 20 games total and it appears the owners will be pushing for the maximum, allowing for three preseason games.

The virtual owners’ meetings take place over the next two days so be sure and check back for the latest news on any schedule changes coming in 2021.
