Notre Dame to host Northwestern on Nov. 15

Will the teams be nice to each other this time?

We still do not have Notre Dame’s complete schedule for the 2023-24 season. However, other teams’ nonconference schedules are starting to come out, and the Irish have been listed on one of them. Northwestern has released its nonconference schedule and, in doing so, revealed that the Wildcats’ first road game will be Nov. 15 against the Irish.

This particular game will be interesting because there should be some lingering feelings from when these teams met in Evanston last year. Late in the first half of a 92-58 Irish victory, a skirmish emerged after [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag] hit two free throws. Three Wildcats left the bench to participate and were ejected for doing so. Two of those players, leading scorer Caileigh Walsh and Jasmine McWilliams, will be on this year’s Wildcats team.

With most of last year’s Irish returning this year, you know they’ll remember this. More importantly, they’ll remember how much they dominated the Wildcats on their home court. Can they hold serve as the home team? We’ll find out.

2022 ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchups announced

Besides the one involving the Irish, which game most interests you?

Few things draw more excitement during the early part of the college basketball season than the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Every team from one power conference matches up against one from the other. Whether the opponent is good or bad, it also is nice for these teams to see how well they do against a similar level of competition. It definitely is one of the major tuneups for when the conference schedule begins.

The 2022 matchups have been announced, and the ACC would like to change its luck. The conference won this series, which began in 1999, in each of its first 10 seasons. Since then, its only wins have come in 2016 and 2017, the latter of which saw it post a series-best 11-3 record. The Big Ten has had the upper hand in each of the past three years, so a changing of the guard is overdue.

Here are the matchups for this year’s edition:

It’s hard to imagine now, but Notre Dame and Northwestern once had a true rivalry, playing every year in two different stretches of time.

It’s hard to imagine now, but Notre Dame and Northwestern once had a true rivalry, playing every year in two different stretches of time. If you’ve ever wanted to experience what it was like for these schools to play each other regularly, now you can. And you can thank Northwestern’s online archives for the opportunity.

If you enter “Notre Dame” in the archive’s search engine, you’ll find highlights of numerous times the Irish played the Wildcats between 1931 and 1971. In this particular baker’s dozen’s worth of games, the teams earned six wins apiece and played to one scoreless tie. The games include a 35-6 win for the third-ranked Wildcats in 1962 and a 50-7 victory for the second-ranked Irish in 1971. You’ll also see Ara Parseghian coaching both teams.

With only 114 miles separating the teams’ stadiums, it’s a shame that this rivalry mostly has been dormant for a quarter century. Even during a normal season, it would be difficult to rekindle with Notre Dame’s ACC obligations and annual rivalry games with Navy, USC and Stanford. You have to leave some flexibility for different opponents every year, especially if you remain independent. Still, it’s nice to take a look back at what once was between the schools from South Bend and Evanston.
