NFL owners unanimously approve Jaguars stadium renovation deal

NFL owners unanimously approved the Jaguars’ plans to renovate EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville on Tuesday at the league’s owners meetings in Atlanta, Ga, per Brent Martineau of ActionNewsJax.

24 votes were required for the proposal to pass.

The Jaguars and the City of Jacksonville agreed to a $1.4 billion deal to fund the renovation in May, with costs split roughly 45% to 55%, respectively. The Jaguars will be held responsible for any stadium cost overruns.

The deal paired with a $300 million contribution for targeted community initiatives, split 50/50 between the team and the city.

Jacksonville’s City Council passed the stadium legislation in June and an amended version of the community benefits agreement in August.

Among the plans for the stadium include installing a canopy to provide shade, rain cover and improved airflow for 100% of observers in outdoor seating; increased air conditioning; doubling the width of the main concourse and creating 360° connectivity on the upper concourse; 16 new escalators and 12 new elevators; 12 new restrooms and renovations and expansions to existing restrooms; and 190 new points of food and beverage sale.

Stadium capacity will be flexible, with 63,000+ projected for Jaguars games and the ability to flex 70,000+ for the annual Florida-Georgia game and other major events.

The Jaguars will take over the day-to-day operations of the stadium, including budgeting, maintenance and hosting non-NFL events, as part of the deal.

The agreement includes a non-relocation agreement and a 30-year, $1.35 million per year stadium lease extension for the Jaguars, which would take effect in 2028.

“Never doubt Jacksonville. That was my message in the summer to Mayor [Donna] Deegan, the Jacksonville City Council and our residents, and I am humbled and grateful that my fellow NFL team owners agree,” Jaguars owner Shad Khan said in a statement after the vote.

“Today’s League approval of our Stadium of the Future plan means we will realize our vision for a reimagined home of the Jaguars in Downtown Jacksonville, scheduled to open in 2028. The venue will be world-class by every definition. It will impressively serve the Jaguars and their fans, attract major sports and entertainment events to our region, and serve as an economic catalyst for decades to come.

”It also means a new and vibrant Downtown Jacksonville that once may have seemed unimaginable will indeed come to life. I send my deepest appreciation to all who believed, and especially to everyone who did the hard work to make this happen. We have much more hard work ahead, but a lot to be proud of today. Celebrate!”

Below is the anticipated timeline for construction at EverBank Stadium.

  • Construction begins: Feb. 2025
  • 2025 season: In Jacksonville with 60K+ stadium capacity
  • 2026 season: In Jacksonville with approximately 43.5K stadium capacity

‘TrEverBank’: Jaguars stadium renamed for home opener

‘TrEverBank’: Jaguars stadium renamed for home opener

Major renovations to EverBank Stadium are slated to begin in February, so long as NFL owners approve the proposal agreed upon by the Jaguars and Jacksonville City Council.

But the Jaguars’ stadium naming rights partner and their star quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, teamed up to make one temporary tweak ahead of Jacksonville’s Sunday home opener against Cleveland.

“EverBank is now TrEverBank,” Lawrence and EverBank revealed on Instagram.

ESPN’s Michael DiRoccco reported Thursday that signage throughout EverBank Stadium will be temporarily modified to include “Tr” for Week 2.

Lawrence in August partnered with EverBank, a Jacksonville-based financial services organization and the Jaguars’ stadium naming rights holder since 2010 (known as TIAA Bank from 2018-22).

The company said in a Thursday release that its website, ATM and financial centers will also temporarily rebrand as “TrEverBank.”

“I don’t like having too much of the spotlight with stuff like that, but I think it was clever,” Lawrence said via DiRocco. “They have the naming rights for the stadium, so it’s a good play on words, and I was fine with it.”

Jacksonville signed Lawrence to the biggest contract in franchise history this offseason in the form of a five-year, $275 million deal, tied with Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow’s largest average annual value ($55 million) in NFL history.

Through 51 starts with the Jaguars since becoming Jacksonville’s No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Lawrence has completed 63.7% of his passes for 11,932 yards with 59 touchdowns and 39 interceptions, adding 972 yards and 11 scores rushing.

The Jaguars (0-1) will host the Browns (0-1) at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Jaguars’ founding owner supports stadium renovation proposal

Jaguars’ founding owner supports stadium renovations proposal

Former Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver on Tuesday expressed his support for proposed renovations to EverBank Stadium, calling the agreement between the team and city of Jacksonville “forward-thinking” and “bold.”

Weaver, 89, led the ownership group that acquired the rights to establish the Jaguars in 1993. He served as the team’s majority owner until 2012, when he sold the franchise to Shad Khan for a reported $760 million.

The club is now worth $4 billion, per Forbes.

It has agreed to split the cost of the proposed renovations with the City of Jacksonville (public expenditure), contributing $625 million to the construction budget each.

The city would tack $150 million onto the project for deferred capital and maintenance/start-up expenses, and the Jaguars would be responsible for stadium cost overruns. Both sides would contribute $150 million for a community benefits package, and the team would sign a new 30-year lease.

