Vikings coach Mike Zimmer expects Anthony Barr, Everson Griffen to practice a little bit today

Good news, Vikings fans.

The Vikings’ retooled defense was overpowered by the Cardinals offense on Sunday. Even worse news: Minnesota has to play Seattle in Week 3, and the Seahawks appear to have a pretty good offense this year.

At least the Vikings have a chance of getting some key players healthy in time for the next game. Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer said he expects LB Anthony Barr and DE Everson Griffen to be practicing a little bit on Wednesday.

Barr suffered a knee injury that has left him out for both games so far. Also, he missed most of 2020 with a torn pec injury that he suffered in Week 2 against the Colts.

Griffen’s injury stems from a car accident. The defensive end swerved to avoid a deer and suffered a concussion last week.

There’s no telling whether either be ready for the Vikings’ Week 3 game as of now. The injury report comes out later today, which should give people a good idea of where they stand for now.

Vikings DE Everson Griffen suffers concussion from car accident

Everson Griffen is ruled out for the Week 2 game vs. the Cardinals after he suffered a concussion in a car accident.

Vikings DE Everson Griffen did not leave the Week 1 game, but he did show up on this week’s injury report with a concussion.

That concussion stemmed from a car accident he was involved in. Griffen tried to swerve his vehicle to miss a deer while driving to the Vikings practice facility, TCO Performance Center, Mike Zimmer told ESPN’s Courtney Cronin and others.

Griffen has been ruled out for the Vikings’ Week 2 game against the Cardinals. In addition to Griffen, Anthony Barr, Harrison Hand and Christian Darrisaw will also be out for the game and Eric Kendricks is questionable, due to injuries suffered in separate circumstances.

According to the Chicago Tribune, a Farmers Insurance study concluded that two thirds of all animal collisions involving vehicles happen in midwestern states.

“It’s human nature to try and avoid an accident,” Jim Taylor, head of claims customer experience for Farmers Insurance, told the Chicago Tribune in an interview. “It’s extremely difficult to avoid an accident by predicting what an animal will do. By braking suddenly or swerving, a driver can create a new hazard by hitting a tree, guard rail or another car.” So the best way to avoid a deer is to stay in the center line of the road.

Are you a Vikings fan who tuned out the offseason? We’ll catch you up

For some fans, it can be hard to keep up with the Vikings in the offseason. Here is a helpful list:

The Vikings 2021 season officially starts on Sept. 12, but there are plenty of things the team has done leading up to this moment.

For some fans, it can be hard to keep up. Maybe you weren’t able to catch the preseason games this year, or maybe you’ve tuned out football to focus on something else in the summer or spring.

If you’ve been reading every single Vikings article you can find — and if you’ve looked up information on Danny Etling or Case Cookus — then this article is likely not for you.

But if not, here is a helpful list:

Vikings re-sign DE Everson Griffen, LS Andrew DePaola

Guess who’s back (again)?

In what was a surprise decision, the Vikings released Everson Griffen as part of the team’s roster cuts to get to 53 players on Tuesday.

However, Minnesota reverted a few players to the IR on Wednesday, which left the door open for Griffen to make yet another return.

The Vikings re-signed Griffen and long snapper Andrew DePaola, the team announced Wednesday.

Those moves were some of many decisions the team made after producing its initial 53-man roster. The Vikings also cut Britton Colquitt and signed players to the practice squad. Minnesota had added 14 players to the practice squad at the time this article was published.

Griffen’s release yesterday was surprising, in part, because he had just re-signed with the team and he had a good preseason game against the Chiefs. So it’s reasonable that the team would bring him back now.

Minnesota is still missing a punter, but the team has its long snapper back. The Vikings also have depth at the returner spots, with Ihmir Smith-Marsette showing promise, and Ameer Abdullah being on the practice squad currently.

Minnesota Vikings vs. Kansas City Chiefs: Everything we know

The Vikings finish the preseason 0-3. Here is everything we know from the team’s loss to the Chiefs.

Cornerback Bashaud Breeland had a tough start to his reunion in Kansas City.

Breeland, after playing for the Chiefs, signed with the Vikings this offseason in free agency. As a corner for Minnesota, he was beaten by Tyreek Hill one-on-one for the Chiefs’ first touchdown of the game at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday.

