Wes Carroll recaps Purple Aces’ first Super Regional win

Evansville head coach Wes Carroll recaps the Purple Aces’ first Super Regional win.

Evansville won its first NCAA Tournament Super Regional contest in program history on Saturday.

The Purple Aces defeated No. 1 national seed Tennessee, 10-8, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Evansville head coach Wes Carroll discussed the Purple Aces’ win.

“This team doesn’t surprise me anymore, they just don’t,” Carroll said. “Just an incredible effort after what they’ve been through over the past two weeks. For them to dig deep there in the middle part of that game and perform the way that they did, it’s something that I can’t really put into words. Yesterday, we came to the yard, and it was bright lights. We were tight, the dugout wasn’t really engaged, and I was upset about it. Today, it was the complete opposite, and I felt like we were ourselves. We were the Aces that liked to have fun and are loose coming into the yard.

“In an elimination game, it’s a great feeling to have, it really is whenever you know that your team is ready. I said yesterday that solo home runs don’t hurt you. I didn’t know that they were going to stack three of them back to back to back and kind of throw us on our heels. Donovan Schultz has been throwing really well for us over the past month and a half, but we had to pull him. That’s really leaning heavy on our bullpen and Jakob Meyer coming in, giving us a performance of just a goose egg and another goose egg to give our offense a chance during the fourth, fifth and sixth to do something really unique, and what I feel like we’re capable of and that’s putting up crooked numbers on the scoreboard. These two guys beside me had incredible games, but it was also some really special at-bats that we had through the course of that game, including Chase Hug and Brent Widder, amongst many others. I’m just really proud of our guys. I think it’s hands down the greatest win of our school’s history, a program that I’m extremely proud of. I bleed purple, and it’s great to be able to experience that as the head baseball coach at UE.”

Tony Vitello discusses Vols facing Evansville in game No. 3

Tennessee baseball head coach Tony Vitello discusses the Vols facing Evansville in game No. 3 of the Knoxville Super Regional.

Tennessee opened the Knoxville Super Regional with a series win versus Evansville. The Vols entered Saturday’s contest with an opportunity to clinch a College World Series berth.

Tennessee will now face the Purple Aces on Sunday in a series finale after losing, 10-8, in game No. 2 of a best-of-three series.

Seventh-year Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello met with media and recapped the Vols’ loss to Evansville.

“Obviously, it’s a little different weekend, but we say it in our conference — you’re in a three-round bout, and you’re going to have to take blows and give blows,” Vitello said. “We were fortunate yesterday, but today they delivered a couple more blows than we did.

“Thrilling for the fans who were one away from being in a really good position, but it didn’t happen that way, so we’ll roll into Sunday, which is always an important day. It’ll be one to one, and we’ll get after it.”

Hunter Ensley details Vols’ comeback win to open Knoxville Super Regional

Tennessee center fielder Hunter Ensley details the Vols’ comeback win against Evansville in game No. 1.

Tennessee trailed Evansville, 2-1, entering the bottom of the third inning on Friday in game No. 1 of the Knoxville Super Regional. The Vols and Purple Aces were also tied, 5-5, entering the bottom of the fifth inning before Tennessee clinched an, 11-6, victory.

Tennessee center fielder Hunter Ensley met with media following the contest and discussed the Vols coming from behind to win game No. 1 of a best-of-three series.

“I just think, offensively, our mentality is any given inning we can get you for three, four, five or even more than that,” Ensley said. “Offensively, it is just keeping the foot on the pedal, and if we don’t get it done one inning then we might get it done in the sixth, seventh or eighth. It really doesn’t matter. I just think as good as our lineup is one through nine, we can get you with anybody at any different time.”

Ensley went 3-for-4 against Evansville and hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning. He recorded four RBIs and two runs.

Wes Carroll discusses series-opening game at Tennessee

Evansville baseball head coach Wes Carroll discusses series-opening game at Tennessee.

Evansville (38-25) is facing elimination in the NCAA Tournament Knoxville Super Regional after losing game No. 1 at Tennessee (54-11), 11-6, on Friday.

Evansville head coach Wes Carroll discussed game No. 1 following the Purple Aces’ loss at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

“What a game,” Carroll said. “I think it was a little closer than what the score indicated. You really have to credit that offense. Five two-out RBI knocks, home runs or whatnot, scoring five runs with two outs, and we weren’t very good with two outs. We had some opportunities early that we didn’t capitalize on, but big stage, bright lights.

“I’m really proud of our guys going and competing. I think they got on the field, and Cal (McGinnis) goes up top and captures a lead. You feel a little bit of momentum, and then Kip (Fougerousse) stepping up with a big knock. It was just an overall great effort from our club. A little short, but we’d like one pitch back, obviously, but for us to go out there and represent the University of Evansville, I’m just really proud of our guys. It’s going to be an uphill battle, but we’re going to start with pitch one and inning one tomorrow to get back in this thing.”

Tony Vitello recaps Vols’ game No. 1 win versus Evansville

Tennessee baseball head coach Tony Vitello discusses the Vols’ win against Evansville.

No. 1 national seed Tennessee (54-11) is one win away from advancing to the College World Series. The Vols defeated Evansville (38-25), 11-6, on Friday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Seventh-year Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello discussed the Vols’ win to open a best-of-three series.

“It was a beautiful day at the ballpark with a great crowd and the sun shining,” Vitello said. “Obviously, it was a little windy and that was changing all day long, but what didn’t change was the competitiveness. Exactly what we thought was going to happen, happened. Their at-bats were going to be tough. (Kenton) Deverman was going to give us a tough look. We thought, with the game on the line, they would go to their guy (Shane) Harris and our guys did an outstanding job in a bunch of situations just showing some toughness.

“Good slides around home plate, battling with two strikes, making adjustments, and their guys did too. You have a guy going 100 miles per hour into the wall and plenty of other situations that you could point out that made it probably a fun game to watch and a stressful game to be in the dugout.”