“The forward-thinking stadium renovation agreement struck by Mayor Deegan’s office and the Jaguars is just as significant a leap forward for Jacksonville as the day we first landed the NFL franchise, nearly 31 years ago on November 30th, 1993,” Weaver said in a statement.

“I will never forget the excitement of that day. And as former owner of the Jaguars, I wholeheartedly support the entire package now before the City Council. The much-needed renovations to the stadium will keep the team in our city for generations to come, by providing more shade, better food choices, and an upgraded entertainment venue that will now be able to attract premiere events.

“In addition, the corresponding community benefits package is an outstanding investment in our long-term prosperity. This package is vital, because it will fund critical workforce development initiatives, affordable housing and homelessness reduction efforts, and the completion of our riverfront parks. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make real progress for thousands of Duval County residents.

“I commend both Mayor [Donna] Deegan and Shad Khan for having the courage and foresight to make bold investments into our city’s future. It’s a huge step toward helping Jacksonville realize its full potential, and it will not raise taxes even one cent.

“I urge the Jacksonville City Council to approve this agreement for the betterment of us all. Go Jaguars!”

Proposed upgrades to the stadium include canopy shading and rain cover, which would lead to improved airflow within the stadium; increased air conditioning; expanded concourses; new elevators and escalators; new and renovated bathrooms; and new points of food and beverage sale.

Polling of 667 Duval County registered voters by the University of North Florida Public Opinion Research Lab, released last week, found 56% support versus 43% opposition for the agreement in full.

Public funding for only the stadium received 41% approval and 58% disapproval with one percent undecided or having refused to answer. For only the community benefits agreement, public funding received 81% support and 17% opposition.

Report: Jaguars ‘Stadium of the Future’ to include synthetic turf

Report: Jaguars ‘Stadium of the Future’ to include synthetic turf

EverBank Stadium is one of 15 NFL facilities operating with a natural or hybrid grass playing field, according to polling by The Athletic conducted in 2023.

But with the ball rolling toward the venue receiving a $1.4 million facelift by the end of the decade, Jacksonville’s “Stadium of the Future” isn’t expected to remain on the list.

Per the Jacksonville Daily Record, which reviewed a statement from the Stadium of the Future Project Program, the renovated facility’s playing field will consist of sand-infilled synthetic turf over a shock attenuation pad.

“Two FIFA-regulation soccer goals at each end of the pitch will also be accommodated in the field design,” Monty Zickuhr of the Daily Record wrote. One motivating factor for the proposed renovations is to host more non-NFL events such as soccer matches, college football games and concerts.

The Jaguars have played on natural grass in their home facility since making their NFL debut in 1995.

The NFL Players Association in 2023 requested the league mandate natural grass for all playing surfaces after New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon on a turf field in Week 1 of last season.

The association previously released data displaying noncontact injuries as more common on turf than natural grass between 2012-22, although the rates were almost even in 2021.

EverBank, Jaguars agree to extend stadium naming rights

EverBank, Jaguars agree to extend stadium naming-rights

EverBank and the Jaguars have reached a pending agreement on a three-year extension for the team’s stadium naming rights, subject to final approval from the City of Jacksonville, the bank announced in a Wednesday release.

So long as the deal is approved, the Jaguars’ home facility will be called EverBank Stadium through the 2027 season.

“Like every Jaguars fan, all of us at EverBank are thrilled we’ll be able to continue to ‘Lock Down The Bank’ at home games for several years to come under this pending sponsorship agreement extension,” EverBank’s Chief Executive Officer Greg Seibly said in a statement.

“As a Jacksonville-based company with a nationwide focus, our longstanding relationships on and off the field with the Jaguars, the NFL and the City of Jacksonville have enabled us to make a significant impact in the communities where we work and live, and we look forward to carrying on that great tradition.”

EverBank originally secured the Jaguars’ stadium naming rights in 2010 and extended the contract for 10 years in 2014. It first named the venue EverBank Field, before changing to TIAA Bank Field ahead of the 2018 season when EverBank was acquired by TIAA.

EverBank was restored as the site name ahead of the 2023 campaign but as EverBank Stadium, not Field.

“Over the years, EverBank has been synonymous with the home of the Jaguars,” added Mark Lamping, President of the Jacksonville Jaguars. “We are thrilled to continue this relationship through an extended agreement.”

The Jaguars and City of Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan last week revealed their agreement on proposed renovations to EverBank Stadium, which are projected to cost $1.4 billion between the team and the city.

The plans call for the team to temporarily relocate for the 2027 season, the final year of the agreed-upon naming rights extension, for the final year of construction. The new-look facility would be scheduled to open in August 2028.

Jaguars, Jacksonville reveal ‘Stadium of the Future’ agreement details

The Jaguars and office of Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan on Tuesday evening revealed the framework of their agreement regarding renovations to EverBank Stadium, proposing a 55%/45% split between the city and team, respectively, on the project’s total costs.

The City of Jacksonville (public funding) and the Jaguars will each contribute $625 million to the budget for stadium construction, with the city tacking on $150 million for deferred capital and maintenance/start-up expenses. The Jaguars will be responsible for stadium cost overruns.