For the Chiefs, that touchdown was the first of four. Kansas City ended up pulling away from Minnesota to send the Vikings home with their third consecutive preseason loss. Yes, yes, it’s the preseason, but the Vikings still had some weaknesses exposed that might transfer over to the rest of 2021.

Here is everything we know from the game:

Everson Griffen said he’s going to apologize to Kirk Cousins for mean tweets now that he’s back with the Vikings

That could be awkward.

Last season was a year to forget for Everson Griffen, but he’s back with the Minnesota Vikings.

He just needs to clear up some awkwardness with Kirk Cousins.

The four-time Pro Bowler signed with the Vikings on Monday, returning to the team that he spent the first 10 seasons of his career with before signing with the Cowboys (and getting traded to Detroit) last season.

Now, in that one season away from Minnesota, Griffen and the Vikings weren’t on the best of terms. He wasn’t pleased when head coach Mike Zimmer called him a “good” player as opposed to great. He also sounded off about Cousins on Twitter back in January.

Yeah, that could get awkward.

Upon meeting with reporters on Monday, Griffen was asked about the tweets. He said that he had already apologized to Zimmer and GM Rick Spielman. He just needs to catch up with Cousins.

Griffen said:

“I haven’t really talked to him yet, but I’m gonna get around to doing that. You know, apologize to him. I apologized to Coach (Zimmer) and Rick (Spielman) about what I said. I take full ownership in that. I still gotta talk to Kirk and apologize to him about that.”

I can only imagine how fun that conversation will be.

Vikings DE Everson Griffen says he plans to apologize to Kirk Cousins for his tweets

“I take full ownership in that,” Vikings DE Everson Griffen said.

The Vikings reunited with longtime defensive end Everson Griffen this offseason.

But earlier this offseason, Griffen criticized the team’s franchise quarterback, Kirk Cousins, implying that Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer didn’t want Cousins to sign with the team originally.

Griffen met with media recently and addressed the situation:

“I haven’t really talked to him yet, but I’m going to get around to doing that, apologize to him” Griffen said. “I apologized to coach [Zimmer] and Rick [Spielman] about what I said. I take full ownership in that. I’ve still got to talk to Kirk [Cousins] and apologize to him about that.”

Griffen signing with the team is certainly interesting. He’ll be a big boost to the team in the pass rush. Zimmer said that Griffen will be used as a situational player, as opposed to a starting defensive end.

That said, there is a question mark at the edge rusher spot opposite Danielle Hunter. Griffen filling that void would be a big boost. Zimmer said Stephen Weatherly or D.J. Wonnum will start, though.

Vikings expected to sign Everson Griffen: Six things to consider

Minnesota fans, get excited: Everson Griffen is expected to sign with the Vikings. Here are six things to consider.

Everson Griffen voided his contract with the Vikings last offseason.

Minnesota would have likely been forced to release Griffen due to his large deal and the team’s salary cap situation. But some thought Griffen would re-sign on a cheaper deal.

However, the longtime Vikings edge rusher went elsewhere, signing with the Cowboys in free agency. Dallas then traded Griffen to NFC North rival Detroit.

Now, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Griffen is expected to be signed by Minnesota. The defensive end will return to a team where he was a four-time Pro Bowler.

Here are six things to consider with Griffen coming back:

Ex-Lions DE Everson Griffen returns to the Vikings

Griffen finished second on the Lions in sacks in 2020 after being acquired in a trade from the Cowboys

Former Lions pass rusher Everson Griffen is heading back to the Minnesota Vikings. The free agent DE is signing with Detroit’s NFC North rival after working out for the Vikings late last week.

Griffen had a brief tenure with the Lions. In October, Detroit traded a conditional 2021 draft pick to the Dallas Cowboys to acquire Griffen, then 32. The pick became a 6th rounder, and the Cowboys used it (No. 192 overall) on Kentucky defensive tackle Quinton Bohanna.

In seven games with Detroit, Griffen logged 13 total tackles and 3.5 sacks. The sack total wound up being second on the team behind Romeo Okwara’s 10. Griffen spent his first 10 seasons (2010-2019) with the Vikings and made the Pro Bowl in four of his last five years in Minnesota.