The total projected cost for renovations is $1.4 billion. It would pair with the Jaguars signing a new, 30-year, $1.35 million per year lease on the stadium, which would take effect in 2028.

Among plans for the project include installing a canopy to provide shade, rain cover and improved airflow for 100% of observers in outdoor seating; increased air conditioning; doubling the width of the main concourse and creating 360° connectivity on the upper concourse; 16 new escalators and 12 new elevators; 12 new restrooms and renovations and expansions to existing restrooms; and 190 new points of food and beverage sale.

The city and Jaguars will combine to invest $300 million — $150 million each, upfront from the city and over time from the team — in ongoing, targeted community initiatives, including OUTEAST neighborhood community development, countywide workforce development, park development and conversion, and affordable housing/homelessness.

The Jaguars will continue to play one game annually in London, England, in line with the team’s custom over the last decade. The NFL can assign additional games as part of its international program, but the club can not volunteer additional home games.

The following timeline for the stadium renovations was included in the agreement:

  • Potential final Jacksonville City Council vote: June 25, 2024
  • NFL owners approval: Oct. 2024
  • Construction begins: Feb. 2025
  • 2025 season: In Jacksonville with 60K+ stadium capacity
  • 2026 season: In Jacksonville with approximately 43.5K stadium capacity
  • 2027 season: Away from Jacksonville
  • Renovations complete and facility opening: Aug. 2028

Jaguars, Jacksonville to announce stadium renovation deal Tuesday

Jaguars, Jacksonville to announce stadium renovation deal Tuesday

Jacksonville City Council president Ron Salem announced Wednesday that the Jaguars and Mayor Donna Deegan have reached an agreement on a deal for renovations to EverBank Stadium.

In a statement, Deegan confirmed that the contract’s framework is in place with the fine print still being written by the city’s negotiating team. The deal is expected to be unveiled at the next City Council meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, May 14.

“The mayor reached out to me late yesterday afternoon to inform me that the executive branch and the Jaguars have reached an agreement on the stadium renovation,” Salem said on Wednesday, per the Florida Times-Union. “I do not know the specifics of this particular deal but look forward to engaging the council during the month of June as we move forward to review it.”

“We have reached an agreement on the framework of a deal,” Deegan added. “The negotiating team is currently putting the final details on paper, and we will release that information as soon as it is available.”

News 4 Jax reported Tuesday that a deal was “imminent.”

The renovation proposal, including shading for every seat; expanded concourses, extra escalators and elevators, and upgraded HVAC, plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems, has previously been projected to cost $1.4 billion, reportedly split unevenly between the Jaguars and the city of Jacksonville.

The Jaguars have also pitched a sports and entertainment district around the Jacksonville Shipyards to accompany renovations, a bill team owner Shad Khan reportedly would primarily handle to even out the total costs of the projects. Construction has begun on a Four Seasons Hotel and Residences on the land.

Independently, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced an additional $75 million in state funding for a University of Florida graduate campus in Jacksonville on Wednesday. While the location is not yet determined, the Jaguars are reportedly willing to pair the campus with the district.

According to the Times-Union, discussions have involved potential locations for the Jaguars to play home games during either the 2026-27 seasons or the 2027 season alone while renovations are conducted. Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville and Camping World Stadium in Orlando are among the venues that have been considered.

Report: Preliminary deal for Jaguars stadium renovations ‘imminent’

Report: Preliminary deal for Jaguars stadium renovations ‘imminent’

A preliminary deal between the Jaguars and the city of Jacksonville regarding renovations to EverBank Stadium is “imminent,” according to Jim Piggott of News 4 Jax.

Piggott’s reporting suggested a deal could be reached and revealed by next week, with the next Jacksonville City Council meeting scheduled for May 14.

“Residents should have some answers to exactly where this is going, what it could cost and who’s paying for what,” Piggott wrote, referencing the upcoming assembly and noting the deal would focus only on the stadium and not developing the surrounding area.

A proposed “Stadium of the Future” has been projected to cost $1.4 billion, with the city handling the majority of the bill. It would include shading for every seat; expanded concourses; extra escalators and elevators; upgraded HVAC; plumbing; mechanical and electrical systems; and other renovations,

Additionally, the team and city have explored a sports and entertainment district in the stadium’s surrounding area, with owner Shad Khan expected to handle most of those expenses, reportedly estimated between $550 million and $668 million.

“What we’ve discussed with the city and what’s contained in this memorandum of understanding is we get to 50-50, but more of [the city of Jacksonville’s] 50% is going to have to go into the stadium because that’s what the league’s going to look at and more of Shad’s 50 is going to have to go into the development around the stadium,” Jaguars president Mark Lamping said in June 2023.

Construction has begun on a Four Seasons Hotel and Residences, pitched by Khan, in the Jacksonville shipyards in front of Jaguars headquarters. The resort’s anticipated opening is in 2026.

HOK, which designed Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., has been selected as the architectural partner for the stadium project.

The Jaguars’ lease with EverBank Stadium is scheduled to expire after the 2029 season. An extension would require approval from 75% of the league’s owners. Renovations would also need to be approved by team owners.
